High Gain Metamaterial Patch Antenna for 2.4GHz Band using New Metamaterial Single-Layer (새로운 메타물질 Single-Layer를 이용한 2.4GHz 대역을 위한 고 이득 메타물질 패치 안테나)

  • In this paper, a high gain patch antenna using a single layer metamaterial superstrate with a near-to-zero refractive index (n) is proposed. Simulations for an ordinary patch antenna and our proposed metamaterial patch antenna were conducted. Our proposed metamaterial patch antenna was implemented and measured. The gain of our proposed metamaterial patch antenna is 6.77dB higher than that of an ordinary patch antenna.

  • In this paper, the single patch microstrip antenna and gap coupled broadband microstrip patch antenna using FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain method) are analyzed. Mur's 2nd absorbing boundary condition to minimize reflected wave is applied. Return loss, voltage standing wave ratio, and input impedance by the length and width of driving patch, the length and width of parasitic patch, and the distance between driving patch and parasitic patch have been analyzed. Design parameters and radiation patterns of broadband antenna have been also shown.

  • The radiation characteristics of an E-plane linear array antenna composed of inductive loaded patch antennas (ILPAs) are investigated. The radiation characteristics of an ILP array antenna are significantly improved compared to those of a conventional array antenna because the mutual coupling of an ILP array antenna is very small. The patch length of a $5{\times}2$ ILPA for the enhancement of the radiation characteristics of a 5-element E-plane linear array antenna composed of ILPAs is presented.

  • Our new metamaterial structure patch antenna improves the gain of ordinary metamaterial patch antenna. The structure of new metamaterial cover is made by removing central $7{\times}7$ lattices out of $9{\times}9$ lattices. Also, the metamaterial covers can be easily fabricated using ordinary substrates. Measurement results of a patch antenna, a metamaterial patch antenna and our proposed metamaterial patch antenna show that the gain of the proposed metamaterial patch antenna is about 3dB higher than that of the ordinary metamaterial patch antenna.

  • The patch antennas with an array of pins with excellent radiation characteristics are investigated for several substrate thicknesses. The patch length of a pin array patch antenna for the maximum suppression of radiation in the horizontal plane decreases as the substrate thickness increases. The radiation in the horizontal plane of a pin array patch antenna is very small compared to that of a conventional patch antenna. The increase of forward radiation and the decrease of backward radiation of a pin array patch are obtained compared to those of a conventional patch antenna. The half-power beamwidth of E-plane radiation pattern of a pin array patch antenna is narrow compared to that of a conventional patch antenna so that the directivity is improved.

  • In this paper, a microstrip patch antenna with the T-shaped slits is designed and fabricated for GPS. The resonant frequency of the microstrip patch antenna with the slits is lower than that of a microstrip patch antenna without the slits so it can be reduced the size of patch. In order to calculate resonant frequency of the microstrip patch antenna with the slits, the resonant frequency formulas are derived from the surface current distribution on microstrip patch antenna. Using the Ensemble 6.0 simulation tool, the accuracy of approximate equations is verified. The microstrip patch antenna with the slits is designed by using these equations. The size of the designed antenna with T-shaped slits can be reduced to 29% compared with that without the slits. The microstrip patch antenna with slits have a very narrow bandwidth. In order to improve the narrow bandwidth of microstrip patch antennas with the slits, a microstrip patch antenna with rectangular slot is proposed. As the result of the measurements, the resonant frequency of the proposed microstrip patch antenna with the T-shaped slits is 1.575GHz and the bandwidth is about 50MHz.

The study for characteristics of a concaved microstrip antenna (오목형 마이크로스트립 안테나의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • 기존의 직사각형 마이크로스트립 평면구조 패치 안테나를 변형하여 패치상에 오목한 구조를 갖는 새로운 3차원 패치구조의 마이크로스트립 안테나를 제안하고, 그 공진주파수와 대역폭 변화 특성을 연구하였다. 오목형 구조의 크기에 따라 공진 주파수와 대역폭이 증가하는 것으로 관찰되었으며, 복사특성은 기존의 마이크로스트립 안테나와 거의 유사한 특성을 나타내었다. 새로운 3차원 구조를 갖는 패치에 대한 해석 및 설계는 FDTD 방법을 사용하였으며, 이에 대한 검증을 위해 기존의 마이크로스트립 안테나와 제안된 오목형 구조의 안테나를 제작하여 측정한 결과 공진주파수 및 대역폭 특성 변화가 해석결과와 잘 일치함을 확인할 수 있었다.

10.525 GHz Band Broadband Inset-fed Microstrip Patch Antenna (10.525 GHz 대역 광대역 인셋-급전 마이크로스트립 패치 안테나)

  • In this paper, a broadband inset-fed microstrip patch antenna operating at 10.525 GHz band was proposed. The proposed broadband inset-fed microstrip patch antenna consists of three narrow rectangular patches. At the center of the center patch, two symmetrical side patches were connected by a strip conductor and were arranged with their centers shifted in a perpendicular direction with respect to the center patch. For performance comparison, a conventional inset-fed square microstrip patch antenna was designed. Experiment results show that the frequency band of the measured input reflection coefficient with a voltage standing wave ratio less than 2 for the broadband inset-fed microstrip patch antenna was 10.036-11.051 GHz (9.63%), whereas that for the conventional inset-fed rectangular microstrip patch antenna was 10.306-10.772 GHz (4.42%). Therefore, the input reflection coefficient frequency bandwidth of the fabricated broadband inset-fed microstrip patch antenna was increased by 2.18 times, compared to the conventional inset-fed square microstrip patch antenna.

Wideband Stacked Microstrip Antenna with Rectangular and Triangular Parasitic Patches for 860MHz Band (직사각형 및 삼각형 기생패치를 이용한 860MHz 대역 광대역 적층 마이크로스트립 안테나)

  • A wideband stacked patch antenna with parasitic elements, rectangular and triangle shaped patches, is proposed. Two different shaped parasitic elements are placed in the above of main rectangular microstrip patch antenna in order to achieve wide bandwidth for 860 MHz band. Coupling between the main patch and parasitic patches is realized by thick air gap. The gap and locations of parasitic patches are found to be the main factor of the wideband impedance matching. The proposed antenna is designed and fabricated on a ground plane with small size of $119mm{\times}109mm$ for application of compact transceivers. The fabricated antenna on an FR4 substrate shows that the minimum measured return loss is below -11.68dB at 824 MHz and an impedance band of 818~919 MHz(11.7%) at 10dB return loss level. The measured radiation patterns are similar to those of a conventional patch antenna with maximum gain of 2.11 dBi at 824 MHz.

Broadband Improvement of The Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antennas (구형 마이크로스트립 패치 안테나 대역폭 개선)

  • 마이크로스트립 패치안테나의 대역을 증가시키는 방법이 꾸준히 연구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 구형 패치 구조에 기생 소자를 더한 형태로 구형 패치 외부에 바(bar)와 밴드(band) 모양의 기생소자를 설치하여 프린징 효과를 최소화 하고자 하였으며, 이로 인한 안테나 효율의 향상과 대역폭을 증가를 시키고자 하였으며, 또한 기생소자의 폭과 방사안테나의 간격을 조절하여 대역폭과 임피던스정합 특성의 변화를 해석하였다. 이를 이용하여 LMDS통신 주파수 대역인 24.6GHz∼28.5GHz에서 공진 대역을 갖도록 설계하였다. 정재파비 2.0 이하를 기준으로 기존의 패치안테나의 중심주파수에 대한 대역 이용율이 수 %인데 반하여, 본 연구에서 제시한 밴드를 설치한 구조의 경우 12.92%로 증가함을 알 수 있고, 또한 본 연구에서 제시한 외부 밴드를 갖는 구조가 급전선로와 패치 안테나와의 정합특성이 월등함을 확인하였다.
