Impact of Panel Attrition and Conditioning : The Case of KBS-MBMR's 2007 Korean Presidential Election Panel Survey (패널 이탈과 조건화의 영향: KBS-MBMR의 2007년 대통령 선거 패널조사 사례)

  • Even though panel surveys are very useful in estimating the change between time points, they suffer from sample distortion as survey rounds proceed due to panel attrition and conditioning. This study is to report the statistical aspects of KBS-MBMR's five-rounds panel survey for the 2007 Presidential Election of Korea. Main findings are as follows. First, the attrition propensities were higher among women, among the young and the old aged, and among "None"/"Don't Know"/"Won't Say"(DK) respondents for the question asking preferred candidate. Second, there existed the conditioning effect that pushes the respondents to choose one candidate in hurry. Third. repeated measurements of the survey did not influence panel respondents on the choice of preferred candidate. if DK respondents are set. aside, and on the final voting intention of panel respondents.

Synthesis of Zeolite from Waste LCD Panel Glass (폐 LCD 패널유리를 이용한 제올라이트의 합성)

  • To find a recycling method for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel glasses, we investigated the synthesis process of zeolite with an ion exchange ability by hydrothermal reaction using waste LCD panel glass as a raw material. It was shown that the waste LCD panel glass can be used as a raw material for the production of zeolites having the ion exchange ability. Following conditions for the synthesis of the zeolite with an ion exchange ability were required : the molar ratio of Si to Al components of the waste LCD glass needs to be 2.0 to 2.8, and the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 12 hours are needed for the hydrothermal reaction. Based on the required conditions previously mentioned, the A type zeolite was synthesized when the molar ratio of the Si to Al component was 2.0, and the P type zeolite was produced when the molar ratio was 2.8. The type A zeolite synthesized by using the waste LCD panel glass showed a good ion exchange ability and heavy metal adsorption ability. Also, an excellent ion exchange capacity was observed as the crystal phase grows stably in a cubic phase.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of weight reduction by changing the partition panel of vehicle from an existing aluminum material to carbon fiber reinforced plastics. Three weaving methods (plain, twill and satin) were used in the manufacture of composite materials, and they were produced and tested to derive their material properties. The analysis model of composite partition panel for torsional conditions was developed and the structural stability and system stiffness were evaluated according to Tsai-Hill failure criteria. With design variables for fiber orientation angles and stacking sequence, evolutional optimal algorithm was performed and as the results, the optimal composite partition panel was designed. In addition, the structural analysis results for strength and specific stiffness were compared with aluminum partition panels and composite partition panels to verify the possibility of weight reduction.

  • The main objective of this study is to develop an discrete optimization algorithm of plane steel frames with rigid using second-order-elastic-plastic hinge analysis which is considering panel zone. Conventional analyses of steel frame are usually tarried out without considering the effect of panel zone deformation on frame behavior The validity of this model is established by comparison without panel zone on joint models is analyzed numerically to demonstrate the importance of using realistic models in steel frame analysis. The objective function is taken as Weight of steel frames and the constraints we formulated based on AISC-LRFD(1994). The validity of the developed algorithm we demonstrate by comparing the result with those of SAP2000. The result of the study indicates that the optimal design algorithm considering of panel zone behavior more economic design than simple steel frame design methods.

  • High-speed vehicles are subjected to complex loads, such as acoustic pressure from the engine at launch and aerodynamic heating and aerodynamic pressure during flight. A thermal protection system panel is required to protect internal systems such as the fuel tank of the vehicle from the external environment. This study defines analytical models for heat transfer and thermal structure characteristics of the thermal protection system panel. Furthermore, the study performed parameters analysis to achieve the thermal structural integrity and to make it lighter.

Prediction of Steady Performance of a Propeller by Using a Potential-Based Panel Method (포텐셜을 기저로한 패널법에 의한 프로펠러의 정상 성능 해석)

  • This paper describes a potential-based panel method for the prediction of steday performance of a marine propeller operating in a uniform oncoming flow. An integral equation with unknown dipole strengths is formulated by distributing the normal dipoles and/or sources on the blade and hub surfaces and the wake sheet, and is solved numerically upon discretization. A hyperboloidal panel has been adopted to compute the potential induced by a normal dipole on a non-planar quadrilateral panel. The Kutta condition is satisfied by iteratively annulling the pressure jumps at the trailing edge. Extensive convergence tests are carried out, and the influence of the wake model upon performance is studied. Predicted performance is shown to correlate well with the experiments.

  • In this paper, the equivalent elastic properties of fiber reinforced plastic laminar are investigated using various homogenization schemes. Although there are several methods for predicting the equivalent elastic properties such as analytical formula or semi-empirical formula, most of them have some limitations or are not much accurate when handling new composite material consisting of various fiber, matrix and fiber-volume fraction ratio. To resolve the issues, computational homogenization scheme is adopted with a representative volume element (RVE) comprised of a set of finite elements. Finally, the equivalent elastic properties are obtained by applying periodic boundary conditions. The obtained results are compared with those by the existing methods and test results. Also its effect on structural analysis results of the composite satellite panel is investigated.

  • 최근 입력소자로 활용되는 터치스크린은 키보드나 마우스와 같은 입력장치를 사용하지 않고, 스크린에 손가락, 펜 등을 접촉하여 입력하는 방식이다. 터치패널의 구현방식에 따라 저항막(Resistive) 방식, 정전용량(Capacitive) 방식, SAW (Surface Accoustic Wave; 초음파) 방식, IR (Infrared; 적외선) 방식등으로 구분된다. 특히 최근 관심을 받고 있는 IR 방식은 적외선이 사람의 눈에는 보이지 않으나, 직진성을 가지고 있어 장애물이 있으면 차단되는 특성을 이용한 방식이다. IR방식의 터치패널은 발광(Light emitting)소자와 수광(Light detecting)소자가 마주하도록 배치되어 터치에 의해 차단된 좌표를 인식하게 되며, ITO 필름 등이 필요 없어 Glass 1장으로도 구현이 가능하며 투과율이 우수하다. 이러한 IR 방식의 터치패널을 제작하기 위하여 사용된 IR 광검출기는 광학적 band-gap이 작은 박막물질을 필요로 한다. 본 연구에서는 IR 광검출을 위한 물질로 SiGe를 co-sputtering 기법을 이용하여 성장시켰다. 일반적으로 SiGe 박막을 성장시키기 위하여 저압화학기상증착법(low pressure chemical vapor deposition, LPCVD)이나 고진공 LPCVD를 사용하지만 본 연구에서는 CVD에 비하여 무독성이면서 환경친화적이고 초기투자비용이 낮은 증착장비인 sputtering을 이용하였다. 본 연구에서 성장된 SiGe 박막은 400$^{\circ}C$에서 rf plasma가 인가된 Ge과 dc plasma가 인가된 Si의 power를 조절하여 결정화도가 70% (Fig. 1)이고 결정성장방향이 (111)과 (220)방향으로 성장하는 SiGe 박막을 얻을 수 있었다. 본 논문에서는 co-sputtering 성장조건에 따라 성장된 SiGe의 박막 특성을 논의할 것이다.

Approximation of Distributed Aerodynamic Force to a Few Concentrated Forces for Studying Supersonic Panel Flutter (초고속 패널 플러터 연구를 위한 분포 공기력의 집중하중 근사화)

  • The present study considers the usage of concentrated forces to simulate real panel flutter. The concept of using concentrated forces have been validated for studying the flutter of wing structure in subsonic flow, yet its application in the supersonic region remained to be explored. Hence, a simply supported panel subjected to forces, equivalent to aerodynamic force is considered for studying supersonic panel flutter. The distributed aerodynamic forces are approximated to few concentrated forces by taking numerical integration. The aeroelastic equation is formulated using the classical small-deflection theory and the piston theory for linear panel flutter whereas for emulated panel flutter the flutter equation is derived by replacing the pressure due to aerodynamic loading with pressure from concentrated loading. Finally, flutter frequency, flutter dynamic pressure, and corresponding mode shape are found for emulated panel flutter and compared with linear panel flutter. Two important parameters, the number of concentrated forces and their location are discussed through numerical examples and optimization process respectively. So far, the flutter results acquired in this study are reasonable to suggest the feasibility of reproducing panel flutter using concentrated forces.

Prediction of Performance of Waterjet Propulsors by Surface Panel Method (패널법에 의한 물 분사 추진장치의 성능해석)

  • This paper describes a potential-based panel method formulated for the prediction of the steady performance of a waterjet propulsor. The method employs normal dipoles and sources distributed on the solid surfaces such as the impeller/stator blades, hub and duct, and normal dipoles in the shed wakes trailing the impeller and stator to represent the potential flow around the waterjet propulsor. To define a closed boundary surface, the inlet and outlet open boundary surfaces are introduced where the sources and dipoles are distributed. The kinematic boundary condition on the solid boundary surface is satisfied by requiring that the normal component of the total velocity should vanish. On the inlet surface, the total inflow flux into the duct is specified, and on the outlet surface the conservation of mass principle is applied to evaluate the source strength. The solid surfaces are discretized into a set of quadrilateral panel elements and the strengths of sources and dipoles are assumed constant at each panel. Applying this approximation to the boundary conditions leads to a set of simultaneous equations. Systematic numerical tests show that the present numerical method is fast and stable. In order to validate the present method, sample computations are carried out first for the case of a conventional axial flow fan which has a similar geometry as the waterjet propulsor, and then for the case of a waterjet propulsor on which experiments are carried out at KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering).
