An approach using complex potentials is presented for analysis of composite plate with an elliptical hole or a rectilinear crack. Composite structure is susceptible to encounter impact damages, which lead to considerable decrease in its residual strength. Such impact damages could be modeled as an equivalent elliptical hole or notch-like crack. Even though finite element method is widely used to analyze stresses or fracture mechanics parameters around such damage, it is tedious to make successive FE-modeling for damage tolerance assessment under fatigue loadings. In this point of view, the solutions based on complex potentials are very simple and easy to use. The computed results are also compared and discussed with those from FEA.

In this paper, a simple improved 8-node finite element for the finite element analysis of fibrous composite plates is presented by using the direct modification. We drive explicit expressions of shape functions for the 8-node element with bilinear element geometry, which is modified so that it can represent any quadratic fields in Cartesian coordinates. The refined first-order shear deformation theory is proposed, which results in parabolic through-thickness distribution of the transverse shear strains and stresses from the formulation based on the third-order shear deformation theory. It eliminates the need for shear correction factors in the first-order theory. This finite element is further improved by combined use of assumed strain, modified shape function, and refined first-order theory. To show the effectiveness of our simple modification on the 8-node finite elements, numerical studies are carried out the static, buckling and free vibration analysis of fibrous composite plates.

Ship have cutout inner bottom and girder and floor etc. Ship's structure is used much, and structure strength must be situated, but establish new concept when high stress interacts sometimes fatally the area. There is no big problem usually by aim of weight reduction, a person and change of freight, piping etc. Because cutout's existence grow up in this place, and, elastic buckling strength by load causes large effect in ultimate strength. Therefore, stiffened perforated plate considering buckling strength and ultimate strength is one of important design criteria which must examine when decide structural concept at initial design. Therefore, and, reasonable buckling strength about perforated stiffened plate need to ultimate strength limited design . Calculated ultimate strength varied several web height and cutout's dimension, and thickness in this investigated data. Used program(ANSYS) applied F.E.A code based on finite element method.

Laminated composite plates have shown their superiority over metals in applications requiring high specific strength, high specific modulus, and so on. Therefore, they have used in various industry. However, they have poor resistance to impact compared to typical metal materials. To resolve this problem by many researchers for a variety of studies have been attempted. This study investigates characteristic of impact behavior of laminated composite plates due to initial stress. Using finite element program which involved the indentation law, we investigate characteristic of impact behavior of laminated composite plates due to initial stress.

In AASHTO LRFD (2007), a compact section is defined as a section in which no premature failure caused by local buckling of web and flange plate or later buckling occurs before the section reaches the plastic moment, Mp. The current AASHTO LRFD (2007) provides the compact section requirement by limiting the web slenderness only for webs without longitudinal stiffeners. The role of longitudinal stiffener is to increase the web buckling strength caused flexure. Although a web does not satisfy the compactness requirement without longitudinal stiffeners, the web buckling can be prevented by use of valid longitudinal stiffeners. Therefore, the web may be able to reach the plastic moment. However, the reason why a longitudinal stiffener may not be used to satisfy compactness requirement is not cleary explained in AASHTO LRFD (2007). In this study, the buckling and ultimate strength behaviors of stiffened webs subjected to bending are investigated through the linear buckling and nonlinear finite element analysis. It is found that steel plate girders having webs that do not satisfy the compactness requirement are able to reach the plastic moment if the longitudinal stiffeners have sufficient rigidities and are properly located. From a nonlinear regression analysis of the results, a new compactness requirement is suggested for webs stiffened with one longitudinal stiffener.
Concrete shear wall with opening is modeled as a rectangular thin plate. The stability analysis results are presented by the buckling coefficient, k, for two different boundary conditions. The other parameters whose variation have been considered are the ratio of the bending induced force to gravity force, a, the ratio of the horizontal shear force to the gravity force ratio, A and the change of location and the size of perforated part. To obtain the results by finite element method, an example plate has been divided into 27*9 square elements. Four node rectangular c.deg. continuous finite elements having three degrees of freedom per each node is adopted. It is generally concluded that the buckling coefficients decrease as the size of hole increases, and the location of hole moves to free edge of the wall.

In this study, we performed the biomechanical analysis of cervical plate systems by using a computer simulation based on finite element method to derive reliable model by analysis of design variables and fatigue behavior. To simulate the cervical spine movement in-vivo state by surgery, we modeled the cervical plate system which consisted of screws, rings, rivets, and plate and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Block. The experiment of cervical plate system followed the ASTM F1717 standards that covered the materials and methods for the static and fatigue testing. The result of computer simulation is compared with experimented test. We expected this study is to derive reliable results by analysis of design variables and fatigue behavior for developing a new model.
Blanking is one of the most frequently used processes in sheet metal forming. In this paper, attention is paid to the blanking simulation of aluminium foil with $20{\mu}m$ thickness which is used an anode in lithium-ion polymer battery. In order to study the shearing mechanism for the metallic foil, finite element analysis with Crockroft and Latham fracture criterion was performed. The objective of the present work is to evolve a methodology to obtain the optimum punch-die clearance for a given aluminium foil by the simulation of the blanking process using a general purpose FEM code.
Previous finite element studies have shown that AASHTO Standard load distribution factor (LDF) equations appear to be conservative for longer spans and larger girder spacing, but too permissible for short spans and girder spacing. AASHTO LRFD specification defines the distribution factor equation for girder spacing, span length, slab thickness, and longitudinal stiffness. However, this equation requires an iterative procedure to correctly determine the LDF value due to an initially unknown longitudinal stiffness parameter. This study presents a simplified LDF equation for interior and exterior girders of two-span continuous I-girder bridges that does not require an iterative design procedure. The finite element method was used to investigate the effect of girder spacing, span length, slab thickness, slab width, and spacing and size of bracing. The computer program, GTSTRUDL, was used to idealize the bridge superstructures as the eccentric beam model, the concrete slab by quadrilateral shell elements, steel girders by space frame members, and the composite action between these elements by rigid links. The distribution factors obtained from these analyses were compared with those from the AASHTO Standard and LRFD methods. It was observed through the parametric studies that girder spacing, span length, and slab thickness were the dominant parameters compared with others. The LRFD distribution factor for the interior girder was found to be conservative in most cases, whereas the factor for the exterior girder to be unconservative in longer spans. Furthermore, a regression analysis was performed to develop simplified LDF formulas. The formulas developed in this study produced LDF values that are always conservative to those from the finite element method and are generally smaller than the LDF values obtained from the AASHTO LRFD specification. The proposed simplified equation will assist bridge engineers in predicting the actual LDF in two-span continuous I-girder bridges.
