Vertical loads acting on corrugated metal culverts under negative arching condition were investigated through numerical analyses. Four kinds of corrugated metal culverts with span of 3m were considered in numerical analyses. Also, depths of cover were varied from 1m to 6m with increment of 1m. According to numerical analyses, magnitudes of vertical loads acting on culverts under the condition of negative arching were similar as overburden load on culvert. Furthermore, magnitudes of vertical loads acting on culverts supported by pile foundation were similar as those without pile foundation when depths of cover were less than about 2m. For larger depths of cover which are greater than about two times of span of culvert, magnitudes of vertical loads were slightly larger than those without pile foundation and its tendency becomes more clear as flexural rigidity of corrugated metal increases.
This paper deals with the characteristics of deformation of the underground corrugated steel plate culverts constructed in the areas where the minimum depth of within 1.5 m soil cover is not secured in the bottom of highways. The underground corrugated steel plate culverts at shallow depth are often designed and constructed with the consideration of the minimum depth of soil cover according to the design standards, which was made in order to minimize any deformation. Additionally, if under unfavorable conditions, slabs are set up for stress relaxation to disperse and minimize the weight of loads transferred to the corrugated steel plate culverts. Nevertheless, if the underground corrugated steel plate culverts are built in areas where the minimum depth of soil cover inevitably cannot be secured, there may occur some deformation. In this paper, a research was carried out to identify the characteristics of deformation in areas where the minimum depth of soil cover is not secured. The result shows that there existed the deterioration of pavement and in its smoothness around the corners of slabs for stress relaxation. To this end, this paper studied the structural stability of the underground corrugated steel plate culverts established in the areas with no minimum depth of soil cover secured, with the consideration of causes and solutions of pavement deterioration.
This paper proposes the force equations(thrust, moment) of corrugated steel culverts through the finite element method. The conditions for maximum thrust and maximum moment are determined from the analysis of soil-structure interaction during the three construction stages, such as backfill to the crown, backfill to the soil cover, and live loads. The proposed form of thrust and moment equations are deduced from the analysis of behaviour and the application of Castigliano's second theorem for the semi-arch structure. Finally, the coefficients used in the proposed equations are determined from a large number of analysis for the various geometries and the soil-structure relative stiffness under the conditions of maximum thrust and maximum moment.

The structures that use the bridge plates are considered to have advantages such as short work term, excellent economical efficiency and low maintenance cost. Bridge plates are being widely used for water ducts and eco-corridors as replacements of reinforced concrete ducts. Bridge plates are deep and have greater pitch as compare to conventionally deep corrugated steel plate. They are expected to be increasingly used in the future. The structures that use bridge plates have two forms, such as arch type and box type. The arch type structures are designed based on the compressive strength, and the box type structures, based on the moment in the plate member. In this study, the ultimate strength and moment strength of the connection part of the specimens were examined by their thickness. Static and bending tests used to evaluate the performance of bridge plate. Finally, These results were used in the design process.
A series of centrifugal model test was conducted to investigate the distribution of vertical earth pressure on circular ductile underground corrugated steel plate waterway culvert with considering the compaction degree of the backfill in the high landfilled embankment section. The compaction degree of backfill was varied to 80, 85, 90, and 95% at the 53g-level gravity considering the similarity of the site. As a result of this test, the load reduction factor by the arching effect of the top of corrugated steel plate showing ductile behavior nearly agreed with the load reduction factor according to the compaction degree of backfill specified in the AISI(2002) design method. The vertical earth pressure measured at the top of the corrugated steel plate was linearly decreased as the compaction degree increased. The greater the compaction degree of backfill was, the greater the reduction of surface loading on the top of the corrugated steel plate by arching effect. The load decreased by arching effect on top of the corrugated steel plate was transferred to the side backfill of the corrugated steel plate(EP 1) and the outside of backfill(EP 3).

The corrugated web is a plate that was manufactured with a corrugated shape. It is widely used in bridges, buildings, and culverts. A girder with a corrugated web can be crippled by local, in-plane compressive loads. Due to its high out-of-plane strength, however, a stiffener is usually not needed in trapezoidally corrugated plates, and the corrugated profile of the web can change the boundary condition of the edge load. Some researchers have studied the strength of the partial-edge loading of the trapezoidally corrugated web, but they have not considered the profile of corrugation in their studies. This paper investigates the influence of the corrugate profile. A parametric study was conducted on the shape parameter using the finite-element method. In this parametric study, the relationship between the corrugated shape and the partial-edge strength was also investigated by dividing the partial-edge strength into the web capacity and the flange capacity.
The Corrugated steel plate structure(CPS) can be applied to construction sites with various purposes, and the merits of CPS such as economical efficiency and swiftness can be utilized when it is constructed properly in consideration of its characteristics. However, in Korea, since the history of corrugated steel plate culvert is relatively short, there are not enough design standards. This research is prepared for finding out the causes through examining and analyzing the problems based on the examples from the existing constructions. Moreover, this study can be utilized in preparing designs and design standards of corrugated steel plate culvert in the future and devising prevention measures and complementary measures by studying construction methods considering features of construction sites and circumstances, several points to be considered while carrying out construction works and prevention measures of a problem with the existing structures.

Zinc galvanized steel plates(sections) of annular corrugations have been used in buried steel culverts. These structures are referred to by a variety of names such as flexible pipes, buried pipes, soil-steel bridges, corrugated steel culverts, and etc. Buried corrugated steel structures show flexible behaviour under the soil load. compared with concrete box structures. Finite element analysis was performed to suggest the reasonable connecting method between the flexible steel culverts and the rigid concrete box. It was predicted that perfectly constrained connections could induce the excessive stress in steel plates. Therefore elastic bearing connections that allow vertical displacement at the connecting point were applied.
