In this study, we analysis an optical receivers using the optical preamplifier in a spectrum-sliced WDM systems. The average numbers of photons/bit, for an $10^{-9}$ error probability, counts using the OOK and FSK transmission. As a result, the theoretical sensitivity for PIN receiver and optical preamplifier receiver are approximately $9.2\times10^4\;and\;7.2\times10^2$ in the m=20, respectively. Also, the average numbers of photons/bit, for and given error probability, theoretical receiver sensitivity for Gaussian method and k-square method are approximately $9\times10^2\;and\;2.16\times10^2$ in the m=40, respectively. And the average numbers of photons/bit, for an given error probability, theoretical receiver sensitivity, OOK and FSK transmission are approximately $1.9\times10^2\;and\;3.1\times10^2$ in the m=20, respectively.
Using one of the absorption lines of $^{13}C_2H_2$ molecules near the zero dispersion wavelength(1549.49nm) of dispersion shifted fiber, we stabilized center frequency of an optical fiber Fabry-Perot filter. The free spectral range of the filter is 100 GHz for 100 GHz channel allocation. For equi-spaced three channel multiplexing, channel locking of three DFB-LDs to transmission peaks of the fiber Fabry-Perot filter was tried. To investigate the effect of dithering current applied to each DFB-LD, the change of DFB-LD linewidth was measured.
In arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) devices whose waveguides were composed of polymer with negative thermo-optic coefficient as overcladding, and silica with positive thermo-optic coefficient as both core and undercladding, we investigated the temperature dependence of the central wavelength using two-dimensional SFDM. From these results, it was confirmed that the temperature dependence can be nearly eliminated by adjusting the refractive index of the cladding and the thickness of the silica thin film upper-loaded on the core. Based on the numerical calculations, the AWG device with polymer overcladding was fabricated. and its optical characteristics were compared with those of the orginal silica AWG device. The introduction of polymer overcladding decreased the temperature dependence of the central wavelength from 0.0130 nm/$^{\circ}C$ to 0.0028 nm/$^{\circ}C$ without deteriorating the insertion loss and crosstalk characteristics.

The structure of a high-power gain-flattened long wavelength band (L-band) optical amplifier was optimized, which was implemented for 64-channel wavelength division multiplexed optical signals with a channel spacing of 50 GHz. The output characteristics of this L-band amplifier were measured and analyzed. The amplifier of the optimized two-stage amplification configuration had a flattened gain of 20 dB within 1 dB deviation between 1570 and 1600 nm for -2 dBm input power condition. The noise figure under this condition was minimized to within 6 dB in the amplification bandwidth. The gain flattening was realized by considering only the characteristics of gain medium in the amplifier without using additional optical or electrical devices. The proposed amplifier consisted of two stages of amplification stages, each of which was based on the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) structure. The erbium-doped fiber length and pumping structures in each stage of the amplifier were optimized through experiments.

A passband-flattening technique based on Fourier optics concept for phased-array wavelength router is presented. For easy control of optical power in each waveguide without phase correction, misaligned array waveguides are used. BPM simulation results indicate that flat passband is as wide as 75 % of the channel spacing with the insertion loss penalty of about 6 dB and with the crosstalk of about -28 dB.

Post-dispersion compensation methods for the 3000 km long-haul transmission distance using 10 Gbps 40 wavelength division multiplexing channels were analyzed and compared. First, each channel was compensated by an individual dispersion value, next each group of eight channels by an individual value, and lastly all forty channels by a single value. Considering the lower and highest performance channels and their values, the post-dispersion compensation method by each channel group showed the possibility to simplify the transmission system without sacrifice of signal performance.

For large capacity optical CDMA networks, we propose a shared-type encoder/decoders based on an tunable wavelength converter(TWC) and an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) router. The proposed encoder/decoder treats codewords of wavelength/time 2-D code simultaneously using the dynamic code allocation property of the TWC and the cyclic property of the AWG router, and multiple subscribers can share the encoder/decoder in networks. Feasibility of the structure of the proposed encoder/decoder for dynamic code allocation is tested through simulations using two wavelength/time 2-D codes, which are the generalized multi-wavelength prime code(GMWPC) and the generalized multi-wavelength Reed-Solomon code(GMWRSC). Test results show that the proposed encoder/decoder can increase the channel efficiency not only by increasing the number of simultaneous users without any multiple-access interference but by using a relatively short length CDMA codes.

I propose the 5Gbps/1.25Gbps WDM/TDM hybrid Passive Optical Network(PON) with inverse RZ(Return to Zero) code coded downstream and NRZ(Non Return to Zero) upstream re-modulation and analyze its performance by performing simulation with MATLAB. The results have shown that an optical line termination (OLT) can be connected to 8, 16 optical network unit (ONU)s with the Bit Error Rate(BER) of $10^{-9}$ when the distance between OLT and ONU is 10Km and transmitted optical powers are more than -3.8, -0.9dBm, respectively. The proposed WDM/TDM hybrid PON system can solve the problem of data rate limit in upstream which happened in the conventional TDM PON because the upstream data rate is proportional to ONU and does not require a light source in ONU and its control circuits in OLT, thus can be a useful technology for asymmetric optical subscriber networks.
Fiber-optic comb filters using a side-polished fiber coupler are proposed as multi-channel isolation filters on wavelength division multiplexing systems. We have demonstrated that the coupling efficiency between two waveguides is improved by the intermediate coupling layer in spite of the decrease of the optical power transfer between two waveguides due to the high-order modes of the overlay waveguide coupled with the side-polished single-mode fiber. When LiNbO$_3$with a 200-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thickness was applied as a planar-overlay-waveguide, the comb filtering characteristics with a 4 nm-channel-spacing were achieved and the maximum power coupling occurred at the 1-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thickness and the refractive index in range 1.52 to 1.53 of an intermediate coupling layer. If the intermediate coupling layer is optimized, an extinction ratio with more than 20 dB can be obtained. These experimental results are in good agreement with the BPM simulation.
