  • This experimental study was performed to lnvestigate the effects of the lergths dnd volume contents of glued hooked steel fiber for the fracture toughness and strength of c oncretc. The notched steel fiber reinforced concrete beams with different flber length(30, 60mm) and fiber volume content(O.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0%) were tested under 3-point benclmg, md 1 he flexural strengths, fracture energy and CMOD were obtained from the experimental data. The fracture energy v~ds used as d means to evaluate the fracture toughness ot concrete. The results showed that the frdcture toughness and 5trength of conuett. were generally increased ds the content of steel fiber was inc~edsed, arid the length of steel ilber had a great efiect on the flexural strength but little on the compressive itrength and fractule toughness. And also, considering the distributions of steel fiber, workablity and the maxinium size of coarse dqgregates, the optimum content of steel fiber seemed to be about 1.0 '0, and when lts length uias longer the results were somewhat tavorable.

  • The failure behavior of structures is changed under different loading rates, which might arise from the rate dependency of materials. This phenomenon has been focused in the engineering fields. However, the failure mechanism is not fully understood yet, so that it is hard to be implemented in numerical simulations. In this study, the numerical experiments to a brittle material are simulated by the Molecular Dynamics (MD) for understanding the rate dependent failure behavior. The material specimen with a notch is modeled for the compact tension test simulation. Lennard-Jones potential is used to describe the properties of a brittle material. Several dynamic failure features under 6 different loading rates are achieved from the numerical experiments, where remarkable characteristics such as crack roughness, crack recession/arrest, and crack branching are observed during the crack propagation. These observations are interpreted by the energy inflow-consumption rates. This study will provides insight about the dynamic failure mechanism under different loading rates. In addition, the applicability of the MD to the macroscopic mechanics is estimated by simulating the previous experimental research.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the interface debonding of RC beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet(CFS). The behavior of damaged RC beams strengthened with CFS is analytically investigated next using linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) approach and the finite element method. The study includes an investigation of the separation mode by interface fracture of the strengthening materials due to the interfacial shear and normal stresses. The numerical method is presented to obtain the value of interfacial fracture parameter such as the strain energy release rate. Based on the results of this study, it is found that the critical case occurs when the interfacial cracks occur within a short region of the flexural crack. The CFS strengthening has not an adequate factor of safety against interfacial debonding of CFS. Furthermore, for the thicknesses of the adhesive studied[1mm~3mm], it is no noticeable effect on the strain energy release rate.

  • Breakaway support for small signs of size $0.293\;m^2{\sim}0.360\;m^2$ using indented tube type bolt of D12 mm with 6 mm inner diameter has been developed and the structural strength of the support system for the wind load was verified through static shear and tension tests. One important value in understanding the dynamic behavior of sign post and impact vehicle is the fracture energy of the sign support. In this study, fracture energy needed to break the sign support was estimated by pendulum test and computer simulation using LS-DYNA program. Support system composed of 3 indented bolts was found to sustain the 43.1 kg$\sim$51.2 kg wind load safely. Fracture energy for one indented bolt was measured as 163.3J from the pendulum test, and was calculated as 153J from the LS-DYNA simulation. The closeness between these two values verified the validity of the simulation model.

  • The effect of temperature on the fracture energy, crack propagation, and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) was determined for particulate reinforced composites using the wedge splitting test. The materials that were used consisted of a polymer binder, an oxidizing agent, and aluminum particles. The test rate of the wedge splitting specimen was 50 mm/min, the temperature conditions were $50^{\circ}C$, room temperature, $-40^{\circ}C$, and $-60^{\circ}C$. The fracture energy, calculated from splitting load-crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) curves, increased with decreasing temperature from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C$. In addition, the strength of the particulate reinforced composites increased sharply at $-60^{\circ}C$, and the composites evidenced brittle fracture due to the glass transition temperature. The strain fields near the crack tip were analyzed using digital image correlation.

  • In this study, the fracture energy and displacement fields characteristics of particulate reinforced composite is evaluated. Wedge splitting test was performed at various temperatures. Fracture energy of material is calculated at room temperature, $-40^{\circ}C$ and $-60^{\circ}C$. Displacement and strain fields of specimen surface were visualized by using digital image correlation. The surface displacement fields of the specimens were analyzed by mark tracking method using digital image correlation. The results showed that, the fracture energy was decreased as temperature decreased. The surface displacement fields at room temperature were similar to there at $-40^{\circ}C$. The surface displacement fields at $-60^{\circ}C$ was significantly reduced because of the brittle behavior. The strain fields of the specimen surface decreased as temperature decreased form room temperature to $-60^{\circ}C$.
