  • Validation study of two radionuclide migration models for single fracture developed in geologic medium the hydrodynamic dispersion diffusion model(HDDM) and the channeling dispersion diffusion model(CDDM), was studied by migration experiment of tracers through an artificial granite fracture on the labolatory scale. The tracers used were Uranine and Sodium lignosulfonate know as nonsorbing material. The flow rate ranged 0.4 to 1.5 cc/min. Related parameters for the models were estimated by optimization technique. Theoretical breakthrough curves with experimental data were compared. In the experiment, it was deduced that the surface sorption for both tracers did not play an important role while the diffusion of Uranine into the rock matrix turned out to be an important mass transfer mechanism. The parameter characterizing the rock matrix diffusion of each model agreed well The simulated result showed that the amount of flow rate could not tell the CDDM from the HDDM quantitatively. On the other hand, the variation of fracture length gave influence on the two models in a different degree. The dispersivity of breakthrough curve of the CDDM was more amplified than that of the CDDM when the fracture length was increased. A good agreement between the models and experimental data gave a confirmation that both models were very useful in predicting the migration system through a single fracture.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of nitrate removal by conducting the column test in order to see the performance of surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) as a permeable reactive barrier material. The prediction of nitrate removal was tested using the one-dimensional advective-dispersive model fitted to the experimental breakthrough curve. A methodology for scaling up to in-situ permeable reactive barrier was also proposed. The breakthrough of nitrate in the column packed with SMZ was well predicted using linear equilibrium adsorption model. The breakthrough time and half-life obtained by breakthrough experiment with variation of flowrates were decreased with the increase of flowrates. When 10㎥/day of groundwater containing the 50 mg/l of nitrate is to be treated to satisfy the potable water quality criteria (10 mg/l) by SMZ reactive barrier, 300 tons of SMZ and about 6 years of breakthrough time will be required, suggesting that 165 million wons are needed as barrier material expenses in each 6 years besides the initial design and construction expenses and the minimal monitoring and maintenance expenses.

  • The adsorption characteristics of Sr ion in aqueous solution was examined using zeolite NaA powder (Z-PA) and pellets (Z-BA). In batch experiment, the adsorption of Sr ions by Z-BA and Z-PA was well expressed by pseudo-second-order kinetic model than psedo-first-order kinetic model. Experimental isotherm results was well fitted to Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacities obtained from Langmuir isotherm model were 233.32 mg/g for Z-PA and 164.60 mg/g for Z-BA, respectively. The continuous experiment results showed that the total Sr ion uptake (q) increased, but the breakthrough time, effluent volume ($V_{eff}$) and total removal (R) of Sr ion decreased with the Sr ion concentration. The breakthrough curves obtained from the experiment was modeled by Thomas model.

  • The effects of various factors such as adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity, species and concentration of adsorbates(benzene and toluene) and aspect ratio(L/D) on adsorption characteristics were investigated in a fixed bed with activated carbon. The breakthrough time in a fixed bed was decreased with the increasing of adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity and concentration of adsorbates. The interstitial velocity, concentration of adsorbates and adsorption temperature had influenced considerably upon the MTZ(mass transfer zone) and LUB(length of unused bed) obtained through the breakthrough curves, while aspect ratio(L/D) had smaller effect than former factors. Especially, the concentration of adsorbates among factors have the largest effect on MTZ and LUB. From comparison with the model isotherms, such as the Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich, the experimental isotherm data of benzene and toluene agreed farily well to three adsorption isotherm models.

  • Adsorption of phenol on activated carbon in a fixed bed was studied. The effects of fixed-bed length, superficial velocity (flow rate) and particle size of adsorbent on fixed-bed performance were investigated. Some characteristic parameters such as the breakthrough time ($t_{0.05}$), saturation time ($t_{0.95}$), length of mass transfer zone ($L_{MTZ}$), adsorptive capacity (W), and adsorption rate constant ($K_a$) were derived from the breakthrough curves. Adsorbent particle sizes significantly affected the shape of the breakthrough curve. Larger particle sizes resulted in an earlier breakthrough, a longer $L_{MTZ}$ and a lower adsorption rate. Superficial velocity was a critical factor for the external mass transfer during fixed-bed adsorption process. The external mass transfer resistance was dominant as increasing superficial velocity.

  • The operating variables of a desorption step were experimentally investigated tor the cycle of the process made up of benzene adsorption, steam desorption, and drying step. The effect of adsorbent regeneration depending on existence and nonexistence of drying step was studied by breakthrough curves obtained in the adsorption step of the second cycle. The duration of drying step was determined by the experimental results. In case that the amount of nitrogen gas was fixed, the regeneration efficiency increased with the amount of steam. However, the effect of steam decreased as the amount of nitrogen increased. Therefore, it would be possible to predict the optimum amount of steam comparing the amount of nitrogen gas with amount of steam in economic view.

  • Among various mass transfer models to express adsorption rates for any adsorption processes, the linear driving force (LDF) model is used most. The present investigation aims at finding whether this model may be applied to real adsorption process for separation and removal of benzene. Comparison of numerical simulation results calculated by the LDF model with experimental data allowed us to find the mass transfer coefficients that are most appropriate for a specific adsorption process. Various breakthrough curves were obtained from experiments performed at many different temperatures and pressures, which in turn produced suitable mass transfer coefficients. These dependencies of mass transfer coefficient on temperature and pressure were represented by an Arrhenius type- and a power law type empirical equation, respectively.

  • Removal efficiency of As(III) through oxidation and adsorption in column reactors was investigated at different ratios of manganese-coated sand(MCS) and iron-coated sand(ICS) : MCS-alone, ICS-alone and both of ICS and MCS. The breakthrough of arsenic immediately occurred from a column reactor with MCS-alone. However, most of the arsenic present in the effluent was identified as As(V) due to the oxidation of As(III) by MCS. While five-times delayed breakthrough of arsenic was observed from a column reactor with ICS-alone. At a complete breakthrough of arsenic, the removed As(III) was 36.1 mg with 1 kg ICS. To find an optimum ratio of ICS and MCS in the column packed with both ICS and MCS, the removal efficiency of As(III) was investigated at three different ratios of ICS/MCS with a fixed amount of ICS. The breakthrough time of arsenic was quite similar in the different ratios ICS/MCS. However, much slower breakthrough of arsenic was observed as the ratio of ICS/MCS decreased. As the ratio of ICS/MCS decreased the concentration of As(III) in the effluent decreased and then showed below 50 ppb at an equal amount of ICS and MCS, suggesting more efficient oxidation of As(III) by greater amount of MCS. When a complete breakthrough of arsenic occurred, the removed total arsenic with an equal amount of ICS and MCS was 68.5 mg with 1 kg of filter material.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the optimization of $I_2$ recovery process from $NH_4I$ solution, which is generated as by-product during the amination reaction of p-diiodobenzene (PDIB) for p-phenylenediamine (PPD) synthesis. The recovered $I_2$ is then recycled as a raw material for PDIB synthesis. We have employed a cation exchange resin to recover $I_2$ from $NH_4I$ sample solution, and determined the breakthrough point and exchange capacity from the breakthrough curve. Furthermore, we have suggested optimum conditions of our $I_2$ recovery process by measuring the purity and yield of recovered $I_2$ with respect to the concentrations of $NH_4I$ and oxidant ($H_2O_2$) solutions, the oxidation time, and the temperature of drying process. Finally, the yield and purity as high as 94.96% and 96.65%, respectively were obtained by reusing the residual solution still containing unrecovered iodide ions.
