Recently, patent images are growing importance and thus patent image retrieval is a growing area of research. However, most existing patent image retrieval systems use edges extracted in the images, whose performance is affected by the quality of edge detection in the image pre-processing step. To overcome this disadvantage, we propose a SURF-based patent image retrieval method which uses the morphological characteristics of the images. The proposed method detects SURF interest points with directions and computes regional histograms. We apply the proposed method to a patent image database with 2000 binary images and we show the proposed retrieval system achieves excellent results, even when the images have some loss or degradation.

(주)칩스앤미디어는 2003년 반도체 설계 자산(Semiconductor IP)생산을 시작으로 현재는 표준 영상 압축 기술인 MPEG 표준을 비롯하여 UHD 표준 압축 기술인 HEVC 등을 시장에 공급하고 있으며, 이미지 신호 처리(ISP) 및 CV IP 등의 시장 출시를 준비 중이다. HEVC의 개발 이후 ISO/IEC에서는 차세대 영상 압축 기술에 대한 표준화를 논의하고 있다. (주)칩스앤미디어는 표준 규격이 완료되기를 기다려 이를 구현하기보다, 한 발 더 앞서 행동하는 것이 현명하리라 판단했다. 직접 국제 표준을 제안함으로써 원천 특허를 확보하고자 한 것이다. This paper analyzed technologies related to video and sound device manufacturing closely related to media images, divided applicants into companies, research institutes, universities, individuals and the public, and conducted technical statistical analysis, collective intelligence analysis, and open innovation analysis. It is necessary to express innovative ideas through technology in research institutes or universities, and efforts are needed to expand technologies in the media field in universities. Looking at the contents of patents actually filed, patents filed by companies or individuals were mostly related to media technology, and patents filed by universities and research institutes were mostly related to media content. This means that hardware technology patents should be developed extensively and in-depth in an inseparable relationship between media technology and content, and should be a driving force for software content to play a more diverse and creative role.
