  • In this study, the trend of research and practice of science education for students with special educational needs was discussed in consideration of the aim of science education. Since the 1980s 'science for all' has been suggested as an important goal of science education and it has been pursued in the National Curriculum of Korea with differentiated teaching and learning approach. The meaning of 'science for all' should be expanded to science education for all students including minorities. However, comparing to 'normal' students, there have been relatively little researches and practices for those who need special educational supports as to meet their special talents or as to meet their special mental or physical challenges. Especially, the efforts for handicapped students or students with special educational needs (SEN) have been deficient in comparison to that of talented or gifted students. In this study the authors introduced the history and procedures of a 'Science Fair of Hope' with SEN students as an example of practice of science education for all, and then described the change among pre-service science teachers' attitudes towards disability and inclusive education, so as to discuss the practice and significance of science education for all students including SEN students.

In recent years, augmented reality has emerged as an important technology that can increase the effectiveness of special education programs. This study developed augmented reality contents focusing on the theme 'Weather and Life' in the 'Na' unit of the Basic Special School Curriculum, and explored the possibility of applying the contents to the science education. The contents design instructions and educational programs for this study were developed based on a focus-group interview conducted with five special school teachers and two developers. To explore the possibility of applying the augmented reality contents, a usability evaluation was conducted with 23 special school teachers and 18 students with intellectual disability. The results showed that the augmented reality contents had a high level of usability as the special school teachers received 4.73 and the students with intellectual disability received 4.75 out of 5. As a result of this study, we can draw a conclusion that there is a high possibility of applying augmented reality contents to science education for students with intellectual disability.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate 1) the perception of special school teachers on the significant skills required by students with intellectual disabilities(ID) for gaining and maintaining employment. For this study, a mixed method design including quantitative survey method and qualitative in-depth interview were utilized. First, through quantitative survey method, the perception on significant skills of students with ID for gaining and maintaining employment was investigated. At the same time, to overcome the limitation of a quantitative survey study, in-depth interviews with special school teachers were implemented. Through in-depth interviews, difficulties keeping students with ID from maintaining employment and significant skills for gaining & maintaining employment were investigated. Many students with ID have had difficulties in maintaining their employment for reasons such as behavioral problems, lack of social skills, or lack of diligence. Thus, many special teachers perceived the importance of educating the significant skills for maintaining their employment as well as gaining employment. For successful vocational transition, daily living skills, occupational skills, and personnel-social skills are significant. However, students' personal-social skills are more important than daily living skills and occupational skills. Among personal-social skills, students' sincerity, diligence, good-hearted personality, social skills, and ability for following directions of a supervisor are significant characteristics for gaining and maintaining employment.
