When the shear force governs the response of an RC element, as in the case of a low-rise shear wall, the effect of shear on the element's response is thought to be responsible for the 'pinching effect' in the hysteretic loops. However, it was recently shown that this undesirable pinching effect can be eliminated in the hysteretic load-deformation curves of a shear-dominant element if the steel grid orientation is properly aligned in the direction of the applied principal stresses. In this paper, the presence and absence of the pinching mechanism in the hysteretic loops of the shear stress-strain curves of RC elements was explained rationally using a compatibility aided truss model. The analytical results indicate that the pinching effect of the RC elements is strongly related to the direction of the steel arrangement. The area of the energy dissertation does not increase proportionally to the difference between the direction of the principal compressive stress and the direction of the steel arrangement.
The potential shear strength of reinforced concrete beams decreases after flexural yielding due to the decrease of the effective compressive strength of concrete in plastic hinge zone. A truss model considering shear deterioration in the plastic hinge zone was proposed in order to evaluate the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams failing in shear after flexural yielding This model can determine the potential shear strength of the beam by using a truss model. The potential shear strength gradually decreases as the increase of the axial strain of member. When the calculated potential shear strength decreases up to the flexural yielding strength, the corresponding rotation angle is defined as the ductile capacity of the beam. The predicted ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams is shown to be in a good agreement with experimental results.
The current ACI design code does not take into account the contribution of concrete for the torsional moment of reinforced concrete(RC) beams subjected to pure torsion. This code is not capable of evaluating the inter-effects between concrete and torsional reinforcement on the torsional resistance of the RC beams. Some test results indicated that the current ACI code was not successful in predicting the observed torsional moment of the RC beams with reasonable accuracy. The research reported in this paper provides an evaluation equation to predict the torsional moment of the RC beams subjected to pure torsion. The proposed equation is derived from the equilibrium as well as compatibility equations of the truss model for the cracked RC beams. Comparisons between the observed and calculated torsional moments of the 66 tested beams, showed reasonable agreement.
Longitudinal elongation develops in reinforced concrete beams that exhibit flexural yielding during cyclic loading. The longitudinal elongation can decrease the shear strength and deformation capacity of the beams. In the present study, nonlinear truss model analysis was performed to study the elongation mechanism of reinforced concrete beams. The results showed that residual tensile plastic strain of the longitudinal reinforcing bar in the plastic hinge is the primary factor causing the member elongation, and that the shear-force transfer mechanism of diagonal concrete struts has a substantial effect on the magnitude of the elongation. Based on the analysis results, a simplified method for evaluating member elongation was developed. The proposed method was applied to test specimens with various design parameters and loading conditions.

Recently, unconventional high-rise building shapes have attracted attention as a landmark of metropolitan cities and the search for innovative building forms in architecture is ongoing. In this study, $Isotruss^{(R)}$ grid(ITG) used in smaller scale structures was applied to building structural systems and its structural performance was examined. The structural behavior of an ITG was compared with that of a diagrid structure as a reference structure. The stiffness-based design method of the diagrid system was used for the preliminary design stage of member sizing in an ITG. The structural design of 16, 32, and 48-story buildings was carried out for the two systems with the same size. The angle of the inclined columns for ITG and diagrid was $59^{\circ}$ and $68.2^{\circ}$, respectively. The lateral stiffness, steel tonnage of the exterior frame, axial strength ratio, story drift ratio, and natural frequency of the two systems were compared. Based on the analysis result of 6 buildings, the two systems had similar structural capacity; 93.3% and 88.7% of the lateral load was carried by the perimeter frame in the ITG system and diagrid system, respectively. This suggests that the ITG system is better in arranging core columns. Therefore, the proposed ITG system has not only a unique façade, but also substantial structural capacity equivalent to the existing system.

The present study emphasizes a nonlinear model to predict the shear behaviour of reinforced concrete interior beam-column joints. To model the shear behaviour of a panel zone in the beam-column joint, a modified softened truss model theory for in-plane shear prediction was introduced. This relationship was changed to define the characteristics for the rotational spring to represent the shear deformation in the joint by an equivalent moment-rotation relationship from the joint equilibrium. The analysis model was compared with experiments on reinforced concrete interior beam-column joints that were subjected to axial and shear forces, and the current model was found to accurately predict not only the shear force but also the shear deformation in the joint.
The previous strut-and-tie models (STMs) to evaluate the shear strength of squat shear walls with aspect ratio less than 2.0 do not consider the axial load transfer of concrete strut and individual shear transfer contribution of horizontal and vertical shear reinforcing bars in the web. To overcome the limitation of the existing models, a simple STM was established based on the crack band theory of concrete fracture mechanics. The equivalent effective width of concrete strut having a stress relief strip was determined from the neutral axis depth and effective factor of concrete strength. The shear transfer mechanism of shear reinforcement at the extended crack band zone was calculated from an internally statically indeterminate truss system. The shear transfer capacity of concrete strut and shear reinforcement was then driven using the energy equilibrium in the stress relief strip and crack band zone. The shear strength predictions of squat shear walls evaluated from the current models are in better agreement with 150 test results than those determined from STMs proposed by Siao and Hwang et al. Furthermore, the proposed STM gives consistent agreement with the observed trend of the shear strength of shear walls against different parameters.

The typical truss-lattice material successively packed by repeated cubic symmetric unit cells consists of sub-elements (SE) proposed in this study. The representative continuum model for this truss-lattice material such as the effective strain and stress relationship can be formulated by the homogenization procedure based on the notation of averaged mechanical properties. The volume fractions of micro-scale struts have a significant influence on the effective strength as well as the relative density in the lattice plate with replicable unit cell structures. Most of the strength contribution in the lattice material is induced by axial stiffness under uniform stretching or compression responses. Therefore, continuum based constitutive models composed of homogenized member stiffness include these mechanical characteristics with respect to strength, internal stress state, material density based on the volume fraction and even failure modes. It can be also recognized that the stress state of micro-scale struts is directly associated with the continuum constitutive model. The plastic flow at the micro-scale stress can extend the envelope of the analytical stress function on the surface of macro-scale stress derived from homogenized constitutive equations. The main focus of this study is to investigate the basic topology of unit cell structures with the cubic symmetric system and to formulate the plastic models to predict pressure dependent macro-scale stress surface functions.
A shear experiment of one-way monotonic loading was carried out with the shear span ratio as the main experimental variable for reinforced concrete beam. Using the finite element analysis as the experimental analysis tool and the analysis method to compute the shear resistance of small shear span ratio, a new macro-model composed of crooked main strut and sub strut is proposed in consideration of the effect of bond action between re-bar and concrete based on the experimental result. The experimental finding affirmed the validity of the proposed macro-model when the shear span ratio was at or below 0.75 and confirmed that the experimental result was the most consistent with the computed analysis result when the effective factor of concrete compressive strength was set at 0.75.

In this study, a new approach employing 3-dimensional strut-tie models for analysis and design of 3-dimensional structural concrete with disturbed regions that are not properly occupied by current design codes is proposed. In addition, a computer graphics program for the practical application of the approach is developed. The approach adopts a grid strut-tie model to exclude the subjectivity in the selection of strut-tie model and evaluates the effective strength of concrete strut by considering the 3-dimensional failure criteria of concrete and the deviation angles between the struts and compressive principal stress trajectories. To verify the appropriateness of the approach, nine pile caps tested to failure are analyzed and a bridge pier is designed. The analysis and design results are compared with those obtained by several different methods.
