  • In the present study, thickness of MOR zeolite membranes was controlled by changing seed size, seeding amount, and aging time of hydrothermal solution, and then effect of membrane thickness on pervaporative ethanol dehydration for 90 wt.% ethanol-water mixture was investigated. First, nanosize MOR zeolite seeds with a diameter of 20 to 30 nm was successfully prepared by planetary milling a laboratory synthesized MOR zeolites and the coating amount was controlled by seed concentration and infiltration volume of coating solution during vacuum-assisted seeding. As seeding amount decreased, membrane thickness was reduced up to around $4{\mu}m$. The MOR zeolite membrane having a thickness of $4{\mu}m$ showed a water/ethanol separation factor of 760 and water flux of $1.0kg/m^2h$. The excellent water flux was due to the reduced membrane thickness which was derived from the nanosize seed. Therefore, it could be concluded that membrane thickness control by using nanosize seed can be a crucial factor to improve pervaporative water flux of MOR zeolite membrane.

  • In the present study the membrane filtration characteristics of a commercially available synthetic water-based cutting oil through two kinds of ultrafiltration membranes (HF1-45-CM50 and HF1-43-CM100) with molecular weight cut-offs of 50,000 and 100,000, respectively, have been investigated in detail. Among these membranes, the hydrophilic one (HF1-45-CM50) was found to show a satisfactory result for both the permeate flux and the permeability of oil components, whereas the permeate flux obtained with the hydrophobic membrane (HF1-43-CM100) appears to be significantly low, indicating that synthetic cutting oil was easily wetted on the hydrophobic membrane surface and induced more membrane fouling. The effect of material characteristics of the membrane on the filtration characteristics was found to be much more significant compared with the mean pore size of the membrane. Backflushing by nitrogen gas was applied to reduce the formation of a gel layer and membrane fouling. With the hydrophilic membrane, the backflushing was found to increase the permeate flux, whereas the backflushing resulted in a decrease in flux for the hydrophobic membrane. The flux recovery was observed to be highest when the membranes fouled with waste synthetic cutting oil were immersed into a cleaning solution for more than 72 hours and then backflushed by nitrogen gas.

  • This is the research about the concentration of trace citrus flavor components in water by pervaporation. We have investigated the permeation characteristics depending on the material and formation of membranes using four siloxane-based polymer composite membranes. We have also chosen the optimal membrane and investigated the permeation characteristics depending on the feed temperature, concentration and flow rate. And then it has been analyzed by using resistance-in series model. In the permeation experiment of citrus essence aroma model solution through the four siloxane-based polymer composite membranes, PVDF/POMS membranes have showed the best flavor flux and enrichment factor. As a result of the permeation experiment depending on the feed temperature, concentration and flow rate, we can find that as the feed temperature and concentration increase, the flavor flux increases while the enrichment factor decreases. And the flavor flux and enrichment factor increased as the flow rate increases.

  • In this study transmembrane pressure (TMP) was measured with respect to permeate flux through the submerged flat sheet membrane for the emulsion and semi-synthetic cutting oil solutions. The effective area and nominal pore size of the used microfiltration membrane were $0.02m^2$ and $0.15{\mu}m$, respectively. The experiments were carried out simultaneously for run/stop (R/S) and sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO) modes using two submerged membrane module in the reservoir. TMP for the case of SFCO was maintained under 60% of R/S, and the effect on TMP drop decreased as the permeate flux increased for emulsion cutting oil solution. Membrane fouling for the semisynthetic solution showing low turbidity was induced lower comparing to the emulsion solution. Also, the effect on TMP drop for SFCO decreased during long-term operation.

  • A laboratory-scale experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of soluble microbial products(SMP) on permeate flux in the submerged membrane separation activated sludge process. Continuous and batch filtration test were operated to understand mechanism of relationship between membrane fouling and SMP. Synthetic wastewater(phenol) was used as a carbon source. Hydraulic retention time(HRT) and mixed-liquor volatile suspended solids(MLVSS) of the reactor were kept at 12 hours and 9.000mg VSS/L, respectively. Batch filtration tests ($J_{60}/J_o$) using the mixed liquor from reactor showed that the increase of accumulated SMP concentration in the reactor caused to the decreasing permeate flux and the increasing of the adhesion matters which form cake and gel layer. The resistance value of cake layer was measured $2.9{\times}10^{10}{\sim}4.0{\times}10^{10}(1/m)$, this value showed more significant effect on flux drop than that of among other resistance layers. Batch phenol-degradation experiment was conducted to observe SMP type expected $SMP_{nd}$ and $SMP_{e}$ (SMP resulted from endogenous cell decomposition), these are non-biodegradable high molecular weight organic matter and playa significant role in permeate flux drop. Also, SMP concentration was accumulated as increased of HRT against flux drop.

  • The effects of electrical fields on the efficiencies in ultrafiltration for protein separation were explored. The experiments were proceeded under constant transmembrane pressure (THP) using protein (albumin and lysozyme) solutions. For ultrafiltrations, cellulose membranes with molecular weight cut off (MWCO) 30 kDa were used. It is found that electrical field improved the filtration flux of albumin solution. The electrical field showed another interesting effect for filtration of protein solution. Depending on the electrical charges of protein molecules, the electrical field promoted or hindered the permeation of proteins through membranes. With the effect of electrical field, not only the permeation flux but also the selectivity of ultrafiltration could be improved.

  • Permeation behavior of the semiconductor rinsing wastewater contammg Si particles was examined by ultrafiltration using the polyolefin tubular membrane. Flux decline with time was due to the growth of Si cake deposited on the membrane surface and the pore plugging by Si particles. Cake filtration from the cross flow application is compared to the combination of pore blocking and cake filtration from the dead-end application. The cake resistance is 3.16 x $10^{12}$ -4.34 X $\times$$10^{12}$ $m^{-1}$ for the cross flow and 6.6 x $\times$$10^{12}$ -12.19 X $\times$$10^{12}$ $\times$$m^{-1}$for the dead-end flow, respectively. At the initial stage of operation, permeation flux of cross flow type was 1.7 time higher than that of the dead end flow type. Permeation flux of cross flow was about 42 e 1m2 hr and the rejection rate of Si particles was about 96 %. The average particle size of Si particle in the permeate was 20 nm.

  • In the present study, disc-type LSCF/GDC (20 : 80 vol%) dual-phase membranes having porous LSC/GDC (50 : 50 vol%) active layers were prepared and effect of active layers on oxygen ion transport behavior was investigated. Introduction of active layers improved drastically oxygen flux due to enhanced electron conductivity and oxygen surface exchange activity. As firing temperature of active layer increased from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$, oxygen flux increased due to improved contact between membrane and active layer or between grains of active layer. The enhanced contact would improve oxygen ion and electron transports from active layer to membrane. Also, as thickness of active layer increased from 10 to $20{\mu}m$, oxygen flux decreased since thick active layer rather prevented oxygen molecules diffusing through the pores. And, STF infiltration improved oxygen flux due to enhanced oxygen reduction reaction rate. The experimental data announces that coating and property control of active layer is an effective method to improve oxygen flux of dual-phase oxygen transport membrane.
