Preparation of Sulfonated Polysulfone Membranes (Sulfonated Polysulfone막의 제조 및 투과특성)

  • This study is undertaken to investigate the major factor which causes a fouling phenomenon in membrane separation system and effect of hydrophilic treatment on fouling repression of hydrophobic polymer (polysulfone, PSf). Chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) and sulfuric acid as a sulfonating agents are used to produce sulfonated PSf (SPSf). SPSf membrane is prepared under several conditions to investigate it's separation process. The extent of fouling-repression is measured by membrane filtration index (MFI) value. With increasing the ion exchange capacity (I.E.C), the flux of SPSf membrane is decreased but the rejection is increased and the flux is less reduced. According to the MFI value, the SPSf membrane has a fouling-retardant effect.

  • 한외여과법을 이용한 식품 페액의 단백질 분리, 회수에 관한 조작조건의 최적화를 위하여 cheese whey의 투과유속에 대한 세정효과의 영향과 조작압과 한계유속의 상관관계를 측정하여 다음의 결과를 얻었다. 세정의 효과로부터 유지 전용세제를 사용한 경우가 막의 투과유속의 회복율이 가장 높았으므로 whey중에 소량 함유되어 있는 유지분이 막의 투과유속의 저하에 큰 영향을 미침을 알 수 있었고, cheese whey를 한외여과법에 의하여 농축, 분리하는 경우 사용압력범위 $1{\sim}10kg/cm^2$에서 분획분자량 100,000인 막을 사용하는 경우 조작압력 약 $7kg/cm^2$에서 한계유속에 달하였으며, 그 이상으로는 압력을 가하여도 투과유속은 상승하지 않았다. 또한 이력현상의존재도 고려하여 볼 때 과도한 압력은 한외여과의 경우 투과유속의 상승에 효과가 없음을 알 수 있었다.

Preparation of Polyethersulfone Ultrafiltration Membranes Containing $ZrO_2$ Nanoparticles by Combining Phase-inversion Method/Sol-gel Technique (상변환/졸-겔법에 의한 $ZrO_2$ 나노입자 함유 Polyethersulfone 한외여과 막의 제조)

  • The asymmetric hybrid membranes of polyethersulfone (PES) and $ZrO_2$ nanoparticles were prepared via new one-step procedure combining simultaneously the phase-inversion method and the sol-gel technique. The optimum contents of $Zr(PrO)_4\;and\;HNO_3$ catalyst were determined by the adsorption experiments of phosphate anion onto the resulting hybrid membranes. The maximum adsorption of phosphate anion is obtained at the conditions of 0.15 mL $Zr(PrO)_4$ addition per 1 mL PES and 30 mL $HNO_3$ addition per 1 mL $Zr(PrO)_4$. Variation of morphology, performance and incorporated $ZrO_2$ amount of the resulting hybrid membranes were discussed and determined using SEM, pure water flux, TGA, ICP, XRD and contact angle measurements. Increasing $Zr(PrO)_4$ addition into casting solution, pure water flux is increased and $ZrO_2$ amount in the hybrid membrane is maximized at the conditions 0.15 mL $Zr(PrO)_4$ addition per 1 mL PES. The prephosphatation of PES-$ZrO_2$ hybrid membrane was studied to modify the surface characteristics of membrane. Ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution was performed in a dead-end cell using both a bare (non-phosphated) and a phosphated hybrid membrane. It is revealed that both the permeate flux and BSA rejection were increased as about 40% by prephosphatation of hybrid membrane. These results may be explained on the basis of the increase of membrane hydrophilicity, which was determined from contact angle measurements.

  • 정밀여과 및 한외여과에 의해 단백질 등과 같은 거대분자 물질을 분리정제할 경우 피할 수 없는 문제점은 막에 의해 분리된 거대부자들이 막표면에 쌓이는 농도분극(concentration polarization)현상과 이 누적된 거대분자가 막과의 상호작용에 의해 막표면 또는 막세공 내에 비가역적으로 침적되는 막오염(membrane fouling)현상이 일어난다는 점이다. 특히 막표면 또는 막세공 내에 분리대상 물질이 비가역적으로 침적되어 발생되는 막오염은 상대적으로 가역적 침적 과정인 농도분극보다 제어 또는 억제가 어려워 최근의 막분리 분야 연구의 상당 부분이 막오염 유발요인의 해석, 막오염을 효율적으로 제어 또는 억제하기 위한 방법의 연구에 집중되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 단백질 용액의 정밀여과시 단백질 변성이 막오염에 미치는 영향을 체계적으로 규명하기 위한 연구의 일환으로서 BSA를 분리대상 물질로하여, BSA용액을 미리 기계적 Shear(펌프 및 sonification), 열, 화학적 방법(pH 및 변성제)으로 변성시킨 후, 이 용액을 대상으로 회분식 정밀여과 실험을 수행하여 단백질 응집체 형성이 막투과량 감소에 미치는 영향을 실험적으로 검토하였으며, 각각의 막투과량 감소 특성을 아래의 4가지 blocking filtration law로서 해석하였다: complete blocking law, intermediate blocking law, standard blocking law, cake filtration law.

Preparation and Characterization of Mixed-matrix Membranes Containing MIL-100(Fe) for Gas Separation (MIL-100(Fe)를 함유한 혼합기질막(mixed-matrix membranes, MMMs)의 제조 및 기체 투과 특성 연구)

  • Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) containing MIL-100(Fe), a MOF type, were fabricated in this study. MMMs up to 30 wt% MOF loading were prepared, and their gas permeabilities were tested. $H_2$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, and $CH_4$ gas permeabilities increased with the MOF loading, while $SF_6$, the largest kinetic diameter in this study, exhibited reduction of gas permeability with the loading. Ideal gas selectivity of $N_2/SF_6$ improved by 40% as compared with pure polyimide membrane, suggesting the proposed MMMs were suitable for $N_2/SF_6$ separation.

  • Metal-ceramic composite membrane have been developed to separate hydrogen from mixed gases, particularly product streams generated during coal gasification and methane reforming. Cermet membrane was fabricated with palladium as hydrogen-permeable metal and $Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ) as ceramic supporter. As-prepared membrane showed dense structure with continuous channel of palladium. The hydrogen flux of Pd/YSZ membrane have been measured in the range of 0.5~2 atm with 100% hydrogen gas. The results indicate that the hydrogen flux was 0.333 mL/$min{\cdot}cm^2$ at $450^{\circ}C$ and 2 atm. The crack was formed in the surface and cross-section of membrane.

Permeation behavior with the ionic Characteristic of charged membrane and solute concentration in revers osmosis process for separation of anionic surfactant (음이온계 유화제를 분리/회수하기 위한 역삼투 공정에서 막의 이온특성과 용질농도에 따른 투과거동의 변화)

  • PTFE 합성공정에서 대량으로 사용하는 고가의 음이온계 유화제를 분리/회수하는 것은 경제적인 문제 뿐만 아니라 환경적으로도 매우 중요하다. 음이온계 유화제의 회수에는 Water-evaporation, ion-exchange, freezing, electrodialysis등의 방법을 사용할 수 있다. 그러나 회수에 드는 경비가 높고 장치가 복잡하다는 단점이 잇다. 반\ulcorner에 막분리 공정은 장치가 간단하고 상대적으로 경비가 적게 든다는 장점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 음이온계 유화제를 분리/회수하기 위해서 역삼투 공정을 사용하였다. 그러나 역삼투 공정과 같이 압력을 분리의 구동력으로 하는 막분리 공정에서는 농도분극 및 막오염 현상에 의한 투과량의 감소가 심각하게 일어나며 전체적으로 막분리 공정의 경제성을 떨어뜨리는 주된 요인이 된다. 특히 이온성 막을 사용할 경우 막과 이온성 용질간의 정전기적 포텐셜이 화학적 포텐셜과 함께 투과분리의 구동력을 이루게 되므로 투과거동이 매우 달라지게 된다. 본 연구에서는 막 재료의 이온특성과 음이온성 용질의 농도에 따른 막오염 현상의 관찰 및 이것이 투과거동에 미치는 영향을 관찰하였다. 이를 위해 Sodium alginate, Chitosan, Poly(vinyl alcohol)을 이용하여 각각 음이온성, 양이온성, 중성 막을 제조하여 투과거동을 관찰하였다.

The Effect of Operating Conditions on Cross-Flow Ultrafiltration with using Polyethylene Glycol (Polyethylene Glycol을 이용한 Cross-Flow Ultrafiltration에 있어서 운전조건의 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of running time, operating pressure, feed concentration and circulation rate on the permeation flux and the rejection rate in cross-flow ultrafiltration of polyethylene glycol(PEG) solution of molecular weight($M_w$) 8000 and 20000. The membranes used for this study were MWCO(Molecular Weight Cut-off) of 6 K and 20 K. The experiments were performed at the operating pressures of 7, 14 and 28 psi, the circulation rates of 1000 mL/min and 2000 mL/min, and the feed concentration of 100 mg/L and 1000 mg/L. At a constant pressure, the permeation flux and the observed rejection($R_o$) appeared to be approximately constant within the range of running time, 0~480 min. The permeation flux increased with increasing the operating pressure, and it increased with decreasing the feed concentration and decreasing Mw of PEG at a given pressure. On the other hand, $R_o$ decreased slightly with increasing the operating pressure. However, $R_o$ increased with increasing the feed concentration and increasing of $M_w$ of PEG at a given pressure. The variation in circulation rates did not cause any significant influence on the permeation flux. Increasing of circulation rate caused the increase of $R_o$, and $\alpha$ was increased substantially with the decrease of $M_w$ of PEG. The dimensionless parameter. permeability ratio($\alpha$), which was used to investigate flux-pressure behavior, was increased with the increase in circulation rate and operating presure. The value of $\alpha$ was less than 1 in all cases. The estimated intrinsic rejection(R). which was obtained from mass transfer coefficient, was decreased with the increase of operating pressure. However R increased with the increase of linear velocity of feed and $M_w$ of PEG.

  • In the process of pervaporation separation for aqueous ethanol solution through cellulose tai-acetate(CTA) membrane, the modelling on the solution-diffusion permeation mechanism was built up on the basis of sorption and permeation experimental results. Also its function type and parameter were examined. The composition of sorption equilibrium in three component system(Ethanol/Water/CTA) were compared with the calculated value by Flory-Huggins' equation using the pure component sorption data. In order to apply the thermodynamic equilibrium relationship between the membrane free composition in the membrane and the equilibrium composition in the liquid phase, the apparent activity this system, however, the results were not satisfied. Diffusion equations were expressed with the concentration gradient considering permeate alone, and a concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient which includes a parameter was used. And this model was fitted with the measured permeation rates. If the permeation rate and the amount of sorption of one component were much larger than those of the other, the bulk flow term could not be negligible. The flux and selectivity were increased with increasing temperature, and with decreasing downstream pressure.

Preparation of Oligo Hyaluronic Acid by Hydrolysis and Its Application as a Cosmetic Ingredient (저분자량 히알루론산의 제조 및 화장품에의 응용)

  • In order to investigate the potential of very low molecular weight hyaluronic acid(oligo HA) as a cosmetic ingredient, we first measured its cytotoxicity in fibroblast, keratinocyte, and SIRC cell lines. For efficacy test, its moisturizing effect and penetration rate were evaluated in an artificial skin system and Caco-2 cells. Oligo HA did not show any cytotoxicity at a concentration of 300 ${\mu}g/mL$ in fibroblasts and 1,000 ${\mu}g/mL$ in keratinocytes but it showed weak proliferation. In vitro ocular test, oligo HA showed negligible cytotoxicity at the maximum concentrations used(2,000 ${\mu}g/mL$) in SIRC cells. In the test of the single and repeated cutaneous applications, oligo HA under occlusive patch did not provoke any cumulative irritation and sensitization. Oligo HA at a concentration of 0.01 % exhibited a more potent moisturizing effect than hyaluronic acid at a concentration of 0.01 %. In the permeability test using artificial skin and Caco-2 cell lines, hyaluronic acid(M.W. $1.1{\times}10^6$) was hardly observed in the down medium of the inserts. On the other hand, oligo HA(M.W. 5,000) was detected in the down medium up to 16.0 % at 6 h in Caco-2 cell culture and up to 90 % at 6 h in an artificial skin system. These results suggest that oligo HA could be useful as an active ingredient for cosmetics.
