  • Geophysical survey for establishing a wide site for the distribution of water content, wetting front infiltration due to the rainfall, and distribution of groundwater level has been performed by using 8round penetration radar (GPR) method, electrical resistivity method, and so on. On the other hand, a narrow area survey was performed to use a permittivity method such as time domain reflectometry, frequency domain reflectometry, and amplitude domain reflectometry methods for estimating volumetric water content, soil density, and concentration of contaminant in surface and subsurface. The permittivity methods establish more corrective physical parameters than different found survey technologies mentioned above. In this study for establishment of infiltration behaviors for wetting front in the unsaturated soil caused by an artificial rainfall, soil physical parameters for volumetric water content, pore water pressure, and pore air pressure were measured by FDR measurement device and pore water pressure meter which are installed in the unsaturated weathered granite soil with different depths. Consequently, the authors were proposed to a new establishment method for analyzing the variations of volumetric water content and wetting front infiltration from the responses of infiltrating pore water in the unsaturated soil.

  • Two solution to soil ratios, 2 : 1 and 5 : 1 were tested to determine the appropriate ratio in the sorption measurement off. sulfoxide for Wahiawa soil samples, 0-20 cm, 40-60 cm and 100-120 cm. and Salinas soil samples, 0-15cm and 115-130cm. One ${\mu}$ mol/L f.sulfoxide was used as an initial equilibration concentration. Sorption of f.sulfoxide at 5 : 1 ratio showed appropriate mixing, while sorption at 2 : 1 ratio indicated insufficient mixing during the various batch equilibration times (4, 12, 24 and 48 hours). For most samples the degree of sorption was about 20-50%, which falls in the desired range (20-80%) at the 5 : 1 ratio. An exception was with the low-sorptive Wahiawa subsoil in which the ranges were below 20%. Thus the 5 : 1 ratio can be used for f.sulfoxide sorption measurement. Four equilibration times (4, 12, 24 and 48 hours) and four concentrations(0.1, 1.0, 5.0 and $10{\mu}mol/L$) were used to determine the appropriate equilibration time for Wahiawa and Salinas soils. Sorption increased over all equilibration times, indicating no complete equilibrium within 48 hours. Apparent equilibrium was reached in 4 hours, and sorption increased slowly until 24 hours and faster thereafter, except for the Wahiawa soil, 100-120 cm. The recommended equilibration time is 24 hours, since it may eliminate the insufficient sorption and yet avoid undesirable transformation.

  • This study performs to evaluate the role of filter material at alluvial well for intake of riverbank filtration and the applicability and improvement effect of dual filter well. To achieve this objective, dual filter intake well and single filter intake well were installed with different filter conditions at riverbank free surface aquifer in soil layer then we evaluated filter material condition, permeability, optimum yield and well efficiency according to yield in drawdown test. As a results, we assumed forming dual filter layer minimizes sudden speed changes at boundary between aquifer and filter layer by cushioning of groundwater flow. This suppresses warm current then intake groundwater efficiently, therefore it seems decreasing peripheral groundwater level changes in spite of higher intake water amount than single filter intake well. Furthermore, we confirmed by test, installing dual filter improves permeability, optimum yield and well efficiency. The result will be used by combining with former study to set up standard of design/construction of dual filter intake well at alluvial aquifer layer. Furthermore, we expect this result will be used to prove application effect of dual filter intake well compared to single filter one and radial collector well which are mainly applied on riverbank filtration.

  • Variations in matric suction were compared between field measurements and numerical analysis for a tailings dump slope. We performed an analysis of slope stability using precipitation records measured in the field, selecting the period (72 hours) of highest rainfall intensity during the field monitoring, for which the matric suction and rainfall records measured in the field were analyzed. In addition, we applied the precipitation records of this period to the numerical analysis. SEEP/W and SLOPE/W were used to analyze the seepage flow in the slope due to rainfall and to investigate the slope stability considering the wetting front depth from the ground surface, respectively. The seepage analysis, using SEEP/W, was carried out on the rainfall data obtained in the field. Comparisons between the field monitoring data and simulation results for matric suction show some quantitative difference but similar patterns of temporal variation. According to the results of slope stability analysis using SLOPE/W and the results of seepage analysis, the safety factor of the slope showed a sudden increase at the point of rapid increase in rainfall intensity. It then recovered because subsequent rainfall was scarce. Therefore, the stability of the tailings dump slope can be reasonably estimated if seepage and slope stability analyses, based on precipitation records, have been carried out.

  • In this paper the auther investigated the chemical properties, process of humification and type of humic acid in soils which were reclaimed by farming for cultivation in Kangwondo. The results obtained in this studies were summarized as follows: 1. General chemical components of these soil were similar to the ordinary soil but C.E.C. and humus contents were found much more 2. Humic acid and fulvic acid which were extracted with NaOH from soil were greater than those of Na-pyrophosphate(Na-p.) and NaF. Hmus contents and PQ% were increased much more in the upper layer than in the lower layer. 3. Degree of humification of humic acid extracted with NaOH. was very similar to those extracted with Na-pyrophosphate. Humification degree of humic acid extracted with NaF was lower than humic acid which were extracted with NaOH and Na-pyrophosphate. But humification degree of humic acid extracted with NaOH was similar to that with Na-pyrophosphate. Humic acid in B soil and the upper layer was higher than A, C soil and the lower layer of soil, in humification degree. 4. Humic acids extracted with NaOH and Na-pyrophosphate from soil were fractionated by Mg into two parts ${\alpha}$ type and ${\beta}$ type humic acid. Humic acids of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ type extracted with NaOH were higher than these of Na-pyrophosphate in humification degree. In this soil the humification degree of humic acid was not changed during the period of cultivation. 5. ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ type humic acid extracted with NaOH were very similar to the humic acid extracted with Na-pyrophosphate in shapes of absorption curves.

  • This research was designed to know optimize soil sampling time, soil sampling depth and fertilizers according to season and soil condition in the golf course. One of the results was revealed that sampling point and depth have to be consistent for much fluctuation by sampling. Especially, Soil pH is decreased by soil depth remarkably. Top soil (0-5 cm depth) pH is higher than the sub soils (5-10 cm, 10-15 cm depth). It was confirmed that soil pH would increase when the state of soil is appropriate to H$^{+}$ ion concentration. Therefore, Soil pH modification is always not determined by lime content rather than soil conditions, i.e., Organic matter content, moisture content, and soil air content. More effective fertilizing time according to soil pH correction is the middle of october, and it's quantity is 100 g/$m^2$ silicate and 200 g/$m^2$ lime (Pel-Lime Mini) in this experiment. Recommended soil sampling method for acidity measurement is dividing by soil depth into each 5 cm respectively, rather than mixing 15 cm total soil.

  • This experiment was conducted to know the difference in weed population in the five cropping patterns kept same for six years from 1976 such as ricebarley, potato-rice, pea-rice, rice-rye, and rice-fallow. More and many weeds were growing in single cropping field than double cropping field. Dominant weed species in pea-rice and potato-rice cropping patterns were M. vaginalis and S. hotarui, M. vaginalis and P. distinctus. Coefficient of similarity of the cropping patterns between pea-rice and potato-rice appeared higher than single cropping system. However, pea-rice and rice-fallow cropping patterns showed low coefficient of similarity.

  • This study was conducted to develop rational soil management and enhance the productivity of lands converted from paddy soils. Specifically, the changes in the soil physical properties brought about by the change in land usage from paddy soil were evaluated. This was carried out from 1999 to 2001 at 50 site in large-scale converted paddy fields of Kimcheon, Youngcheon, Gyeongsan and Milyang in the Youngnam region, categorized according to soil texture and drainage class. The ridge height of converted paddy soils was higher in coarse-textured and poorly-drained soils than in fine-textured and well-drained soils. The gray color of the surface soil was of lesser degree in converted soils than paddy soils and more notable in welldrained soils. The porosity ratio and the formation of aggregate structure were higher, and the appearance of soil mottling was deeper in converted paddy fields than in paddy soils. The glaying layer "g" of surface soil degraded with time. The porosity and amount of water stable aggregate was found to increase with time after conversion. The penetration resistance of the converted paddy soil was lower and deeper with time after conversion. The soil aeration of the converted paddy soil was lower in sandy loam than in loamy soil. Furthermore, soil aeration was influenced by ridge height and drainage class in poorly-drained soils.

  • In this study we performed risk evaluation based on parameters using the SINMAP, GIS-based extended program in order to predict ground disaster that is frequent recently. As for the risk evaluation, in order to understand the effects of parameters, we defined that the ranges of internal friction angles and T/R values as important variables had three and four patterns, respectively. The results of the interpretation were compared with those of the existing landslide in order to identify landslide flow and to evaluate the applicability of the parameters. The analysis of the geomorphologic saturated zone showed that the boundary saturated zone and the saturated zone were almost consistent with the site of avalanche of earth and rocks and the area of underground water convergence was correlated to the area where collapse started, indicating that the geomorphologic saturated zone may serve as an index for estimating possibility of landslide when used with slope distribution, colluvial soil, and structures inducing landslide in combination. When the lower limit of the internal friction angle increased more, the upper threshold decreased by 50 to 70% and the influence on the stability index was higher, but the influence was declined within the range of lower wetness index. The analysis of changes based on wetness index range showed that all the groups have similar SI distribution, except for the one in which mean altitude values are applied, indicating that the results are susceptible more by the internal friction angle than by the wetness index.

  • This study examined the behavior change of river levees during an earthquake by numerical analysis. Unlike conventional research using artificial earthquake waves, earthquake analysis was performed using real earthquake waves. The behavior of a river levee before and after an earthquake was compared and analyzed quantitatively. Studies show that the river levee has a safety factor of approximately 28.5% due to an earthquake. On the other hand, the minimum standard safety factor is satisfied. Vertical effective stress has decreased by 81.8% due to excess pore-water pressure generated by the earthquake. In addition, liquefaction occurs in most of the foundation soil. An examination of the stress-displacement behavior due to the earthquake revealed a large amount of settlement in the backfill layer. Most of the foundation soil yielded. Therefore, the target river levee is quite vulnerable to earthquakes. Through the results of this study, the necessity of refreshing the seismic design standards for river levees is required. This study can be used as basic data for estimating the approximate damage level and vulnerable areas.
