  • The soil moisture has an important effect on growth and development of highbush blueberry (HB), mainly because the root system, devoid of root hairs, is superficial. Moreover, the texture and organic matter content of Korean soil is different from the main producing counties, such as USA and Canada. To facilitate the growth and development of HB and long-term maintenance of productivity, the research related to soil moisture condition in Korea should be the priority. This study was performed to investigate the growth properties of the HB in various soil moisture conditions in order to determine the irrigation trigger point and optimum soil water potential. The texture of soil used in this experiment was loam. For the experiments, the soil was mixed with peatmoss at a rates 30% (v/v). Irrigation was scheduled at -3, -4, -5, -8, -15 and -22 kPa soil water potential then investigated leaf macronutrient, bush growth, and fruit properties. The leaf K content of HB showed the same trend in the soil water potential, but Leaf P and Mg content was highest in -5 and -22 kPa, respectively. The productivity and growth amount of HB showed the peak at the range of -4~-8 kPa as normal distribution pattern, and greatly decreased at above -15 kPa. Total dry weight and Cane diameter were highest at -4 kPa, plant width, fruit weight and yield were highest at -5 kPa, and plant height, cane number and shoot tension were highest at -8 kPa. Soluble solids content showed same trend in the soil water potential, but titratable acidity, anthocyanins and total polyphenols were not significantly different. Therefore, the optimal soil water potential for the development and a maximum production of HB were a range of -4~-8 kPa, and the recommended ideal irrigation trigger point was within -15 kPa.

  • The experiment which imposed the water stress to tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) plant was carried at the late of maximum growth period. In order to know the influence of drought stress on the growth and developmemt of tobacco leaves of different position and to elucidate the physiological response of plant to various soil water content, stomatal conductance, and leaf water potential were measured. The drought stress at the maximum growth period negatively affected to the overall growth characteristics of shoot. The response of the growth was small at the middle and the lower leaves, and great at the upper leaves. The relative water content of upper, middle, and lower leaves at the fifth day after treatment were 74, 64, and 59%, respectively, as soil water content was reduced by 4.3%. This suggested that the wilting point of tobacco leaf was about 75%. The leaf water potential was -0.58 MPa in control and dropped to -1.20 MPa at the fifth day after treatment. This indicated that wilting of leaf may occur at the condition in which the difference of water potential between treatment and control, well watered, was greater than about 20%. Stomatal conductance at the fifth day after treatment dropped from 12 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ to 0.8 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ in the middle and the upper leaves. Stomatal conductance of lower leaves already matured were not affected highly by drought stress at the maximum growth period, but maturing leaves, middle and upper leaves, were highly affected by limitation of soil water.

  • This study measures the influence of grass cover on water use and shoot growth of apple trees growing under different soil water regimes in temperate climate conditions and evaluates monthly crop coefficients of such conditions during four months of the growing season in 1995. To do so, double pot lysimeter experiments of 3-year-old Fuji' apple (Males domestica Borkh.) trees under a transparent rain shield were designed and installed. Trees were triplicate under three soil water regimes: (A) drip-irrigation at -50 kPa of soil matric potential (IR50). (B) drip-irrigation at -80 kPa of soil matric potential (IR80), and (C) constant shallow water table at 0.45 m below the soil surface (WT45). In each treatment, two soil surface conditions were tested: the soil surface bare, and covered with turf grasses. Mean monthly water use increased with increasing soil matric potential for drip irrigation and was greatest in the WT45 treatment. Monthly crop coefficients increased linearly in time for drip-irrigated apple trees ($r^2$ values of $0.953^{***}$ for turf grass-covered system and of $0.862^{***}$ for bare surface system), while those obtained in the WT45 treatment fluctuated, Duncan's multiple range tests for shoot growth showed that grass-covered IR50 was most favorable to apple trees. while bare surface waterlogged situation was most adverse at least in part due to a lack of oxygen in the root zone. Mid-season leaf Kjeldahl-N was higher in drip-irrigated apple trees than in WT45 trees, while soil Kjeldahl-N was not different irrespective of treatments.

  • The soil moisture content and its relation to plants may be important in determining the crop growth and yield. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the leaf water potential and photosynthetic activity in soybean plants as affected by the timing of soil water stress. The soybean variety, 'Tachinagaha', was grown in a pot. The 15 day-old seedlings were subject to the three levels of soil moisture content(25, 40 and 55%) for 25 days. Then the treated soybean plants were placed again at the level of 25% soil moisture content for 25 days, and were compared with the control which was well-watered at 40% level for whole growth period. Soybean plants grown under continuous drought showed higher apparent photosynthetic rate(AP) than those under well-watering /drought in the first /second water treatment, suggesting that AP was adjusted after previous acclimation to drought. Over a wide range of photosynthetic photon flux densities(PPFD), drought or excessive water stress resulted in the decrease in AP when compared with the control. AP and stomatal conductance were decreased in soybean plants subject to water deficit stress, suggesting that AP and stomatal conductance were more sensitive to drought than excessive water stress.

  • We developed a mathematical simulation model to portray the vertical distribution of soil water from the measured weather data and the known soil hydraulic properties, and then compared simulation results with the periodically measured soil water profiles obtained on Jungdong sandy loam to verify the model, In this model, we solved potential-based Richards' equation by the implicit finite difference method superimposed on the predictor-corrector scheme. We presumed that: soil hydraulic properties are homogeneous; soil water flows isothermally; hysteresis is not considered; no vapor flows; no heat transfers into the soil profiles; and water added to soil surface is distributed along the soil profile following partial displacement principle. The input data were broadly classified into two groups: (1) daily weather data such as rainfall, maximum and minimum air temperatures, relative humidity and solar radiation and (2) soil hydraulic data to approximate unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention. Each hydraulic polynomial function approximated using the Chebyshev polynomial and least square difference technique in tandem showed a fairly good fit of the given set of data. Vertical distribution of soil water as approximations to the Richards' equation subject to changing surface and phreatic boundaries was solved numerically during 53 days with a comparatively large time increment, and this pattern agreed well with field neutron scattering data, except for the surface 0.1 m slab.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of mulching materials on the emergence rate, root dry weight and grain weight of sesame using variety Poong Nyun Ggae and also their effects on physical properties of soil, evapotranspiration and weed growth on the respective plots were studied. The effect of soil water holding capacity at mulching with polyethylene film and straw increased 5.4%, 2.8% to non-mulched plot respectively. The maximum soil temperature was raised up to 4$^{\circ}C$ by applying clear film and was dropped down to 7$^{\circ}C$ by straw. The minimum soil temperature was raised up to 2$^{\circ}C$ by clear film and was dropped down to 3$^{\circ}C$ by straw. In the early stage, the soil physical properties of clear film mulching were better than those of non mulching, and so was in emergence rate. In the late stage, soil strength was high at non mulching, and soil porosity, soil aeration and water infiltration rate were high at film and straw mulchings. Total root dry weight was great at clear film mulching, and root dry weight was concentrated mainly in the upper 10 cm of soil profile. The amount of weeds collected was the least at black film mulching. There were of little difference in evapotranspiration among treatments. The grain yield of sesame was increased to 57% by polyethylene film and 25% by straw mulching.

  • This study was conducted to investigated effects of water relation of mulching and trickle irrigation on the external and internal fruit quality in Satsuma mandarin grafted on trifoliate orange rootstock in a orchard assigned to randomly three groups; whole period of Tyvex mulching (TM), Tyvex mulching with trickle irrigation once a week from October 22 to harvesting season (WM) and non-mulching treatment (NM). The average soil moisture content in the TM was lower than the WM during the time of trickle irrigation from Oct. 21 to Nov. 28. The leaf water potential was at the level of ${\Psi}max$ of -1.5 to -2.5 MPa during whole period of Tyvex mulching treatment but gradually increased at the point of supplement of water. The water and osmotic potential in juice vesicle was decreased by drought but increased again in response to the supply of water in WM. The total soluble solids (TSS) in fruit juice was increased by drought stress, but diminished in response to supply of water after drought. The content of titratible acidity was increased by drought stress but gradually decreased due to supplement of water after drought, reached it at the level of 1%. It was suggested that the accumulation of the total soluble solids compensates the degree of active osmoregulation and the decrease in content of acidity accounts for the fast respiration and water uptake resulted of the water after drought.

  • In order to elucidate physiological factors involved in causing the winter injuries of evergreen Japanese rhododendron (Rhododendron obtusum cv. Hinodegiri) and semi-evergreen rhododendron (Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense), these studies were conducted from late winter to early spring. The results were summarized as follows; The water potential, water content in stem, water potential and content have continuously increased in both species between February and May. In R. yedoense, shading treatment had 0.3MPa upper water potential and 3% upper water content than the control. Rhododendron obtusum, the treatments with shading had 0.9MPa upper water potential and 11% upper water content that the control. The difference of water balance by treatments could be found in vitality of stem measured by TTC test. Especially R. obtusum in the treatments with shading in has higher vitality than the control. we find that winter damage of evergreen R. obtusum was determined by whether water balance could be recovered from water deficient state during the dehardening period, or not. In order to recover of the water balance, decreasing water loss more important than increasing water supply, and that was effectively acrueved by the treatment with shading.

  • This study was carried out to investigate growth characteristics of woody plants that are widely used indoors in accordance with irrigation frequency and to find the optimum irrigation conditions for plants that help to improve the indoor environment. Four woody plants used in this study included Ardisia pusilla, Clusia rosea, Fatsia japonica, and Ficus elastica. They were planted in pots with a diameter of 10cm and cultivated in three different irrigation frequencies: two times per week, one time per week, and one time per two weeks. After 120 days, they were measured by plant height, fresh weight, dry weight, SPAD value, leaf color, leaf water potential, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), and photosynthetic rate. The average soil moisture content was $48.8{\pm}2.1%$ in two times per week, $25.2{\pm}4.4%$ in one time per week, and $10.3{\pm}2.4%$ in one time per two weeks. For A. pusilla, leaf water potential was higher, and Fv/Fm value was 0.731 in two times per week irrigation, showing more wetness. For A. pusilla, F. japonica and F. elastica photosynthetic rate was significantly lower in one time per two weeks irrigation, appearing to be more sensitive to drying than C. rosea. When irrigated one time per week, with the soil's volume average moisture content of 25%, all four woody plants used in this experiment proved to grow smooth. Thus, it was determined to be good for use in indoor landscaping.
