This study was carried out to investigate the effect of continuous cropping of pepper on soil microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) under upland applied without any pesticides and chemical herbicides from 2000 to 2009. Microbial PLFAs were analysed from soils sampled in 2009. Soil microbial diversities showed PLFAs of monoplanting of pepper were distinct from those of monoplanting of garlic and interplanting of garlic and pepper by principle component 2 (PC2). Furthermore, soil microbial activity of monoplanting of pepper significantly decreased PLFAs representing as VAM-fungi, whereas it significantly increased in actinomycetes and saturated/monounsaturated PLFAs' ratio. The results drove continuous cropping of pepper would vary the microbial community and their specific activity. Soil microbial activities in continuous cropping system would depend on crop root systems.
Soil management for environment-friendly agriculture depends on the effects of soil microbial activities and soil fertility. To improve soil health for the upland crops, this study evaluated a relationship between soil chemical properties and soil microbial diversities at 25 sites in upland soils in Gyeongnam Province. The average nutrients in the upland soils were 1.7 times for available phosphorous, 1.4 times for exchangeable potassium and 1.5 times for exchangeable calcium higher compared to recommend concentrations in the upland soils. We found a significant positive correlation between the soil organic matter and the soil microbial biomass C (p<0.01). Contents of organic matter and dehydrogenase in the inclined piedmont soils were significantly higher than those in the other topographical soils (p<0.05). In addition, concentrations of organic matter and microbial biomass C in the loam soils were significantly higher than in the silt loam soils (p<0.05). In principal component analyses of chemical properties and microbial populations in the upland soils, our findings suggested that available phosphorous should be considered as potential factor responsible for the clear upland soils differentiation. The soil organic matter was positive correlation with Bacillus sp. and fungi, whereas soil pH was also positive correlation with Pseudomonas sp. in upland soils.
This study was conducted to determine the soil chemical properties and microbial flora of platycodon and their effect on rhizome rot incidence. Sampling sites were Keochang 4, Kimhae 7, Haman 6, Chinju 6 and Koseong 3 fields in Kyongnam province and Hongcheong 6 fields in Kangwon province. The root disease incidence rate was in the order of Haman 56.8%, Hongcheon 52.5%, Kimhae 36.7%, Koechang 35.3%, Chinju 32.3%, Koseong 30.0%. The yield at the Chinju 36.17 Mg/ha was higher than that of Koseong 25.00 Mg/ha, Kimhae 13.57 Mg/ha, Koechang 11.75 Mg/ha, Haman 9.50 Mg/ha, Hongcheon 5.24 Mg/ha. The soil K, $NH_4-N$ content and EC value of injury root were higher than those of normal root. The root CaO content was positively correlated with yield $Y=20505X-367.9(R^2=0.129^{\ast})$. The Fe and Zn content of normal root were higher than those of injury root, while the T-N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ content of normal root were lower than those of injury root. The population of bacteria, actinomycetes and bacteria/fungi ratio increased in soil of normal root, but that of fungi decreased.
Soil microbial community and soil physiological parameters were investigated by analyzing phospholipid fatty acids extracted from the soils amended with chitosan powder and solution in a cucumber greenhouse. The soils were sampled at 90, 160, 200 days after treatment. Identified fatty acids were analyzed with principal component (PC) analysis. Chitosan powder soils and chitosan solution soils were separated from non-treated control soils by PC1 and PC2 90 days after treatment, respectively. And chitosan powder soils were separated from non-treated control soils by PC2 160 days after treatment. The ratio of fungi to bacteria increased significantly in chitosan solution-amended soils compared with the control soils 90 days after treatment. Microbial groups and physiological parameters were investigated 160 days after treatment: vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) significantly increased in soils amended with chitosan powder compared with other soils, the ratio of gram negative bacteria to gram positive bacteria and cyclo-fatty acids to precursors were significantly higher and lower in soils amended with chitosan solution and chitosan powder compared with control soils, respectively, and the ratio of fungi to bacteria were significantly lower in control soils compared with chitosan-treated soils. The chitosan powder increased the ratio of aerobic to anaerobic bacteria and lowered the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids compared with chitosan solution 200 days after soil application. In conclusion, chitosan powder changed the soil microbial community and the effects maintained up to 160 days after soil application. The effect of physiological parameters on the soil microbial community started to appear 160 days after and continued up to 200 days after soil application of chitosan.

To know the effect of soil treatment with some microbial materials on growth and yield in Korean ginseng, the investigation was undertaken. Significant increases on growth and yield of Korean ginseng plants were achieved by treating soil with microbial materials. Soil treatment with microbial materials resulted in up to 32-68% increment in fresh weight of roots in a 5 month period. The mechanism by which these microbial materials enhance plant growth and root yield may be associated with changes in the composition of rhizosphere microbial flora.
This study was conducted to investigate the physico-chemical and microbiological properties in profile depth during composting process with different turning times when pig manure was composted with ground rice hulls at the rate of same for the promotion of the composting. The moisture contents, C/N rate and pH value decreased according to composting progresses as run into turning times, but increased those inside layer of the pile. $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ contents were high in the outer layer mostly, as the result the $NH_3$ flux was high in there, but it decreased as composting progresses. The number of aerobic bacteria were $10^7{\sim}10^9\;cfu\;g^{-1}$, increased as the turning times, the number of their showed high in the outer layer. The number of fungi were $10^2{\sim}10^4\;cfu\;g^{-1}$ at the early period of composting, but did't almost survive inside layer as composting progresses. The number of cellulose decomposer and thermophilic bacteria were $10^6{\sim}10^7\;cfu\;g^{-1}$ and $10^6{\sim}10^9\;cfu\;g^{-1}$, respectively, they showed high inside layer of the pile. Therefore, the turning of composting can reduce the change difference of microorganisms in the pile. Turning frequence for the promotion of composting showed approximately 2~3 times.

The objectives of this study was to investigate the difference between organic-farming and conventional-farming soils relatives to soil chemical properties and microbial flora. Fifteen soil sampling sites were chosen from the certified organic upland farm, considered with its location, crop and application of organic compost types. Soil chemical properties were analyzed by standard methods established by National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Rural Development Administration. For the soil chemical properties, the values of pH were ranged from 4.5 to 7.3. The values of electrical conductivity (EC) in the sampling sites were below 2 dS/m of convention cultivation soil. For analyzing the microbial flora, the bacillus(16S rDNA) and cladothricosis(18S rDNA) were analyzed by using PCR-DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis) in the soil of 15 sampling sites. Cluster analysis of biodiversity index was performed by using pattern of DGGE. DGGE patterns and clustering analysis of bacterial DNA from soil extracts revealed that the bacterial community was differentiated between less than 5 years and more than 5 years depending on the cultivation history. But there was no consistent tendency between cultivation history and regional trend in the case of molds. Therefore, it would be very effective to analyze bacterial clusters of organically cultivated soils in long - term cultivated soil for more than 5 years.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of pesticides on soil respiration, microflora and enzymes in loam soil, and on pathogenic microorganisms in continuous pepper cropping soil. The results are summarized as follows. No significant effect of pesticides on soil respiration was shown, with the exception of propoxur which slightly increased at $10{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ treatment. When pesticides were treated, the amount of soil microorganisms generally decreased at the early stage of incubation and the number of microflora was much more decreased at 60-day incubation. When pesticides were treated, the amount of soil enzyme activity was inhibited at the early stage of incubation and gradually recovered at the last stage of incubation. The amount of polygalacturonase activity was increased at the 20-and 30-day incubation in propoxur treatment plot. The amount of ${\beta}$-glucosidase and dehydrogenase activity was increased at 20-and 60-day incubation in carbofuran and acephate treatment plot. The amount of phosphatase activity was increased at 60-day incubation in propoxur and isoprocarb treatment plot. The amount of Fusarium generally decreased in continuous pepper cropping soil, with the exception of isoprocarb and acephate treatment plot which significantly increased. The amount of Pythium increased at 60-day incubation with the exception of captan treatment plot which significantly decreased.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of organic farmland soil and nutrient management on soil properties depending on organic (animal manure compost and green manure [hairy vetch]) and chemical fertilization, tillage and no-tillage, and crop rotation (corn-wheat, corn-.hairy vetch). It was found that the application of organic matter such as animal manure compost and hairy vetch, increased the soil organic matter content, the soil microbial density and microbial biomass C content as compared with the chemical fertilizer treatment. It was also confirmed that the functional diversity of soil microbial community was increased. As a result of the comparison with the crop rotation and single cropping, the soil chemistry showed no significant difference between the treatments, but the corn-wheat and corn-hairy vetch rotation treatments tended to have higher microbial biomass C content and shannon's diversity index than the single cropping. Soil chemical properties of tillage and no-tillage treatments showed no significant difference between treatments. There was no statistically significant difference in substrate utilization of soil microbial community between tillage and no-tillage treatment. Correlation analysis between soil chemical properties and soil microbial activity revealed that soil organic matter content and exchangeable potassium content were positively correlated, with statistical significance, with substrate utilization, and substrate richness. To conclude, organic fertilization had positive effects on the short-term improvement of soil chemical properties and diversity of microbial communities.
