This study was carried out in order to estimate site indices in un-stocked land by the physico-chemical properties of forest soil and to investigate the distribution of the physico-chemical properties by soil horizons. In Larix leptolepis Gordon stand, 80 sites were selected respectively to A and B horizon in soil. About the analysis method of data there was used stepwise regression analysis. Soil pH and T.N. of the physico-chemical properties turned out to be positively related to the site index. However, O.M. and Avail. $P_2O_5$ in soil were found out negatively related. In the degree of contribution of the variables to site index by each one of the stands, the highly effective variables were Base Sat., C.E.C., Sand, Exch. $Ca^{{+}{+}}$, and Exch. $Mg^{{+}{+}}$ in A horizon, Exch. $Ca^{{+}{+}}$, Base Sat., T.N., Avail. $P_2O_5$, and Clay in B horizon, and Exch. $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ and Base Sat. in both of A and B horizon. In conclusion, these results will provide not only the important criteria for establishment of management forest plan in un-stocked land but also the useful guidance for selecting the suitable sites and trees.

Anions such as C $l^{[-10]}$ , N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$, P $O_4$$^{3-}$, and organic anions, that do not become a part of the clay mineral crystal lattice, are of considerable interest in soils which are a potential sink caused by acid rain. In this paper, elution of native sulfate and breakthrough curves (BTC) were obtained from miscible displacement of non-specifically or specifically adsorbed anions through non-saturated or saturated Bt soil of Chungwon series. The shape and position of the BTC's could be affected by adsoprtion and ion exchange onto the soil particle surfaces. Measured BTC's for oxalic acid under unsaturated and saturated conditions showed that less pore volumes were required to displace the native S $O_4$$^{2-}$S from the soil column, and that maximum detection limit of oxalic acid reached earlier than under unsaturated. The retarded BTC's to the righthand side could be attributed by different adsorption behavior of each anion, although BTC's may be influenced by the smaller order of velocity change. The alternate breakthrough and elution curves show the rapid approach to the maximum detection limit of C/Co = 1, compared to progressive tailing of elution curve to reach to C/Co = 0. The probable explanation for asymmetric elution patterns for both anion is that the anion was selectively adsorbed on the positively charged soil surface from the solution passing in the soil column. On the other hand, the variations of pH in effluent showed that pH was increased to 7 in the first 6 pore volume and then gradually decreased to pH 4.
A study was conducted to determine the influence of soil chemical properties on the distribution and forms of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper(Cu) and Zinc(Zn) in paddy soils near zinc mines. A sequential extraction procedure was used to fractionate the heavy metals in soils into the designated from of water soluble, exchangeable, organically bound, oxide/carbonate, and sulfide/residual. The predominant form of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in the soils was found to be sulfide/residual form. Oxide/carbonate Cd and Pb and organically bound Cu were high, while exchangeable Pb and Cu were very low. Water soluble Cd, Pb and Cu were not detected in the soils. The percentages of the heavy metals content in exchangeable fractions were inversely correlated with those in sulfide/residual fractions in the soils. Exchangeable Cd and Zn and the oxide/carbonate Pb were shifting to the sulfide/residual form with soil depth and the chemical forms of Cu were not changed. Organically bound Cu was positively correlated with soil organic matter content but Cd, Pb and Zn were not. The percentages of Cd, Pb and Zn content in exchangeable forms decreased with soil pH, while those in oxide/carbonate and sulfide/residual forms increased with soil pH. The amounts of oxide/carbonate and sulfide/residual forms of pb were higher than those of Cd and Zn at same soil pH.
This survey was conducted to investigate the chemical properties of soils cultivated medicinal plants. The soils were collected at 254 sites(Angelica gigas : 81, Astragalus membranceus : 38, Platycodn glandiflorum : 36, Paeonia albiflora : 34, Codonopsis lanoceolata : 32, Ligusticum chuanxiong : 17. Bupleurum falcatum : 16, respectively) throughout the country by 0-15cm depth. The chemical properties of soils were pH 5.6, O.M 3.0%. Av.$P_2O_5$ : 405 mg/kg, Ex.K : $0.67cmol^+/kg$, Ex.Ca : $6.3cmol^+/kg$, Ex.mg : $1.6cmol^+/kg$. The percentage distribution of pH on the basis of soil sample numbers were much more at the 5.1-6.0 range than any other ranges, especially those of below pH 6.0 were 83-91% for Angelica gigas, Platycodn glandiflorum and Codonopsis lanoceolata. The distribution of OM and Av.$P_2O_5$ in soils were much at the 2.1-4.0% and above 500mg/kg ranges, respectively. And the content of those in soils cultivated with Platycodn glandiflorum were lower than any other medicinal plants. The distribution of exchangeable cations in soils were much at the 0.2-0.8, 2.1-4.0 and $0.5-2.0cmol^+/kg$ of Ex.K. Ca and mg. respectively, and the contents were higher in soils cultivated Astragalus membranceus. and lower in soils cultivated Platycodn glandiflorum and Codonopsis lanoceolata than any other samples.
These studies were aimed to find out the representative values of physico-chemical properties in Korean soils and to serve the basic informations to improve the soil properties for increasing the soil productivity. By the results of detailed soil survey, 14 physico-chemical properties (soil texture, moisture characteristics, organic matter content etc) were collected from 315 series of soils except Cheju soils, computerized the simple mean and the distributed area by weighted mean values with grouping of land use, drainage class and soil type. The results were as follows; 1. Simple mean values within the efficient soil depth in whole country soils were clay 20.0%, organic matter 2.03% and CEC 10.3me/100g. But weighted mean values with land area belonged to the same soil series were clay 18.0%, OM 1.85% and CEC 8.6me/100g. 2. Mean values of paddy soils weighted by area were clay 19.7%, OM 2.0% and CEC 9.1me/100g but those of upland soils were 17.9%, 1.8% and 8.1me/100g and forest soils were 16.7%, 1.8% and 8.6me/100g respectively. 3. Weighted mean values of moderately well soils with covered area were clay 18.9%, organic matter 1.7%, CEC 8.4me/100g but those of imperfectly drained soils were 21.3%, 2.2% and 9.5me/100g, and those of poorly drained soils were 15.1%, 1.8% and 9.9me/100g respectivcly. 4. Simple mean and area weighted mean values of clay content, pH, organic matter contents, cation exchange capacity and base saturation were calculated by the types of paddy and upland.
Monitoring of the dynamic changes at paddy rice agriculture is very important for agricultural sustainability. Field monitoring was performed to evaluate the soil chemical properties of 260 paddy soil samples every four years from 1999 to 2007 in Gyeongnam Province. Soil chemical properties such as pH, organic matter, available phosphate, silicate, exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium contents were analyzed. The contents of exchangeable cations, and available silicate were significantly increased in 2007 compared to 1999. The chemical contents of organic matter, exchangeable potassium, and magnesium were significantly increased in acid sulfate soil, and silty clay loam compared to those of other soil types, and textures. Especially, content of organic matter was significantly increased in hill area compared to other soil topographies, while exchangeable potassium was significantly decreased. Principle component analysis (PCA) of chemical properties in paddy soils was obtained with eigenvalues > 1 summing 39.1%of variance for PC1, 20.4%of variance for PC2, and 59.5%of the total variance in the all of soil chemical properties. Therefore, principal component analysis is more effective for monitoring from chemical properties of paddy soil.
This study was conducted to investigate the relations between soil chemical properties and Korean raspberry (Rubus coreanus Miq.) growth. Soils were collected from 54 sampling sites in 1 to 6 years old Korean raspberry cultivation fields (RCFs) at Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-Do, Korea. In RCF with two to six years old plants, soil pH and exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ contents were higher at the leaf-emergence time, but EC, available phosphorus content, CEC, and total nitrogen content were higher at the harvesting time; especially at the harvesting time, the content of available phosphorus in the RCF with 3~6 years old plants were at least three times higher than in the RCF with 2 years old plants. Water-soluble anions ($Cl^-$, ${NO_3}^-$, ${PO_4}^{2-}$, and ${SO_4}^{2-}$) in the RCF were also measured. The contents of ${NO_3}^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ were always higher in the RCF with older plants than in the RCF with younger plants, which were not affected by sampling time and sampling locations (rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere sites). However, soils collected from non-rhizosphere at the leaf-emergence time contained higher ${PO_4}^{2-}$ content, but $Cl^-$ content was higher in the soils collected from rhizosphere at the harvesting time. In general, soils in the RCFs contained excess amounts of inorganic nutrients such as available phosphorus and exchangeable $K^+$. Thus, optimal levels of soil properties for Korean raspberry cultivation should be reconsidered.
Electric charge characteristics of volcanic ash soils in Cheju Island were investigated. For this study, soils of toposequence distributed along the sourthern slope of Mt. Halla, and the major soil groups such as dark brown soils, very dark brown soils, black soils, and brown forest soils were collected and analyzed for extratable acidity, KCl ext. Al, CEC, base saturation, permanent charge and variable charge, etc.. Weolpyeong and Yongheung soils developed on the lower elevations have high $NH_4OAc$ ext. bases, permanent charge and base saturation, and relatively low ext. acidity, CEC and variable charge. For other soils, whose colloidal fractions are dominated by allophane or Al-humus complexes, ext. acidity, CEC, variable charge, and variable charge ratio were very high, and $NH_4OAc$ ext. bases, permanent charge, and base saturation were very low. These trends were especially prominant in the surface. horizons of black soils and brown forest soils dominated by Al-humus complexes. Ext. acidity, CEC($NH_4OAc$), CEC(sum of cations), and variable charge strongly correlated with pyrophosphate ext. carbon. Very dark brown soils and cinder cone soils dominated by allophane showed low KCl ext. Al and relatively high pH, despite their very low base saturation.
Effects of lime and ameliolating materials on decreasing available soil cadmium were studied, applying the amendments to Cd pre-and post-treated soils. Soil sttreated with Cd were placed in pots and kept under field moisture condition, summer through winter in 1981. The results of soil analysis made 40 to 60 days after the Cd treatment are as follows ; 1. Greater amount of Cd was extracted by 0.1N-HCl or 2% Citric acid than N-AcNH4 solution. More Cd was dissoluted by 0.1-HCl than 2% Citric acid. No Cd was extracted by pure water. Showing a wide variance in the amount of extractable Cd among treatments (amendments), the $N-AcNH_4$ solution seemed to be the most effective extracting solution of available soil cadmium. 2. Calcium hydroxide was the most effective materials in reducing $N-AcNH_4$ extractable Cd, followed by calcium carbonate and calcium silicate. 3. Superphosphate is also effective in reducing exchangeable cadmium. The reduction seemed to be attributed to the precipitation of cadmium phosphate. 4. The exchangeable cadmium by $N-AcNH_4$ was large in the soil pH range of 6.0 and 6.5, and it decreased as the soil pH became far apart from these values. The decrese of exchangeable Cd at low pH seemed to be related to the increase of $Mn^{+{+}}$ and that at the high pH to the precipitation as Cd-hydroxide.
Various methods for measuring cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soil were compared and the contributions of ionic strength, pH and replacing cations to the CEC were investigated on Kangweon soils (Pyeongchang soils derived from lime stone : Chuncheon, Weonseong soils from alluvium : Cheolweon soils from basalt). The results were as follows : 1. The CEC measuring method using shaker and centrifuge at saturating, washing and replacing precesses, which are common in determining CEC of soils, appeared to be superior to the other methods using column, filter, or Brown method. 2. For all soil samples, the higher the ionic strength, the higher CEC value was obtained with the fewer saturating processes. However, using monovalent saturating ion on Anmi series soil derived from lime stone, the CEC value decreased when the ionic strength and the number of saturating process increased. 3. The CEC value generally increased with increasing pH. But, Chuncheon soil (Gyuam series from alluvium) having higher Al content showed the abrupt increases of CEC from pH 5.5 to pH 7.5. 4. About 70% of CEC of Kangweon soils were attributed to organic matter. 5. In determining CEC of soils, saturating with 0.5M divalent cation solution 2 to 3 times for Pyeongchang and Weonseong soil, 3 to 4 times for Cheolweon soil, and replacing with 0.25M divalent cation solution about 3 times are thought to be recommendable.
