Cheyletiellosis is a very common infestation in pet rabbits that causes dermatosis with pruritus and scale. In this study, thirty two rabbits with cheyletiellosis were treated with a single dermal application of a formulation containing imidacloprid 10% (w/v) and moxidectin 1% (w/v) at a dose 0.4 ml. The therapeutic effects of the formulation were 100% at 4, 8 and 12 weeks without adverse reactions. This suggests that a formulation containing imidacloprid and moxidectin is an effective treatment for cheyletiellosis in rabbits.
Seasonal distribution of chigger mites in the Kangwha Island and Yongjong Island was studied during the period of October 1992-August 1993. From 42 field rodents collected, 1,290 chiggers were obtained and 8 species of 4 genera were identified. In the Kanghwa Island, Leptopombidium pallidum was the predominant species through all seasons with the percentage of 93.0%. Whereas, In the Yongjong Island, L. palpale was the predominant species with the percentage of 38.4% and L. pnllidum was not found.

The purpose of this study is to discover a food material having anti-obesity effects and to disseminate information on the effects of the material to people who are interested in anti-obesity. For this study, 11 kinds of Auricularia (wood ear) spp., including 8 strains of Auricularia auricula-polytricha, and 3 strains of A. auricula-judae, were presented by the Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research & Extension Services. 3T3-L1 (preadipocyte cell) was used for identifying the inhibition effect on adipocyte differentiation. As a result, this study found that all the extracts had slightly different degrees of inhibition effects on adipocyte differentiation. Among the A. auricula-polytricha strains, strain 21001 showed the most significant effect (4.58%), and the inhibition effect of strain 21002 (4.43%) was the greatest among A. auricula-judae strains. Overall, the inhibition effect of A. auricula-polytricha strains was greater than that of A. auricula-judae strains. The results of mRNA and protein analysis also demonstrated that the inhibition effect of A. auricula-polytricha 21001 was superior to that of any other strains. An in vivo study using 56 ICR mice (6w, male), was performed for 4 weeks. A. auricula-polytricha 21001, which exhibited the most significant effect in the in vitro study was used to compose six different types of feeds. Daily body weight gain of the high-fat diet containing 0.2% 21001 extract feeding group was $0.22{\pm}0.08g$ (*p < 0.05), and it was 31.25% lower than that of the high-fat diet feeding group ($0.32{\pm}0.06$). Internal organ weight measurement and blood analysis were performed immediately after animal sacrifice. The results proved that treatment with more than 0.1% of A. auricula-polytricha strain 21001 could significantly reduce (more than *p < 0.05) the weight of liver and epididymal fat, and levels of glucose, total cholesterol, AST, and ALT in blood.
Because no reference on trombiculid mites (Acarina: Trombiculidae) in Cheju Island where tsutsugamushi disease is highly endemic had been available, studies on trombiculid mites in Cheju Island were implemented during the period of August 1991-Apil 1992, and the results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) The species and numbers of the field rodents collected were 143 Apodemus agrarius chejuensis (92.3%), 11 Crocidura lasiura (7. l%) and 1 Micromys minutus (0.6%) From total 12,075 chiggers harvested, 9 species of 4 genera in Trombiculidae were identified. (2) The predominant species through all seasons was 1. setum (43.3%), followed by 1. orientale (27.4%) and 1. scutellare (26.6%). However, in autumn when the most cases of tsutsugamushi disease occur, 1. scutellere was prominently predominant, having 79.8% of the collected chiggers. (3) Among 1,1421. scutellare examined for Rickettsia tsutsugpmushi by means of IFA test, 6 individuals were found positive showing 0.5% of infection rate. This is the first finding that 1. scutellere is the second vector species of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea. (4) Antibody positive rate of A. agrarius chejuensis sera were 31.2% (44/139), and 1 M. minutes serum was also found positive. The seropositive rates by season were not so significantly different. Key words: Tsutsugamushi disease, epidemiology, vector species, Cheju Island, Korea.
During October-December 1987, chigger mites infested on the striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius cereae) collected at Pochun-gun, Gyeonggi Province and Chinhae city, Kyongnam Province were identified. . 1. Of 171 back-striped mice collected, chigger mites wire found from 58 mice, showing 33.9% of infestation rate. 2. Total 865 chigger mites collected were classified into seven species; Leptotrombidium pallidum (4.3%), L. palpate(23.0%), L. orienpalis(20.2%), L. xetum(19.0%), Neotrombicula tamiyai(32.9%), JV. japonica(0.25%) and Euschongastia koreaensis(0.3%). Though the most dominant species in number was N. tamiyai(32.9% of the total), this species was collected at very limited locality and for a short period. Therefore, most common species in Korea seems to be L. palpale which was found at all localities throughout the whole survey period. L. pallidum which is known as the vector species of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea was collected in a very low number(4.3% of the total chiggers collected). 3. The number of chigger mites infested on a host animal showed great variations from one chigger up to 207 chiggers. The present study has shown that there may be other Leptotrombidium species mite(s) for the vector and host of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea.
We observed that the thick outer bark layer of Quercus variabilis hindered oak longicorn beetle (Moechotypa diphysis) from laying its eggs in inner bark (secondary phloem tissues). The outer bark thickness of Q. variabilis was average of 7.4mm, while those of Q. mongolica. Q. serrata and Q. acutissima were average of 1.1mm, 1.3mm and 2.0mm, respectively. Inner bark thickness was 4.8mm in Q. acutissima and 3.6-3.9mm in the other oak species. The outer shape of ovipositional holes on the bark by the longicorn beetle was $8-12mm{\times}6-8mm$ wide oval in Q. variabilis, whereas $5-9mm{\times}1-5mm$ narrow fusiform in the other oak species. Oak longicorn beetle drilled average of three ovipositional holes per a 1.2m-long log in a few Q. variabilis logs and its ovipositional rate was 15%. Compared to this, the longicorn beetle preferred Q. mongolica. All the 32 investigated logs of this oak species were drilled to have 20 ovipositional holes per a log and ovipositional rate was 56%. One third of the eggs laid already hatched in early June to damage the inner bark. It seems that oak longicorn beetle prefers oak species with smooth, thin and stable outer bark surface.
1) Optimum temperature was $15^{\circ}C$ for C. bursa-pastoris, $20^{\circ}C$ for C. album, $30^{\circ}C$ for P. oleracea, A. lividus, E. crus-galli, D. sanguinalis, and 4 showed wide range of germination temperature. 2) Emergence of C. bursa-pastoris, and C. album was best at $14.8^{\circ}C$ of soil temperature, E. crus-galli at $23^{\circ}C$, E. indica, A. lividis and P. oleracea at $27.1^{\circ}C$ and A. retroflexus and D. sanguinalis at $31.1^{\circ}C$. 3) A. retroflexus and P. oleracea started to germinate at 30% water absorption stage and A. lividus, C. album, S. viridis, and D. sanguinalis at 40% and E. indica at 70%. 4) Germination of weed species was decreased as PEG 6000 induced osmotic potential lowered. C. album, P. oleracea, D. sanguinalis, A. lividus, and Solanum nigrum were germinated at -5.0 bar osmotic potential and C. album and P. oleracea were germinated at -7.0 bar.
BACKGROUND: This research has investigated the residue patterns of insecticide flubendiamide on three species of peaches with different surface forms, and the residue amounts of them when mixed with a spreader. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pesticide used for field application on peaches was 20% flubendiamide of suspension concentrate(SC) and was sprayed at a recommended rate. The residue amounts of flubendiamide in peach were analyzed by HPLC equipped with UV detector. After the observation with a microscope, the rank of fuzz amount on peach's surface was Kurakatawase, Wolmi in descending order and Cheonhong did not have any fuzz. The residue amounts of flubendiamide were 0.54 mg/kg for Kurakatawase, 0.43 mg/kg for Wolmi and 0.10 mg/kg for Cheonhong, respectively. When flubendiamide was used with a spreader, polyoxy ethylene methylpoly siloxane, the residue amount for Kurakatawase barely changed at 0.55 mg/kg regardless of mixing with a spreader, and at 0.53 mg/kg for Wolmi. In Cheonhong, the residue amount was 0.48 mg/kg, which increased by 4.8 times due to the use of a spreader. CONCLUSION: This result indicates that the residue amounts of flubendiamde were affected by the surface forms of peaches, and in the presence of a spreader the residue amount did not increase in fuzzy species, but was affected greatly for species without fuzz.
To develop universal primers for phylogenetic analysis and species-specific marker for breeding program of kiwifruit, eighteens primers were designed from kiwifruit genome-specific repeat sequences. Seven species including twenty two varieties collected from native eastern Asia were examined using 18 to 22 mer kiwifruit target(KT) primers. among eighteen primers, we selected seven primers for phylogenetic relationship. The genus Actinidia was divided into two large groups; group I,A. arguta, A. melanandra, A. kolomikta, and A. marcrosperma, characterized by the non-hair in fruits and loaves or a few pubescences only in young stage, which belongs to the section Leiocarpae, and group II, A. chinensis, A. deliciosa, and A. eriantha, characterized by a lot of hairs only in young fruit stage and with a lot of hairs or fuzzes in leaves and branches, which belongs to the section Stellatae. Group II especially belongs to the series Perfectae of the section Stellatae and was divided into two subgroups; subgroup I containing A. chinensis and A. deliciosa, and subgroup II containing A. eriantha. In contrast, the two species, A. chinensis and A. deliciosa, which are known to have common parents, were divided into two independent subgroups with 80% of a similarity value. On the other hand, we selected KT6F for variety specific bands, KT12E primers for 'Hayward' and 'Tomuri'. KT7F or KT12F primers were useful for analysis of inheritance pattern in kiwifruit cross-breeding. We suggest that these primers will be a powerful tool for elucidating phylogenetic relationship and selection of novelty kiwifruit in a breeding program.
To explore on the defense strategies against hervivory of Juglans regia and J. mandshurica, morphological characteristics of the leaf, leaf domatia structure and the number, herbivores insects and mites on the leaves, collected from the trees growing in Mt. Chiak, Mt. Cheongtae, Mt. Jungwang, Namyangju-si and Wonju-si, were investigated from May to October, 2009. Domatia of J. mandshurica revealed tuft type, these of J. regia revealed pocket+tuft type. Domatia number per leaflet proved the higher figures, 28.3/leaflet for J. mandshurica, and the lower, 19.6/leaflet for J. regia. Leaf surface trichomes of J. regia revealed stellates only on the domatia structures, and that of J. mandshurica does dense stellates and glandular hairs on the leaf-blade and vein. Predatory mites' number per leaflet proved highly significant differences among tree species, and mean of predatory mites was higher values (4.8/leaflet) in J. mandshurica and lower values (3.5/leaflet) in J. regia. Small amount of nectar are found distal veinparts on the leaf margin of J. mandshurica. Dense glandular hairs on the lower leaf surfaces of J. mandshurica estimates useful strategy against herbivory. It may be possible to breed J. regia for better expression of leaf traits such as dense glandular hairs that increase predator populations and efficacy.
