Operating Characteristics of 5MW Class Gas Turbine Engine for Power Generation (5MW급 발전용 가스터빈 엔진의 작동 특성)

  • Operating characteristics of DGT-5 being developed by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. for power generation service was evaluated. Starting behavior was improved by a series of tests to investigate the effect of various fuel schedule and several combination of bleed valve control. The engine showed stable operation without any instability of compressor in the full operating regime covering from start-up to load conditions. If there is a rapid change of load in the condition of synchronization to Grid, the engine can be controlled stably based on the analysis of dynamic responses of the engine to an rapid load change and a sudden load rejection.

  • For a short time a pyre-starter should turn the blades of a turbine to the adequate rotational speed by a single operation. Through this process the pressures of the components of a propellant rise rapidly up to the operating point, and the components enter into a gas-generator. Combustion in the gas-generator occurs to keep the turbopumps working.   • This paper presents the simulator for dynamic modeling of a MT(micro turbine) during start-up period. The simulator is implemented by modeling a dynamic power of main components of a MT including compressor, combustor and turbine. A modeling for a MT under steady state operation can be accurately built from thermodynamics analysis. But dynamic modeling during start-up period is very difficult because efficiency of main components is very low and the designed value has big error and nonlinear characteristics during start-up. In this paper, new method without using thermodynamics analysis during start-up is proposed for the simulator. The power models of main components are derived from analysis of the experimental operation data by test motoring using a electric starter under constant power output. The simulator is developed using MATLAB/Simulink. For constant power output control, sensorless vector inverter is designed and algorithms for starting from stall and method for controling a output power are proposed. The performance of developed simulator is verified by comparing experimental and simulation start-up results.

Surface Gas Temperature of Turbine Blade by Hot Gas Stream of Pyro Starter in Operation Condition (파이로 시동기의 고온 가스에 의한 터빈 블레이드의 표면 가스온도 발달과정 해석)

  • The high pressure turbopump carries out supplying the oxidizer in the liquid propulsion rocket in the combustion chamber. Because an LRE requires a very short starting time , the turbine at the turbopump experiences high torque that was produced by the high pressure and the high temperature. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a turbine blade surface temperature profiles at initial starting 0 ${\sim}$ 0.5 sec. Using $Fine^{Tm}$/turbo, three dimensional Baldwin-Lomax turbulence models are used for numerically analysis. The turbine is composed of 108 blades total, but only 7 rotors were considered because of periodic symmetry effect. Because of interaction with a bow shock on the suction surface, the boundary layer separates from suction surface at inner area of turbine blade. The averaged temperature of the turbine blade tip at 1000 rpm is higher than that of 9000 rpm. Especially at 1000 ${\sim}$ 9000 rpm, temperatures increases on the hub side of the turbine blade tip. Moreover at 9000 rpm, the temperatures from the hub to the shroud of the blade tip increase as well.

  • APU for aircraft is operated under severe condition as high altitude and low temperature, and demand high reliability in flight. This study is to be verified of the ignition and the combustion stability of APU under the harsh conditions. The basic data obtained in combustion rig test were directly applied to the altitude test with a engine. That start logic was obtained in ground development test. The results of altitude test show that air swirl injector has good operation and ignition performance at 20kft, hot/cold($-40^{\circ}C$) day.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the turbine performance of a turbopump in the third stage engine of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II. The turbine is a supersonic impulse type with a single rotor. One nozzle is for starting and four remaining nozzles are for steady operation. A similarity test was carried out in the high air test facilities at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Test results showed that turbine efficiency changed much more from rotational speed variations than by pressure ratio variations. These results showed characteristics similar to other supersonic impulse turbines.

The performance effect of shroud split for turbopump turbine rotor (터보펌프 터빈 로터의 슈라우드 스플릿이 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • A blisk with rotor shroud is usually adopted in LRE turbine to maximize its performance. However it experiences severe thermal load and resulting damage during engine stating and stop. Shroud splitting is devised to relieve thermal stress on the turbine rotor. Structural analysis confirmed the reduction of plastic strain at the blade hub and tip. However, split gap at the rotor shroud entails additional tip leakage and results performance degradation. In order to assess the effect of shroud split on the turbine performance, tests have been performed for various settings of shroud split. For the maximum number of shroud splitting, measured efficiency reduction ratio was 2.65% to the value of original shape rotor.

  • 연구소기내에서 원활한 연소를 위하여 액체의 균일하고 완전한 미소분열 문제는 매우 중요한 연구분야라 할 수 있으며, 특히 항공기용 가스터빈 연소기에 사용되는 분사 시스템의 설계시에는 단순한 미소분열 문제뿐 아니라 시동성 향상, 화염의 안정화, 공해물질의 저감 등은 물론 압력 차가 작고 유량범위가 넓으며 공기를 이용한 미립화(Atomization)의 효율이 낮은 영역, 즉, 시동(Start-up) 및 플레임 아웃(Flame-out)근처의 영역에서도 효율적인 미립화가 이루어지도록 고려되어져야 한다.

  • A pyrostarter is a sort of gas generator, which supplies the energy to drive turbines by the combustion gas of a solid propellant charged internally. The igniter of the pyrostarter should guarantee the ignition reliability expecially for the solid propellant with a low fame temperature. For the development of the igniter, several closed bomb testes have been performed to decide several design parameters to get a sufficient chamber pressure build-up for the ignition. Moreover, as a result of the firing testes with pyrostarters, the ignition reliability have been verified and the amount of igniter propellants has been reviewed.
