  • The turbine exhaust system consists of a turbine flange, heat exchanger, exhaust duct and thrust nozzle. Heat exchanger is used for the launch vehicle because of the advantage of reducing the weight of the helium gas and the storage tank by using the heat exchanger pressurization method compared to the cold gas pressurizing method. Since the gas generator is combusted in fuel-rich condition, the soot is contained in the combustion gas. Hence, the heat exchanger should be designed considering the reduction of the heat exchange efficiency due to the soot effect. In addition, the uncertainty of the heat exchange calculation and the evaluation of the influence of the combustion gas soot on the heat exchange can not be completely calculated, so the design requirements must include a structure that can guarantee and control the temperature of the heat exchanger outlet. In this paper, it is described that the component allocation, the design method considering the manufacture of internal structure, the advantages of new concept of nozzle design.

Analysis of Helical Turbine Characteristics for Tidal Current Power Plant (조류발전용 헬리컬 터빈의 특성치 분석)

  • The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides results in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by use of tidal current turbines. This paper investigates the characteristics of helical turbine based on in-field test. The experimental frame was constructed at the Uldolmok narrow channel between Jindo and Haenam and installed the helical turbine of diameter 2.2 m and height 2.5 m. 3-blade turbine had the maximum efficiencies of about 30% in the current velocity range between 1.5 and 2.3 m/s and 6-blade turbine han the maximum efficiencies of about 25%. The efficiency was constant with the current velocity. TSRs of 3-blade and 6 blade turbines were observed as 2.4 and 1.9 respectively.

Turbine Rotor-Pyrostarter Coupled Test for the Verification of Thermo-Structural Suitability of a Turbopump Turbine (터보펌프 터빈의 열구조적 적합성 검증을 위한 터빈로터-파이로시동기 연계시험)

  • Turbine rotor-pyrostarter coupled test was performed for the verification of thermo-structural suitability of a turbopump turbine. Newly developed solid propellant and design concept were used in pyrostarter development. In case of turbine rotor, rotor configuration modification and post EDM machining process are adopted in rotor manufacturing respectively for the thermal stress relief and the surface integrity improvement on the blade surfaces. In the test, combustion gas of pyrostarter was directly ejected from the nozzles and impinged on the stationary turbine rotor specimen through the identically shaped flow passage of turbopump. Three kind of thermal load - design to extreme condition - test were performed and no damages were found on the turbine rotor specimens.

Study on Performance Variation According to the Arrangements of Adjacent Vertical-Axis Turbines for Tidal Current Energy Conversion (인접한 조류발전용 수직축 터빈의 배치방식에 따른 성능 변화)

  • Tidal farm is a multi-arrayed turbine system for utilizing tidal stream energy. For horizontal-axis turbine(HAT) system, it is recommended that each unit has to be deployed far apart in order to avoid hydrodynamic interference among turbines, as proposed by the European Marine Energy Centre(EMEC). But there is no rule for the arrangement of vertical-axis turbine(VAT) yet. Moreover it has been reported that a proper arrangement of adjacent turbines can enhance the overall efficiency even greater than an arrangement without mutual interference effect. This paper suggests the layout of VATs showing the better performances, which turned out to be quite different from HATs' arrangement. Numerical calculations were performed to investigate the performance variation in terms of the rotational direction as well as the distance between turbines. It has been shown that the best combination of rotational direction and distance between turbines can increase its performance higher about 9.2% than that of two independently operated turbines. It is likely that such improvement is due to the increased velocity between adjacent turbines. For diagonally arranged turbines, the maximum normalized mean power coefficient was obtained to be higher about 5.6% than that of two independent turbines. It is expected that the present results can be utilized for conceptual design of tidal farm to harness the tidal stream energy.

  • The performance of fuel cell/gas turbine hybrid systems is highly affected by system configuration. In this study, the performance of a hybrid system combining a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) and an indirectly fired gas turbine was predicted. Firstly, general performance trends of the hybrid system depending on major design parameters were examined. Then, the most feasible design options with the least impact on the MCFC stack design conditions were drawn. The economic advantage of the hybrid system over the basic MCFC only system was evaluated.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the turbine performance of a turbopump in the third stage engine of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II. The turbine is a supersonic impulse type with a single rotor. One nozzle is for starting and four remaining nozzles are for steady operation. A similarity test was carried out in the high air test facilities at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Test results showed that turbine efficiency changed much more from rotational speed variations than by pressure ratio variations. These results showed characteristics similar to other supersonic impulse turbines.

  • Pressurized fluidized bed combustion unit is operated at pressures of 1~1.5 MPa with combustion temperatures of 850~87$0^{\circ}C$. The pressurized coal combustion system heats steam, in conventional heat transfer tubing, and produces a hot gas supplied to a gas turbine. Gas cleaning is a vital aspect of the system, as is the ability of the turbine to cope with some residual solids. The need to pressurize the feed coal, limestone and combustion air, and to depressurize the flue gases and the ash removal system introduces some significant operating complications. The proportion of power coming from the steam : gas turbines is approximately 80:20%. Pressurized fluidized bed combustion and generation by the combined cycle route involves unique control considerations, as the combustor and gas turbine have to be properly matched through the whole operating range. The gas turbines are rather special, in that the maximum gas temperature available from the FBC is limited by ash fusion characteristics. As no ash softening should take place, the maximum gas temperature is around 90$0^{\circ}C$. As a result a high pressure ratio gas turbine with compression intercooling is used. This is to offset the effects of the relatively low temperature at the turbine inlet.

비활성 가스제너레이터 성능분석

  • 비활성 가스제너레이터는 가스터빈 추진기관 및 기타 열기관을 이용하여 연소가 되지 않는 저온의 공기를 생산하는 기계장치를 말하며 이러한 저온의 비활성 기체를 화재 지역에 분사하는 경우 기존의 소방수를 이용한 화재 진압방식보다 매우 효율적으로 화재진압에 사용되어 질 수 있다. 일반적으로 민항기 등의 가스터빈 추진 기관에서 배기되는 기체내에는 터빈입구온도(TIT : Turbine Inlet Temperature)및 초과공기지수(Excess Air Coefficient)에 따라 다르게 나타나지만 TIT가 1500$^{\circ}$K인 경우 약 13-14%정도의 산소가 잔존하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 가스터빈 및 열교환 시스템 그리고 터빈 1단 등의 시스템 조합율을 통하여 대기 중의 기체의 온도를 영하 2$0^{\circ}C$ 및 산소함유량을 약 5%수준까지 낮춤으로서 이를 대형 화재 진압에 사용하기 위한 연구이다. 비활성 가스제너레이터에 사용하는 연료로는 Kerosene 및 CNG(Compressed Natural Gas)등이 사용될 수 있으며, 유량이 8.1kg/sec인 터보축 가스터빈 엔진을 사용하는 경우 18750㎥ 부피의 비활성기체를 생산하는데 Kerosene 연료가 약 1톤(200$ 이하)이 필요한 것으로 계산되며 이에 소요되는 시간도 약 52분에 지나지 않는 것으로 계산되었다. 만일 50kg/sec의 보다 큰 가스터빈 엔진을 사용하는 경우 약 9분 정도가 필요한 것으로 계산되었다. 사용되는 가스터빈은 압축비가 15, 열교환기의 효율이 $\varepsilon$=0. 그리고 최종 터빈 1단의 팽창비가 1.25가 적합한 것으로 계산된다. 연구 분석 결과 기술적 문제점으로는 배기 가스온도가 낮은데 따른 출구 부분의 Bearing, Sealing이 문제가 될 수 있다고 판단되며 배기 가스 자체에 대기 공기중에 함유되어 있던 습기가 얼어붙는(Icing화) 문제가 발생하기 때문에 배기가스의 Icing을 방지하기 위하여 압축기 끝단에서 공기를 추출하여 배기부분에 송출할 필요성이 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 출구가스의 기체 유동속도가 매우 빠르므로 (100-l10m.sec) 이를 완화하기 위한 디퓨저의 설계가 요구된다고 판단된다. 또 연소기 후방에 물을 주입하는 경우 열교환기 및 기타 부분품에 발생할 수 있는 부식 및 열교환 효율 저하도 간과할 수 없는 문제로 파악되었다. 이러한 기술적 문제가 적절히 해결되는 경우 비활성 가스 제너레이터는 민수용으로는 대형 빌딩, 산림, 유조선 등의 화재에 매우 적절히 사용되어 질 수 있을 뿐 아니라 군사적으로도 군사작전 중 및 공군 기지의 화재 그리고 지하벙커에 설치되어 있는 고급 첨단 군사 장비 등의 화재 뿐 아니라 대간첩작전 등에 효과적으로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Distribution Feeder Aspects of a Variable Speed Wind Turbine in Voltage Fluctuations and Harmonics (가변속 풍력터빈이 연계된 배전선로의 전압변동 및 고조파 영향)

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present a simulation model for assessing the impacts of a variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) on the distribution network and perform a simulation analysis of volt-age profiles and harmonics along the wind turbine installed feeder using the presented model. The modeled wind energy conversion system consists of a fixed pitch wind turbine and a permanent-magnet synchronous generator, in which a controllable power electronics inverter performs variable speed operation and reactive power output control. Impact analysis on voltage profiles and harmonics of a VSWT-installed distribution feeder is addressed and simulated in terms of steady state and dynamic behaviors. Various capacities and different modes of variable speed wind turbines are simulated and investigated. Case studies demonstrate how feeder voltages are influenced by capacity and control modes of wind turbines and changes in wind speed under various network conditions, and show harmonic impacts on the feeder. Modeling and simulation analysis is based on PSCAD/EMTDC a software package.

Study on Fuel Lubrication Performance of a High Speed Rolling Element Bearing (소형 고속 구름베어링의 연료윤활 특성 연구)

  • A parametric study was carried out to find the fuel lubrication performance of high speed small rolling element bearings. Both MIL-PRF-7808 turbine oil and JP-8 aircraft fuel were used as the lubricant to compare the operational characteristics. 17 mm inner diameter deep groove ball bearing and 20 mm cylindrical roller bearing were used. A high speed bearing test rig was developed and the testing was done with varying applied load, cooling air temperature, lubricant flow rate, and speed. Fuel caused more cage wear than oil for ball bearing with increasing axial load and rotational speed. The bearing temperature using fuel was lower than that using oil, and this seems to be the result of the high cooling capacity of fuel. According to various tests, the fuel lubrication is applicable for the lubrication on the main shaft bearings of expendable small gas turbines.
