  • In this paper, We analyzed the performance of turbo equalizer using turbo codes thorough the under water experiment. To compensate the distorted signal induced by multipath effect, we apply the iterative turbo codes that iteratively exchange probabilistic information between LMS-DFE and turbo decoder, thereby reducing the error rates significantly. We showed the successful of turbo decoding of iterative turbo equalizer is 93%.

  • This paper analyzed performance of three dimensional turbo code and turbo ${\Phi}$ codes proposed in the next generation DVB-RCS systems. In the view of turbo ${\Phi}$ codes, we proposed the optimal permutation and puncturing patterns for triple binary input data. We also proposed optimal post-encoder types and interleaving algorithm for three dimensional turbo codes. Based on optimal parameters, we simulated both turbo codes, and we confirmed that the performance of turbo ${\Phi}$ codes are better than that of three dimensional turbo codes. However, the complexity of turbo ${\Phi}$ is more complex than that of three dimensional turbo codes by 18%.

  • This paper presents generalization and application for the conventional SISO decoding algorithm of Block Turbo Codes. R. M. Pyndiah suggested an iterative SISO decoding algorithm for Product Codes, two-dimensionally combined linear block codes, on AWGN channel. It wascalled Block Turbo Codes. Based on decision of Chase algorithm which is SIHO decoding method, SISO decoder for BTC computes soft decision information and transfers the information to next decoder for iterative decoding. Block Turbo Codes show Shannon limit approaching performance with a little iteration at high code rate on AWGN channel. In this paper we generalize the conventional decoding algorithm of Block Turbo Codes, under BPSK modulation and AWGN channel transmission assumption, to the LLR value based algorithm and suggest an application example such as concatenated structure of LDPC codes and Block Turbo Codes.

  • The performance of underwater acoustic communication systems is sensitive to inter-symbol interference caused by delay spread developed from multipath signal propagation. The multipath nature of underwater channels causes signal distortion and error floor. In order to improve the performance, it is necessary to employ an iterative coding scheme. Of the various iterative coding schemes, turbo code and convolutional code based on the BCJR algorithm have recently dominated this application. In this study, the performance of iterative codes based on turbo equalizers with equivalent coding rates and similar code word lengths were analyzed. Underwater acoustic communication system experiments using these two coding techniques were conducted on Kyeong-chun Lake in Munkyeong City. The distance between the transmitter and receiver was 400 m, and the data transfer rate was 1 Kbps. The experimental results revealed that the performance of turbo codes is better for channeling than that of convolutional codes that use a BCJR decoding algorithm.

  • Turbo codes of long block sizes have been known to show very good performance in an AWGN channel and the turbo code has been strongly recommended as error correction code for W-CDMA in 3GPP(3rd Generation Partnership Project). Recently, turbo codes of short block sizes suitable for real time communication systems have attracted a lot of attention. Thus, in this paper we consider the turbo code of 1/3 code rate and short frame size of 192 bits in ITU-R channel model. We analyzed the performance of W-CDMA systems of 10MHz bandwidths employing RAKE receiver with not only MRC diversity but also SOVA-based turbo code.

  • In this paper, we propose an incremental redundancy(IR)-hybrid ARQ(HARQ) scheme which uses double binary turbo codes for error correction. We also propose a methodology for basic analysis of the throughput which is a performance index of HARQ. The proposed double binary turbo IR-HARQ scheme provides higher throughput than binary IR-HARQ, which uses binary turbo codes for error correction, at all $E_s/N_0$. An extra coding gain is also attained by using the proposed HARQ scheme over the coding gain achieved by turbo codes only.

  • The performance of turbo codes is investigated in the direct detection optical PPM channel. We assume that an ideal photon counter is used as an optical detector and that the channel has background noise as well as quantum noise. Resulting channel model is M-ary PPM Poisson channel. We propose the structure of the transmitter and receiver for applying turbo codes to this channel. We also derive turbo decoding algorithm for the proposed coding system, by modifying the calculation of the branch metric inherent in the original turbo decoding algorithm developed for the AWGN channel. Analytical bounds are derived and computer simulation is performed to analyze the performance of the proposed coding scheme, and the results are compared with the performances of Reed-Solomon codes and convolutional codes.

  • In this paper, a concatenated turbo and BCH coding is proposed for the wireless ATM cell transmission and the bit error rate(BER) and the cell loss ratio(CLR) for the Nosed system is obtained. Turbo code with code rate of 1/2 and BCH code with error correction capability of 5 and 15 bits are used in the simulations. It is shown that the proposed system obtained about 0.2 and 0.4 ㏈ gain over the conventional Turbo code at bit error rate of 0.001. Also the proposed system obtained about 0.1 and 0.2 ㏈ gain over the conventional Turbo code at cell loss rate of 0.01.

  • It is well-known that the performance of turbo codes can be improved by allocating different energies per code symbol. In this paper, based on this observation, we propose a joint encoding and modulation scheme for quadrature amplitude modulated turbo code systems. In the proposed scheme, the amount of energy difference between the turbo coded symbols is optimized by optimizing the constellation of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The proposed scheme offers better coding gain compared to the conventional combination of binary turbo code and QAM at the bit error rate of 10$^{-5}$. Also, the performance of binary turbo codes with the proposed QAM constellation for various code symbol mapping strategies are verified.
