  • Borehole radar reflection surveys were carried out in the horizontal borehole to detect EDZ while constructing the tunnel for the research facility of the nuclear waste disposal in Korea. The horizontal borehole has been bored at a length of 35 m from shelter to be parallel with the tunnel which would be planed. While the tunnel has been constructing with the explosive excavation, the borehole radar reflection surveys carried out 5 times with the interval of 2 or 4 days for monitoring EDZ. The most typical change of the reflection event resulted from the face of the wall of tunnel which had been produced newly by the excavation of the tunnel daily, EDZ has been detected with constructing images of difference between two measurement stages, and also the change of EDZ through the time has been done, which is due to the generation of crack and weakening of the rock strength of the face of the tunnel's wall near previous portion of the face of a blind end of tunnel according to explosive excavation.

  • Microseismic monitoring is utilized for the performance verification and safety management of the structure by detecting fine levels of damage. In order to construct a highly reliable microseismic monitoring system, the role of signal conditioner is critical. The signal conditioner helps with accurate data collection and precision control of the device, and performs additional functions such as signal conversion, linearization, and amplification. In this technical report, noise reduction signal conditioner suitable for mining sites was developed and reviewed for the purpose of implementing more precise monitoring by supplementing the previously developed microseismic monitoring system.

  • The monitoring of a free surface generated by waterjet cutting technology is very important for an efficient construction process. In this study, experiments using a laser sensor were performed to provide a data processing method and to determine optimized parameters. The experimental parameters here are the angular resolution, measurement distance, and free surface cutting shape. The results show that the monitoring resolution increases with a decrease in the angular resolution and the horizontal measurement distance and with an increase in the cutting (free surface) width. This laser monitoring method can be applied during the measurement of free surface shapes and depths in situ.

  • In recent years, as safety management in underground mines has become more important in the worldwide, mine safety management technologies combining information communication technology such as real-time worker position tracking, monitoring system and equipment remote control have been developed. Wireless communication system is mainly applied to these technologies for the flexibility of network configuration. There are some cases the monitoring system was installed in domestic underground mines, but, it is necessary to develop the technology more suitable for domestic mining standard. In this study, we developed the real-time environmental monitoring system using ZigBee technology and examined the result of application to domestic limestone mine. Furthermore, applicability of the developed environment monitoring system to $VentSim^{TM}$ LiveView was checked. This study is expected to contribute to the related studies like the optimization of the ventilation system in underground mines.

  • This paper deals with inspecting and monitoring cracks developed on a subway tunnel liner during the construction of temporary supports and excavation. The cracks have developed near a enlarged part of the tunnel. Several measurements, crack gauge, internal displacement measurement, 3-D laser scanner have been conducted to monitor the progress of cracks and effects of them on the tunnel. Local measurement, additional propagation of cracks and deformation of liner, have been conducted by crack gauge and internal displacement measurement. Global inspection has been conducted by 3-D laser scanner. From the scanned data, occurrence of global deformation of tunnel and rail has been evaluated. Because of limited sequence of construction at the ground, no apparent deformation of crack propagation has been measured. As presented in this paper, deformation of tunnel liner and effects of rail need to be investigated in view of local and global aspects.

  • This paper presents the evaluation result of the Namsan 1st tunnel traffic information system, which is providing the real time queue length status and incidence information inside of the Namsan 1st tunnel, 1600meters long in the Seoul metropolitan CBD. This information system plays an important role because of notifying drivers to pay a toll for the tunnel path, the congestion information in advance. According to the analysis, an evident improvement on the tunnel path and its bypass without any conspicious adverse impact. Furthermore, survey analysis found that motorists placed a high value on the provided information. During peak time, the system turned out to help motorists to relax their hasty minds. As well, several performance indices showed the reduction of congestion and travel time variation on both of the tunnel path and its bypass, in spite of no traffic information on the bypass.

  • FBG sensors are mainly used to measure deformation of structures such as tunnels, bridges and ships. In this paper, an interrogator of FBG sensors is developed and implemented to measure the status of structures. A developed interrogator includes CAN wired and Zigbee wireless communication for remote monitoring. Strain of structure is measured using shift of wavelength of reflected light from FBG sensor. A digital signal controller is used to process signals of a FBG sensor and transmit data for remote monitoring. As a result of experiment, developed interrogator is effective to measure deformation of structures.

  • Monitoring is the act of collecting and analyzing accurate engineering information using various methods and instruments. The purposes of the monitoring are design verification, construction management, quality control, safety management, and diagnose of structure etc.. The diagnose evaluation of the geotechnical structures corresponds to the confirmation of the structural performance. It is aimed to judge the soundness of geotechnical structures considering the degree of damage due to the environmental change and elapsed time. Recently, microseismicity, which is widely known in Korea, can be used for safety management and diagnoses of structure as it detects the micro-damage without disturbance of the structure. This report provides guideline on the procedure for assessing an underground oil storage cavern using microseismic monitoring techniques. Guidelines cover the selection of monitoring systems, sensor array, sensor installation and operation of systems, and interpretation.
