  • Focusing on the load tunnel, this study assessed the behavior of rock pillars with less than 0.5D of the minimized distance between the two horizontal tunnels by using a three dimensional numerical analysis. Based on a parameter affecting the behavior of rock pillars, this study evaluated different safety factors according to pillar width, depth and rock conditions. It turned out that as the pillar width increases, the current curve of safety factors in accordance with depth and rock conditions shows more of the nonlinear behavior. Judging from the minimum safety factor, the study suggested a design chart, working on the minimized distance between the two horizontal tunnels.

  • Domestic masonry railroad tunnel lining consists of red bricks or granite stone blocks and mortar. It is necessary to evaluate the behaviour of the masonry tunnel lining during an earthquake because the lining was constructed without the consideration of seismic loads. In this study, a methodology to evaluate the seismic resistant capacity of masonry tunnel linings was proposed, i.e. material property evaluation and seismic analysis technique. The red brick masonry tunnel lining is arrayed with multi-layers composed of 3 to 5 bricks depending on ground conditions and each brick is attached with mortar. Equivalent property concept was adopted to consider the stiffness difference among the red brick material itself and joints between bricks. Response spectrum analysis was performed by considering ground-structure interactions. A parametric study was performed to figure out the effect of relative stiffness between the lining and rock mass on the seismic behavior. A resonable countermeasure to minimize the earthquake-induced damage was also proposed.

  • A GIS-based tunnelling risk management system(GIS-TURIMS) was developed as a product of this study, The developed system uses ArcView 8.1 as a basic platform and the built-in interface(VBA) has been used to perform first-order simplified analyses for the prediction of tunnelling-induced ground movements and building damage assessment. The main emphasis of this study was to develop a working framework that can be used in the perspective of tunnelling risk management. The developed system is capable of carrying out cornputationally intensive analyses for ground movement prediction as well as buildings/utilities damage assessment taking full advantage of the GIS technologies. This paper describes the concept and details of the GIS-TURIMS development and implementation.

  • This research work presents 3-D behavior of adjacent structures due to tunnelling induced ground movements by means of field measuring data and nonlinear FEM tunnel analysis. The results of the analytical methods from Mohr-Coulomb model are compared with the site measurement data obtained during the twin tunnel construction. It was found that the location and stiffness of the structure influence greatly the shape and pattern of settlement trough. The settlement trough for Greenfield condition was different from the trough for existing adjacent structures. Therefore the load and stiffness of adjacent structures should be taken into account for the stability analysis of the structures.

  • The final stability analysis of the tunnel structure is generally evaluated by performing site monitoring to determine whether or not the measured value through the convergence after the completion of excavation in the face. When the ground conditions are so poor, the reinforcement around the tunnel was applied for enhancing the stability of tunnels. For the additional tunnel crown collapse or excessive displacement have occurred under construction, correlation analysis were performed for the comparison construction and numeric analyses. In this paper, we investigated the collapse types, tunnel collapse were mostly occurs at the crown and they were analyzed because of the geological conditions in the collapse zone. And also, it was analyzed as being correlated in the crown of tunnel exists a fault fracture zone which extends to the surface part. Thus, in case of ground conditions such as fault fracture zone with a tunnel extending from the crown to the surface, the behavior is larger than the behavior predicted by numerical method.

  • The structural anisotropy and heterogeneity of rock mass, caused by discontinuities and weak zones, have a great influence on the deformation behavior of a tunnel. A tunnel construction in these complex ground conditions is very difficult. No matter how excellent a geological investigation is, local uncertainties of rock mass conditions still remain. Under these uncertain circumstances, an accurate forecast of the ground conditions ahead of the advancing tunnel face is indispensable to a safe and economic tunnel construction. This paper presents the effect of anisotropy and heterogeneity of the rock masses to be excavated by numerical analysis. The influences of distance from weak zone, the size or dimension, the different stiffness and the orientation of weak zones are analysed by 3-D finite element analysis. By analysing these numerical results, the tunnel behavior due to excavation can be well understood and the prediction of rock mass condition ahead of the tunnel face can be possible.
