  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the geomorphic processes of beach and sanddune development in the Chungcheong-Namdo Province. The sands consist mainly of quartz and feldspar with lesser amounts of mica and other heavy minerals. With the exception of those from the granite, the sands have a very fine texture. Another characteristic of the sand grains is low degrees of roundness and grading indicating that source areas for the material were in the vicinity of the accumulating field. Over the years, the beaches have receded as a response to the decreasing amount of depositional materials. The driving force for the formation and transformation of coastal dunes in the study area is dominant winds from the center of the Siberian High. To some extent, the erosion of coastal dunes has been a global phenomenon. The degradation process occurred most actively when spring tides attacked beaches, berms, and foredunes. The relief and shape of present-day coastal dunes is determined initially by the Pleistocene strata underneath. From the fact that the strata contained traces of frozen structure, it can be inferred that sediment once experienced the process of soil formation.

  • An investigation was carried out to study the diversity of aquatic insects, functional feeding groups (FFGs), habitat oriented groups (HOGs), and species-specific distribution in the Taean area in Korea from June to August, 2015. As a result, a total of 72 species belonging to 30 families and six orders were identified in all the investigated regions. Odonata (22 spp.: 30.56%) was the largest group in species richness followed by Coleoptera (21 spp.: 29.16%), Hemiptera (17 spp.: 23.61%) and Diptera (8 spp.: 11.11%) while for Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, only two species (2.78%) were found. In addition, Plecoptera and Megaloptera inhabiting clean and flowing waters were not found. In the FFGs, predators (48 spp.: 66.67%) were relatively larger as represented by Odonata, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera, whereas shredders and scrapers were lower in proportion. The dominant groups of HOGs were swimmers (24 spp.: 33.33%), climbers (18 spp.: 25.0%), and sprawlers (12 spp.: 16.67%), which were characterized as aquatic insects community of island. Four species: Cybister lewisianus Sharp, Helophorus auriculatus Sharp, Agrypnia pagetana Curtis, Diplonychus esakii Miyamoto & Lee that are designated as Endangered, Near Threatened, and Vulnerable (Korean Red List) have been found to inhabitthe Taean area. Also, two species belonging to the exportable species group (Ceriagrion auranticum Fraser, Paracercion melanotum (Selys)) and one species belonging to the climate-sensitive biological indicator group (Ischnura elegans (Van der Linden)) were identified. In this study, four significant species including the Endangered are presented on the Korean distribution map based on the information in the national ecosystem survey accumulated for 7 years (2006-2012) by the Ministry of Environment.

  • This study looked into conflicts of government policies for oil spill sites which are focusing on Taean-gun after the oil spill in Taean-gun and examined the effects on the conflicts. There are lots of conflicts on the on-going restoration project of fishing ground environment(fishing ground inspection, restoration program development, improvement in fishery biology ecosystem and fishery productivity). For example, these show diverse conflicts between business associates, project processes, business subjects, project participation, and the use of fishing ground. This study found out the first reason of dissatisfaction and conflicts is that there is a difference between groups in terms of political aims and perception. Secondly, lack of communication and cooperation between the center and the provinces, organizations in the provinces, the local government and fishing village cooperatives, fishermen in the fishing industry. Thirdly, the local government and the fishing village head don't show their leadership to improve project performance.

  • During the periods from lily to October, 2000 in Hongseong and lucy to October, 2001 in Taean in the west coast of Korea, the following environmental conditions prevailed : water temperature : 22.0~26.817, salinity 27.23 ~30.80%, dissolved oxygen 4.12 ~6.26 ml/l, pH 7.89 ~8.09, phosphate 0.39 ~0.65 $\mu m$ , inorganic nitrogen 5.05~9.26 $\mu m$, suspended solid 5.4~20.8 mg/l and chemical oxygen demand 1.12~1.87 mg/l. The B-shaped veliger larvae of the Ark shell occurred in maximum number at $25^{\circ}C$ prevailing from mid-August at Hongseong and Taean. Full grown larvae reached maximum abundance from late August. To identify the effectiveness of the substratum for spat collection, raschel net were tested to Larval settlement. The most effective depth to collect the larvae in natural environment was the collectors suspended at 7~8 m depth. At these depths, about 49 to 94 spats were found on the collector (40$\times$50 cm), The growth of shell height (Y) to shell length (X), and total weight (W) to shell length (L) could be formulated as follows respectively: Hongseong: SH = 0.7168 SL -0.6466 ( $r^2$ = 0.9839), TW = $0.0001SL^{3.1705}$ ($r^2$ = 0.9882) Taean: SH = 0.736 SL -0.8824 ($r^2$ : 0.9899), TW : 0.00005 $SL^{3.3731}$ ($r^2$ : 0.9899)

  • Sea level rise due to global warming causes seawater intrusion into aquifers in coastal areas. Seawater intrusion vulnerability index was developed using PSR (Pressure, State, Response) model and analysis hierarchy process (AHP). Coastal regions in Korea, Gangwon-do Sokcho-si, Incheon-si Ganghwa-gun, Chungcheongnam-do Taean-gun, Jeollanam-do Yeosu-si, Jindo-gun were chosen and 14 indicators were selected by considering the humanities, economic, social, environmental aspects. Re-scaling method was used for the standardization of indices and questionnaire survey was performed to calculate weight values for each index. The results showed that Yeosu-si was selected as the most vulnerable region to seawater intrusion. The seawater intrusion index developed in this research can be used to analyze the vulnerable regions to seawater intrusion and to establish a policy to minimize the seawater intrusion problems in coastal regions.
