  • The purpose of this study is to build user's psychological response process model on design evaluation. Users firstly evaluate design factors such as form, structure, texture and colors which are basic elements of product design. These factors, however are affected by product's situational factors, user's individual factors and environmental factors. That is, even same design can be evaluated differently by users according to product's situational factors such as price level, brand prestige level and marketing programs, and user's individual factors such as tastes, involvement level, personality, lifestyles and demographics, and environmental factors such as culture, sub-culture, social class, reference group and family and so on. Understanding how users evaluate product design is necessary to increase the possibility to create user-preferring design and also is the starting point of user-based design and design marketing. In the future researches, it is necessary to examine more factors which are not included in the study and to find out the relationship between factors affecting user's evaluation on design and user's psychological response.

  • This study is to analyze the effect of product involvement on consumer purchase process. From review on previous involvement literatures, enduring product involvement can be defined as "a person's arousal and motivational state activated by product on the basis of his basic value, objective and ego-relevance." To evaluate the effect of involvement on product purchase process, 11 hyphotheses concerning behavioral aspects which is expected to comprise consumer purchase process and to be influenced by degree of involvement were constructed: prepurchase information search, alternative brand comparision, utilization of product attribute, brand differentiation, brand commitment, product knowledge, influence of reference group, dependence on price, price awareness, cognitive dissonance and purchase optimization. Hyphotheses are tested with data from 388 housewives through 20 item involvement scale developed with multi-dimensional perspective on involvement. The scale successfully provides rank order of 8 selected products expected to cover the spectrum of product involvement: formal clothes, coffee, washing machine, shampoo, perfume, detergent, soft drink, pain-reliever as the order of product involvement. Major findings of this study are as follow. First of all, incresed differences were found in hihg involvement product like formal clothes with respect to the degree of prepurchase information search, alternative brand comparision, utilization of product attribute, influence of reference group in any method of analysis. Secondly, invlovement should be interpreted as a consumer characteristic rather than a product one. This means that consumers involve themselves with products, instead products themselves do not have any involvement.

  • Corrugated bulkheads have many advantages compared to stiffened bulkheads, and they have thus been used for the cargo tank bulkheads of commercial vessels, such as bulk carriers, product oil carriers, and chemical tankers. Various studies have been carried out to find the optimum corrugation shape for bulk carriers, but optimum design studies for chemical tankers with bulkheads made of high-priced materials are scarce. The purpose of this study is to develop a minimum weight design method for horizontal corrugated bulkheads for a chemical tanker. An evolution strategy (ES) that searches for a reliable global optimum point was applied as an optimization technique, and the structural safety of the optimum design was verified through structural analysis using the finite element method (FEM). The results were compared with those of an existing ship, which showed a weight reduction of about 14% with equivalent structural strength.

  • The collaboration that seeks to complement each other by judging and sharing the comparative advantages between companies is currently being actively progressed as a new and unusual collaboration that is not routine among not only the same industry but also different industries. This trend is increasing consumer interest based on enjoyment and fun. However, these collaborations cannot consistently lead to positive effects, and rather, if all companies collaborate, it could have an adverse effect. The current study explored the consumer's response to the attitude toward product and purchase intention of collaboration through consumption value and brand trust based on the consumer's understanding, assuming that the consumer's response cannot always be positive. As a result, brand trust played a mediating role in the intention to purchase and attitude toward product. This study examines the relationship between consumption value and collaboration products between brands, and from the perspective of a company, it can provide practical implications for establishing brand management and strategy through a unique collaboration strategy based on the understanding of consumers.

  • Consumers' favorable attitude toward ethical brands, and the rise of ethical consumers, is a recent global trend. Nevertheless, prior studies have emerged that favoring ethical products does not necessarily lead to consumers' purchase. Focusing on this, authors attempted to explore what perceptions of the brand lead to purchase behavior. Three experiments were conducted for this purpose. Results are as follows. First, even in ethical products, consumers choose the product when it is perceived as more ethical. This tendency has been shown for both eco-friendly type and donation type products. Second, when there was no noticeable difference in ethicality, ethical consumers consider brand reputation as an important factor in choice. Third, results remains regardless of consumer individual characteristics (consumer altruism, conspicuousness). Note that, unexpectedly, the underdog effect was not observed among altruistic consumers. Several implications, limitations of research, and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) approach to effectively solve the reverse logistics network with centralized centers (RLNCC). For the proposed HGA approach, genetic algorithm (GA) is used as a main algorithm. For implementing GA, a new bit-string representation scheme using 0 and 1 values is suggested, which can easily make initial population of GA. As genetic operators, the elitist strategy in enlarged sampling space developed by Gen and Chang (1997), a new two-point crossover operator, and a new random mutation operator are used for selection, crossover and mutation, respectively. For hybrid concept of GA, an iterative hill climbing method (IHCM) developed by Michalewicz (1994) is inserted into HGA search loop. The IHCM is one of local search techniques and precisely explores the space converged by GA search. The RLNCC is composed of collection centers, remanufacturing centers, redistribution centers, and secondary markets in reverse logistics networks. Of the centers and secondary markets, only one collection center, remanufacturing center, redistribution center, and secondary market should be opened in reverse logistics networks. Some assumptions are considered for effectively implementing the RLNCC The RLNCC is represented by a mixed integer programming (MIP) model using indexes, parameters and decision variables. The objective function of the MIP model is to minimize the total cost which is consisted of transportation cost, fixed cost, and handling cost. The transportation cost is obtained by transporting the returned products between each centers and secondary markets. The fixed cost is calculated by opening or closing decision at each center and secondary markets. That is, if there are three collection centers (the opening costs of collection center 1 2, and 3 are 10.5, 12.1, 8.9, respectively), and the collection center 1 is opened and the remainders are all closed, then the fixed cost is 10.5. The handling cost means the cost of treating the products returned from customers at each center and secondary markets which are opened at each RLNCC stage. The RLNCC is solved by the proposed HGA approach. In numerical experiment, the proposed HGA and a conventional competing approach is compared with each other using various measures of performance. For the conventional competing approach, the GA approach by Yun (2013) is used. The GA approach has not any local search technique such as the IHCM proposed the HGA approach. As measures of performance, CPU time, optimal solution, and optimal setting are used. Two types of the RLNCC with different numbers of customers, collection centers, remanufacturing centers, redistribution centers and secondary markets are presented for comparing the performances of the HGA and GA approaches. The MIP models using the two types of the RLNCC are programmed by Visual Basic Version 6.0, and the computer implementing environment is the IBM compatible PC with 3.06Ghz CPU speed and 1GB RAM on Windows XP. The parameters used in the HGA and GA approaches are that the total number of generations is 10,000, population size 20, crossover rate 0.5, mutation rate 0.1, and the search range for the IHCM is 2.0. Total 20 iterations are made for eliminating the randomness of the searches of the HGA and GA approaches. With performance comparisons, network representations by opening/closing decision, and convergence processes using two types of the RLNCCs, the experimental result shows that the HGA has significantly better performance in terms of the optimal solution than the GA, though the GA is slightly quicker than the HGA in terms of the CPU time. Finally, it has been proved that the proposed HGA approach is more efficient than conventional GA approach in two types of the RLNCC since the former has a GA search process as well as a local search process for additional search scheme, while the latter has a GA search process alone. For a future study, much more large-sized RLNCCs will be tested for robustness of our approach.
