Residual pesticides discharged from diffuse sources at agricultural area in association with suspended solid will be settled at downstream, and may degrade surface water quality. This research studied dechlorination kinetic of atrazine, one of triazine-category herbicide, using zero-valent iron (ZVI) in sediment. It can be observed from the experiments that buffer capacity of sediment helped pH maintained beutral, resulted in continuous dechlorination. Sediments were spiked with atrazine at 10, 30, and 50 mg atrazine/L of total sediment for batch experiments. Dechlorination constants were $1.38x10^{-1}/d$ for the initial concentration of 10 mg/L, $1.29x10^{-l}/d$ for 30 mg/L, and $7.43x10^{-2}/d$ for 50 mg/L while dechlorination constants of initial concentration of 50 mg/L without ZVI adding were estimated as $3.05x10^{-2}/d. Half lifes atrazine by ZVI were estimated as 5.03 d fur 10 mg/L, 5.38 d for 30 mg/L, and 9.33 d for 50 mg/L, respectively.
This study investigated the use of Geobacter lovleyi with TBOS(Tetrabutoxysilane) for TCE(Trichloroethylene) dechlorination. The TCE dechlorination by Geobacter lovleiy was mathematically described as the independent variables such as initial concentration of TCE, protein mass of Geobacter lovleyi and initial concentration of TOBS, and these were modeled by the use of response surface methodology(RSM). These experiments were carried out as a Box-Behnken Design(BBD) consisting of 15 experiments. The application of RSM yielded the following equation, which is empirical relationship for the dechlorination efficiency($Y_1$, %) of TCE and first order kinetic constant of TCE($Y_2,\;d^{-1}$) by independent variables in coded unit : $Y_1=-11.50X_1$(initial concentration of TCE) + $4.25X_2$(protein mass as Geobacter lovleyi injected mass) - $4.75X_3$(initial concentration of TBOS) - ${6.58X_1}^2$ - ${8.58X_2}^2$ + 93.67, $Y_2=-10.92X_1+5.06X_2-4.89X_3-{4.93X_3}^2-2.19X_1X_2+2.54X_1X_3-2.19X_2X_3+16.71$. In this case, the value of the adjusted determination coefficient(adjusted $R^2$= 0.975 and 0.934) were closed to 1, showing a high significance of the model. Statistical results showed the order of TCE dechlorination at experimental factors to be initial TCE concentration > initial TBOS concentration > protein mass, but the interaction effects were non-significant.

Starting at the beginning q the 20th century, increasing amounts of tetrach1oroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE)were manufactured due to the extensive use of these compounds in industry, in the military, and in private households, mainly as nonflammable solvents. This widespread use, along with careless handling and storage, are among the most serious contaminants of soil, sediment and groundwater. Highly chlorinated ethenes are typically not degraded through oxygenation by aerobic bacteria Since complete reductive dechlorination of PCE and TCE to ethene (ETH) has been observed in anaerobic enrichment culture, anaerobic dehalorespiring bacteria have received increased attention in the last decade. Under anaerobic conditions, these compounds con be reductively dehalogenated to less-chlorinated ethenes or innocuous ethene by microorganism through dehalorespiration. We have been studying anaerobic enrichment culture which used lactate as the electron donor for reductive dechlorination of PCE to ETH the anaerobic mixed microbial culture was enriched from the sediment sample taken from site contaminated with PCE. PCE was consistently and completely converted to ethene. In addition, the accumulation of intermediate products such as 1,2-ds-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC) was observed in the anaerobic mixed microbial culture. the established dechlorinating enrichment culture was analyzed by DGGE using primers specific to DefrJ1ococcoides 16S rRNA gene sequences. In conclusion, we established the PCE dechlorinating enrichment culture and confirmed the existence of Dehalococcoides in an enrichment culture.
Reactive medium including zero-valent metals such as zero-valent iron ($Fe^0$) degrades chlorinated solvents as a contaminant plume flows through the treatment medium. Although the Feo based reactive barrier has been demonstnlted to be a cost effective for trichloroethenc (TCE)-contaminaled plume remediation, current approach is limited by low process eftlciency and uncertain, effective life of the medium. The objective of this study is to develop an enhanced treatment method of TeE-contaminated groundwater using Feo and direct current. The bench-scale test using flow-through $Fe^0$ reactor column confirmed that the application of direct current with $Fe^0$ is highly effective in enhancing the rate of TeE dechlorination. The dechlorination mechanism appears to be reductive, with the electrons supplied by the iron oxidation and external power supply serving as the additional source of electrons.

Pesticides from diffuse pollution sources adsorbed in suspended particles flow into surface water and threats to the public health. In this research, dechlorination constants of Atrazine by zero valent iron were measured with addition of buffer solution for simulating buffer capacity of sediment. When initial concentration of Atrazine was 10, 30, and 50 mg/L, their dechlorination was explained using the pseudo-first order reaction. Dechlorination constants $K_{obs}$ were $3.21{\times}10^{-2}/d$ in average.

Reductive dechlorination of chlorophenols by nickel coated iron was investigated to understand the feasibility of using Ni/Fe for the in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater. Zero Valent Iron(ZVI) was amended with Ni(II) ions to form bimetal(Ni/Fe). Dechlorination of five chlorophenol compounds and formation of intermediates were examined using Ni/Fe. Rate constant for each reaction pathway was quantified by the numerical integration of a series of differential rate equation. Experimental results showed that the sequence of hydrodechlorination rate constant was in the order of 2-CP>4-CP>2,4-DCP>2,4,6-TCP>2,6-DCP. The hydrodechlorination pathways for the conversion of each chlorophenol compound involves a full dechlorination to phenol via both concerted and stepwise mechanisms. Reaction pathways and corresponding kinetic rate constants were suggested based on the experiments and numerical simulations.

Portland cement used as binding material in combination of ferrous iron for reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organics is already widely studied topic by several researchers. However there is no clear evidence about the component solely responsible in cement for trichloroethylene (TCE) dechlorination. Many researchers suspect that the ettringite, monosulfate phases associated with hydration of cement are responsible active agents for TCE dechlorination. This study deals with synthesizing different pure crystalline minerals like ettringite and monosulfate phases of cement hydration and check individual phase's TCE dechlorinating capacity in combination with ferrous iron. The results indicated that the synthesized minerals showed no reduction capacity for TCE. The findings in the present study is significant as it shows that ettringite and monosulfate phases which were suspected minerals by previous researchers for TCE dechlorination are not reactive. Hence it is suspected that some other mineral or mineral form in cement phase could be responsible for TCE degradation.

Experimental study was conducted to identify the active agent for reductive dechlorination of TCE in cement/Fe(II) systems. Several potential materials-hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$), lepidocrocite (${\gamma}$-FeOOH), akaganeite (${\beta}$-FeOOH), ettringite ($Ca_6Al_2(SO_4)_3(OH)_{12}$)-that are cement components or parts of cement hydrates were tested if they could act as reducing agents by conducting TCE degradation experiments. From the initial degradation experiments, hematite was selected as a potential active agent. The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constant ($k\;=\;0.637\;day^{-1}$) for the system containing 200 mM Fe(II), hematite and CaO was close to that ($k\;=\;0.645\;day^{-1}$) obtained from the system containing cement and 200 mM Fe(II). CaO, which was originally added to simulate pH of the cement/Fe(II) system, was found to play an important role in degradation reactions. The reactivity of the hematite/CaO/Fe(II) system initially increased with increase of CaO dosage. However, the tendency declined in the higher CaO dosage region, implying a saturation type of behavior. The SEM analysis revealed that the hexagonal plane-shaped crystals were formed during the reaction with increasing degradation efficiency, which was brought about by increasing the CaO dosage. It was suspected that the crystals could be portlandite or green rust ($SO_4$) or Friedel's salt. The XRD analysis of the same sample identified the peaks of hematite, magnetite/maghemite, green rust ($SO_4$). Either instrumental analysis predicted the presence of the green rust ($SO_4$). Therefore, the green rust ($SO_4$) would potentially be a reactive agent for reductive dechlorination in cement/Fe(II) systems.
Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) such as tetrachloroethylene (PCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) are the contaminants most frequently found in soil and groundwater. They have a potential to be toxic to and persistent in environment. This study is focused on selection of zero-valent metal and ores for the removal of high concentration PCE or 1,1,1-TCA and mixture of two compound. For the screening of suitable metals, we measured dechlorination rate, removal capacities and economics by using batch reactor test. This results suggest that removal rate and dechlorination of high quality iron and zinc are higher than slag and nature ores like zinc and manganese. Among nature ores, zinc ores(64% purity) have highest removal capacities. And in economics zinc ores is 10 times better than high quality metal tested. We conclude zinc ore is most suitable metal for the removal of PCE or 1,1,1-TCA.
Zevo-valent iron (ZVI) has been widely used in permeable reactive barriers for reducing organic contaminants, such as trichloroethylene (TCE). The rapid reaction time, however, leads to decrease in reactivity and availability of ZVI. Shewanella algae BrY, a strain of dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria, can reduce the oxidized Fe (III) to Fe (II) and reduced Fe (II) can be reused to reduce the contaminant. The effect of Shewanella algae BrY on the reduction of the oxidized ZVI column and further TCE removal in the contaminated groundwater were studied at different flow rates and TCE input concentrations in this study. High input concentration of TCE and flow rate increase the amount of input contaminant and make to lower the effect of reduction by Shewanella algae BrY. Specially, the fast flow rate inhibits the direct contact and implantation on the surface of iron. The reduction of oxidized iron reactive barrier by Shewanella algae BrY can decrease the decreation of duration of PRBs by the precipitation of oxidized iron produced by dechlorination of TCE.
