  • The strengthened regulations for atmospheric emissions from ships have caused a necessity of new, alternative power system in ships for the low pollutant emissions and the high energy efficiency. Recently, new kinds of propulsion power system such as fuel cell system, which use hydrogen as an energy source, have been sincerely considered. Fuel conversion system to hydrogen is an essential part for fuel cell ship. We have investigated thermodynamically the steam reforming characteristics of hydrocarbons and alcohols for the fuel conversion systems.

Macroscopic Analysis on Supercritical Transition of Liquid Hydrocarbon Fuel (액체탄화수소의 초임계 천이과정에 대한 거시적 특성 분석)

  • In order to analyze supercritical transition of liquid hydrocarbon fuel which used propulsion engine, visualization of phase changing using Methylcyclohexane (MCH) was performed. Also, measurements of temperature and pressure were conducted to obtain saturation lines of MCH and Decane. delayed increase of the pressure existed near the critical point due to dramatical increase of specific heats and the critical opalescence was only observed from the end point of delaying to the critical point. Beyond the critical point, the boundary between phases disappeared and the strong density gradient was observed. As the comparison between experimental and numerical saturation lines, the numerical estimation for mixture had relatively little difference while the results of pure components had almost coincidence.

  • 오류역전파 신경망을 인산형 연료전지의 조업변수인 산소 및 수소 유량, 작동온도에 대하여 학습시켜 연료전지 모델을 구성하였다. 또한 구성된 모델을 이용하여 다양한 조업조건에서의 단위전지 성능을 예측하여 이를 실험결과와 비교하였으며, 학습된 신경망을 ASPEN PLUS의 단위공정으로 도입하여 50kW 출력의 연료전지 공정을 구성한 후 조업변수에 대한 영향을 살펴보았다. 3개의 층으로 구성된 오류역전파 신경망은 학습단계상수와 모멘텀이 각각 0.7 및 0.9인 경우 단위전지 성능곡선을 가장 정확히 학습하였으며, 이에 의하여 구성된 신경망 모델은 수소 및 산소의 유량, 온도의 변화에 따른 단위전지 성능곡선의 변화를 정확히 예측하였다. 연료전지 전체공정의 모사에서는 개질기의 경우 $600^{\circ}C$의 상압에서 수증기/탄화수소 비율이 2.6일 때, 연료전지의 경우 작동온도가 190~20$0^{\circ}C$일 때 연료전지의 출력이 최대값을 나타내었으며, 단위전지의 전기화학적 효율은 약 45%, 수소이용률은 약 61%, 발전시스템 전체의 효율은 18%이었다.

Fuel Supply of Direct Carbon Fuel Cells via Thermal Decomposition of Hydrocarbons Inside a Porous Ni Anode (다공성 니켈 연료 전극 내부에서 탄화수소의 열분해를 통한 직접 탄소 연료 전지의 연료공급)

  • This study offers a novel method for improving the physical contact between the anode and fuel in a direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC): a direct generation of carbon in a porous Ni anode through the thermal decomposition of gaseous hydrocarbons. Three kinds of alkane hydrocarbons with different carbon numbers (CH4, C2H6, and C3H8) are tested. From electron microscope observations of the carbon particles generated from each hydrocarbon, we confirm that more carbon spheres (CS), carbon nanotubes (CNT), and carbon nanofibers (CNF) were identified with increasing carbon number. Raman scattering results revealed that the carbon samples became less crystalline and more flexible with increasing carbon number. DCFC performance was measured at $700^{\circ}C$ with the anode fueled by the same mass of each carbon sample. One-dimensional carbon fuels of CNT and CNF more actively produced and had power densities 148 and 210 times higher than that of the CS, respectively. This difference is partly attributed to the findings that the less-crystalline CNT and CNF have much lower charge transfer resistances than the CS.

  • In the regeneratively cooled combustion chambers of liquid rocket engine using hydrocarbon fuels, coking occurs as the wall temperature increases which results in compounds deposition on the wall of cooling channels. This phenomenon reduces cooling capability of the coolant which finally causes damage to the combustor by overheating of the chamber wall. In this paper, experiment results using an electrical heating equipment to simulate the regeneratively cooled channel are introduced and based on the results the compatibility of copper alloy with hydrocarbon fuel Jet A-1 is investigated.

  • An experimental study of the combustion characteristics according to the equivalence ratio of hydrocarbon fuel/air premixture excited by ultrasonic standing wave are presented. The image of the propagating flame was acquired using a high-speed camera, and the combustion characteristics of each fuel were closely observed through image processing. it was conformed that ultrasonic standing wave has been found to stimulate the combustion reaction in the stoichiometric ratio.

  • Fuel cell is one of the promising electrochemical technologies enabling power production with various fuel sources such as hydrogen, hydrocarbon and even solid carbon. However, its long-term performance is often unstable and unpredictable. In this work, we observed that gasification-driven hydrocarbons were the culprit of unpredictability. Therefore, we controlled the presence of hydrocarbons with the help of external gas supply, i.e. argon and carbon dioxide, and suggested the optimal amount of carbon dioxide required for predictable fuel cell operations. Our optimization strategy was based upon the following observations; carbon dioxide can work as both an inert gas and a fuel precursor, depending on its amount present in the reactor. When deficient, the carbon dioxide cannot fully promote the reverse Boudouard reaction that produces carbon monoxide fuel. When overly present, the carbon dioxide works as an inert gas that causes fuel loss. In addition, the excessive carbon monoxide may result in coking on the catalyst surface, leading to the decrease in the power performance.

  • 환경문제와 석유자원의 고갈이 많은 연구자들을 기존 탄화수소연료를 대체할수 있는 재생 가능한 연료를 구하는데 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 수소연료는 유해배기물질이 없는 연소와 또한 연소후에 재생 가능한 물성분만 배출하는 속성으로 미래의 청정에너지로 각광을 받고 있다. 이러한 이유로 수소연료는 수송기계의 연료로도 주목을 받고 있다. 따라서 수소연료기관 개발은 21세기에도 지속적으로 진행될 것이다. 이에대한 초기연구로 기체 LPG 연료가 아닌 액체 LPG 연료를 흡기관에 분사하여 기화된 LPG 연료를 엔진으로 흡입하는 LPi엔진에 수소연료를 과급하여 엔진에 성능을 연구하고자 하였다.

  • 산소 이온 전도성 세라믹을 이용한 고체 산화물 연료전지의 전극은 원활한 전기화학반응을 위해, 이온 전도도, 전자 전도도 및 전기화학적 활성을 동시에 가지고 있어야 한다. 이를 위해 복합체 전극을 사용하며, 특히 음극의 경우 니켈(Nickel)과 Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)로 이루어진 복합체 전극을 혼합 및 소결을 통해 제조하여 사용하였다. 하지만, 니켈의 경우 탄화 수소 연료에서의 탄소 침적 문제와 열악한 산화환원 안정성(redox stability)등의 문제점을 가지고 있다. 따라서 니켈대신 전도성 세라믹을 사용한 세라믹 복합체 음극 개발이 활발히 이루어지고 있으며, 그 중 침투법(infiltration method)을 이용한 복합체 전극 제조 방법을 소개한다. 실제로 니켈 금속과 유사한 높은 전기 전도도를 갖는 Sr-doped Lanthanum Vanadate (LSV)을 이용해, YSZ-LSV 복합체 전극을 침투법을 이용해 제조하고, 소량의 촉매을 첨가하여, 이온전도도, 전자 전도도 및 촉매 활성을 갖는 복합체 음극을 제조하였다. 이 복합체 음극의 탄화수소에서의 연료전지 성능 및 redox stability을 측정하였다.

Analysis of Endothermic Regenerative Cooling Technologies by Using Hydrocarbon Aviation Fuels (탄화수소 항공유를 이용한 흡열재생냉각 기술분석)

  • In order to develop active cooling systems for a hypersonic cruise vehicle, a series of studies need to be preceded on regenerative cooling technologies by using endothermic reaction of liquid hydrocarbon aviation fuels. Among them, it is essential to scrutinize fluid flow/heat transfer/endothermic pyrolysis characteristics of supercritical hydrocarbons in a micro-channel, as well as to acquire thermophysical properties of hydrocarbon fuels in a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions. This study, therefore, reviewed those technologies and analyzed major findings in related research areas which have been carried out worldwide for the development of efficient operational regenerative cooling systems of a hypersonic flight vehicle.
