Interfacial Damage Sensing and Evaluation of Carbon and SiC Fibers/Epoxy Composites with Fiber-Embedded Angle using Electro-Micromechanical Technique (Electro-Micromechanical시험법을 이용한 섬유 함침 각에 따른 탄소와 SiC 섬유강화 에폭시 복합재료의 계면 손상 감지능 및 평가)

  • Interfacial properties and electrical sensing fer fiber fracture in carbon and SiC fibers/epoxy composites were investigated by the electrical resistance measurement and fragmentation test. As fiber-embedded angle increased, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of two-type fiber composites decreased, and the elapsed time takes long until the infinity in electrical resistivity. The initial slope of electrical resistivity increased rapidly to the infinity at higher angle, whereas electrical resistivity increased gradually at small angle. Furthermore, both fiber composites with small embedded angle showed a fully-developed stress whitening pattern, whereas both composites with higher embedded angle exhibited a less developed stress whitening pattern. As embedded angle decreased, the gap between the fragments increased and the debonded length was wider for both fiber composites. Electro-micromechanical technique could be a feasible nondestructive evaluation to measure interfacial sensing properties depending on the fiber-embedded angle in conductive fiber reinforced composites.

  • The fracture energy of glass fiber/carbon fiber/epoxy resin hybrid composite system was investigated in the aspect of fracture mechanism. Epoxy resin matrix was DGEBA-MDA-SN-HQ system. On the interface of glass fiber and matrix, post debone friction energy provided a major contribution to the fracture energy, and debonding energy and pull-out energy were of the similar value. In the case of fracture on the interface of carbon fiber and matrix, pull-out energy was the major contributor.

  • As a new method to predict the degree of dispersion in carbon nanocomposites, the electrical resistance (ER) method has been evaluated. After CNT epoxy resin was dropped on CF tow, the change in electrical resistance of carbon fiber tow was measured to evaluate dispersion condition in CNT epoxy resin. Good dispersion of CNTs in carbon nanocomposite exhibited low change in ER due to wetted resin penetrated on CF tow. However, because CNT network was formed among CFs, non-uniform dispersion occurred due to nanoparticle filtering effect by CF tow. The change in ER for poor dispersion exhibited large ER signal change. The change in ER was used for the dispersion evaluation of CNT epoxy resin. Correlation between interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and dispersion condition by ER method was established. Good CNT dispersion in nanocomposites led to good interfacial properties of fiberreinforced nanocomposites.

  • Various surface treatment techniques can be applied onto the surface of carbon fibers to increase interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). In a commerciaI treatment, first, surface of carbon fiber was oxidized, after that, a sizing agent was coated to improve handleability and adhesion to the matrix. Carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) which is made of these fibers show excellent ILSS but show low vaIues of impact strength In this study, reactive and ductile interphase was introduced between fiber and matrix to increase both the ILSS and impact strength. By using electric conductivity of carbon fibers, flexible polymers which have ionizable group, i.e., MVEMA and EMA, were coated onto the surface (oxidized) of carbon fiber by the technique of electrodeposition. ILSS and impact strength of composites were evaluated according to the surface treatments, i.e., commercial sizing treatment, interphase introduction, and without sizing treatment. Izod impact strength and ILSS of CFRC were simultaneously improved in thc thickness range of $0.08{\sim}0.12{\mu}m$ of MVEMA interphase. Water resistance of the composites was decreased by introducing MVEMA interphase.

Impact Behaviors of Ni-plated Carbon Fibers-reinforced Epoxy Matrix Composites (니켈도금된 탄소섬유 강화 에폭시 수지 복합재료의 충격 특성)

  • In this work, two types of Ni-plating, namely electrolytical and electroless Ni-platings on carbon fiber surfaces, were carried out to enhance the impact resistance of composites. And the comparison between electrolytical and electroless methods on their impact properties of composite system was studied. The surface properties of carbon fibers were characterized using XRD, SEM, and contact angle measurements. The impact behaviors were investigated using an Izod type impact tester. As experimental results, it was observed that electrolessly plated Ni layers had Ni-P alloys on carbon fiber surfaces as revealed by XRD, and electrolytically Ni-plated carbon fibers showed higher surface free energies than those of the electrolessly Ni-plated carbon fibers. In particular, the impact strengths of electrolessly Ni-plated carbon fibers-reinforced plastics were strongly increased. These results were probably due to the difference of wettabilities according to the different types of Ni-plating methods.

  • Dispersion and self-sensing evaluation for single-carbon fiber reinforced in three different acid-treated CNT-epoxy nanocomposites were investigated by electro-micromechanical techniques and wettability tests. Self-sensing based on contact resistivity exhibited more noise for single carbon fiber/acid-treated CNT-epoxy composites than it did for untreated CNT. However, the apparent modulus was higher the acid treated case than the untreated case which is attributed to better stress transfer. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between carbon fibers and the CNT-epoxy was lower than that between carbon fiber and neat epoxy due to the increased viscosity associated with the addition of the CNT. The CNT-epoxy nanocomposite exhibited more hydrophobicity than did neat epoxy. Change in the thermodynamic work of adhesion was consistent with changes in the IFSS but disproportional to that of the apparent modulus. The optimum condition of acid treatment on the need can be obtained instead of the maximum condition.

Effect of Anodized Carbon Fiber Surfaces on Interfacial Adhesion of Carbon Fiber-reinforced Composites (양극산화된 탄소섬유가 복합재료의 계면결합력에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of anodic oxidation on high strength PAN-based carbon fibers has been studied in terms of surface functionality and surface energetics of the fiber surfaces, resulting in improving the mechanical properties of composites. According to FT-IR and XPS measurements, it reveals that the oxygen functional groups on fiber surfaces induced by an anodic oxidation largely influence the surface energetics of fibers or the mechanical interfacial properties of composites, such as the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of composites. According to the contact angle measurements based on the wicking rate of a test liquid, it is observed that anodic oxidation does lead to an increase in surface free energy of the carbon fibers, mainly due to the increase of its specific (or polar) component. From the surface energetic point of view, it is found that good wetting plays an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fiber and epoxy resin matrix of the resulting composites. Also, a direct linear relationship is shown between 01s/01s ratio and ILSS or between specific component and ILSS of the composites for this system.

  • This study has a different direction from the existing technology of applying recycled carbon fiber obtained by recycling waste CFRP to CFRP again. A study was conducted to utilize recycled carbon fiber as a raw material for manufacturing a carbon/carbon (C/C) composite material comprising carbon as a matrix. First, it was attempted to recycle a commonly used epoxy resin composite material through a thermal decomposition process. By applying the newly proposed oxidation-inert atmosphere conversion technology to the pyrolysis process, the residual carbon rate of 1~2% was improved to 19%. Through this, the possibility of manufacturing C/C composite materials utilizing epoxy resin was confirmed. However, in the case of carbon obtained by the oxidation-inert atmosphere controlled pyrolysis process, the degree of oxygen bonding is high, so further improvement studies are needed. In addition, short-fiber C/C composite material specimens were prepared through the crushing and disintegrating processes after thermal decomposition of waste CFRP, and the optimum process conditions were derived through the evaluation of mechanical properties.

  • Interfacial properties and microfailure modes or electrodeposition(ED) treated carbon fiber reinforced polyetherimide(PEI) toughened epoxy composites were investigated using microdroplet test. ED was performed to improve the interfacial shear strength(IFSS). As PEI content increased, IFSS increased due to enhanced toughness and plastic deformation of PEI. In the untreated cafe, IFSS Increased with adding PEI content, and IFSS of pure PEI matrix showed the highest. On the other hand, thor ED-treated case IFSS increased with PEI content with rather low improvement rate. In the untreated case, neat epoxy resin appeared brittle microfailure mode, whereas pure PEI matrix exhibited more likely ductile microfailure mode. In the ED-treated case, neat epoxy exhibited more ductile fracture compared to the untreated case. Interfacial properties of epoxy-PEI composite can be affected efficiently by both the control of matrix toughness and ED treatment.

  • In this work, the effect of anodic oxidation on surface characteristics of high strength PAN-based carbon fibers was investigated in mechanical interfacial properties of composites. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by acid-base values, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angles. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). As a result, the acidity or the $O_{ls}/C_{ls}$ ratio of carbon fiber surfaces was increased, due to the development of the oxygen functional groups. Consequently, the anodic oxidation led to an increase in surface free energy of the carbon fibers, mainly due to the increase of its specific (or polar) component. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including ILSS and $K_{IC}$, had been improved in the anodic oxidation on fibers. These results were explained that good wetting played an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fibers and epoxy resin matrix.
