The samples for organic carbon analysis were collected between $5^{\circ}\;and\;17^{\circ}N$ along $131.5^{\circ}W$ in the northeast Pacific KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area. The mean concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) in the surface mixed layer $({\sim}50 m)$ was $100.13{\pm}2.05{\mu}M-C$, while the mean concentration of TOC in the lower 500m of the water column was $50.19{\pm}4.23{\mu}M-C$. A strong linear regression between TOC and temperature $(r^2=0.70)$ showed that TOC distribution was controlled by physical process. Results from the linear regression between chlorophyll-a and TOC, and between chlorophyll-a and particulate organic carbon (POC), decreasing of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the surface layer caused by non-biological photo-oxidation process. Below the surface layer, biological production and consumption occurred. DOC accumulation dominated in the depth range of $30{\sim}50m$ and DOC consumption occurred in the depth range of $50{\sim}200m$. TOC was inversely correlated with apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and TOC/AOU molar ratios ranged from -0.077 to -0.21. These ratios indicated that TOC oxidation was responsible fur $10.9{\sim}30.1%$ (mean 20.2%) of oxygen consumption in the NE Pacific KODOS area. In the euphotic zone, distributions of dissolved and particulate organic matter were controlled by photo-chemical, chemical, biological and physical processes.
The decomposition of chlorinated methanes including $CCl_4$, $CCl_3H$, and $CCl_2H_2$ was carried out using a thermal plasma process and the characteristics of the process were investigated. The thermal equilibrium composition was analyzed with temperature by Fcatsage program. The decomposition rates at various process parameters including the concentration of reactants, flow rate of carrier gas, and quenching rate, were evaluated, where sufficiently high conversion over 92% was achieved. The generation of main products was strongly influenced by the reaction atmosphere; carbon, chlorine, and hydrogen chloride at neutral condition; carbon dioxide, chlorine, and hydrogen chloride at oxidative condition. The decomposition mechanism was speculated considering the results from Factsage and the identification of generated radicals and ionic species. The main decomposition pathways were found to be dissociative electron attachment and oxidative by radicals formed in a plasma state.
In this research, the mathematical modeling of the formation of SiC layer on the activated carbon was studied to improve the durability and the oxidation resistance of catalyst supports. SiC layer on the activated carbon was formed by permeating SiC from dichlorodimethylsilane(DDS) into pores and depositing while the porous structure was kept. The best conditions of manufacturing the support were found by studying the characteristics of SiC/C which was modelled under various deposition conditions. Changes of the amount of deposition, the pore diameter, the surface area with time were obtained by simulating convection, diffusion and reaction in an isothermal reactor at a steady state. The uniform deposition in the pores of samples was obtained at a lower concentration of the reactant and a lower pressure. Additionally, it was observed that the pore diameter and the surface area have points of inflection at certain times of deposition, because deposition occurred on the inside surface of the pore at first and then on the outside surface of the particle.

We investigated mechanical, rheological and electrical properties of graphite/PP/LCP composites for a bipolar plate of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The composites containing very low molecular weighted PP showed much higher electrical conductivity compared with other thermoplastics. This was attributed to the enhanced dispersion of graphite particles due to the low viscosity of the PP. The conductivity of the composites was increased in a great extent by incorporation of small amount of carbon nano tube (CNT). However, the acid treated CNT which contains oxygen atoms did not increase the conductivity of the composite. From this result, it is concluded that the CNT has higher affinity with non polar polymer. The composite with low molecular weighted PP provided good processability so that the composites can be processed by an injection molding while the mechanical strength is deficient compared to other polymers. In order to reinforce the low mechanical property, LCP/PP was used as a binder and the graphite/PP/LCP composite showed the higher conductivity and moderate mechanical strength maintaining suitable processability.
The study aimed to develop a high-power enzymatic electrode for a wearable fuel cell that generates electricity utilizing lactate present in a sweat as fuel. Anode was fabricated by immobilizing lactate oxidase (LOx) on flexible carbon paper. As the lactate concentration in the electrolyte solution increased, the amount of current generated by catalysis of lactate oxidase increased. The immobilized LOx generated 1.5-times greater oxidation current density in the presence of gold nanoparticles than carbon paper only. Bilirubin oxidase (BOD)-immobilized cathode generated a larger amount of reduction current in the electrolyte saturated with oxygen than purged with nitrogen. A fuel cell composed of two electrodes was fabricated and cell voltage was measured under different discharge current. At the discharge current density of 66.7 ㎂/cm2, the cell voltage was 0.5±0.0 V leading to maximum cell power density of 33.8±2.5 ㎼/cm2.
In this study, we developed an impedance sensor capable of controlling electrode polarization by coating iridium oxide (IrOx) on the surface of the screen-printed carbon electrode. IrOx was deposited on the surface of carbon electrodes according to the number of cycles (0~50 cycles) by cyclic voltammetry. Observation of scanning electron microscope images revealed that the size and number of IrOx particles increased as the number of cycles increased. The changes in impedance responses as a function of the NaCl concentration of the as-obtained sensors were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensors manufactured in 50 cycles exhibited the best coefficient of determination and reproducibility, attributed to the well-controlled electrode polarization. We further demonstrated the usefulness of the IrOx-based sensor as a diagnosis sensor for dry eye syndrome by comparing the results of the commercially available osmometer and our sensor using actual solution samples.

SiC particles, 8.3 ${\mu}m$ in volume average diameter, were chlorinated in an alumina tubular reactor, 2.4 cm in diameter and 32 cm in length, with reactor temperature varied from 100 to $1200^{\circ}C$. The flow rate of the gas admitted to the reactor was held constant at 300 cc/min, the mole fraction of chlorine in the gas at 0.1 and the reaction time at 4 h. The chlorination was negligibly small up to the temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. Thereafter, the degree of chlorination increased remarkably with increasing temperature until $900^{\circ}C$. As the temperature was increased further from 900 to $1200^{\circ}C$, the increments in chlorination degree were rather small. At $1200^{\circ}C$, the chlorination has nearly been completed. The surface area of the residual carbon varied with chlorination temperature in a manner similar to that with the variation of chlorination degree with temperature. The surface area at $1200^{\circ}C$ was 912 $m^{2}/g$. A simple model was developed to predict the conversion of a SiC under various conditions. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood type rate law with two rate constants was employed in the model. Assuming that the two rate constants, $k_{1}$ and $k_{2}$, can be expressed as $A_{1e}^{-E_{1}/RT}$ and $A_{2e}^{-E_{2}/RT}$, the four parameters, $A_{1}$, $E_{1}$, $A_{2}$, and $E_{2}$ were determined to be 32.0 m/min, 103,071 J/mol, 2.24 $m^{3}/mol$ and 39,526 J/mol, respectively, through regression to best fit experimental data.

The char oxidation characteristics of high ash coal were experimentally investigated at several temperatures (from 900 to $1300^{\circ}C$) for 4 types of coals (Gunvor, Glencore, Noble, and ECM) under atmospheric pressure in a drop tube furnace (DTF). The char reaction rate was calculated from the exhaust gas concentrations (CO and $CO_2$) using FT-IR, and the particle temperature was measured using the two-color method. In addition, the activation energy and pre-exponential factor for high ash coal char were calculated based on the Arrhenius equation. The results show that as the ash content increases, the particle temperature and area reactivity decreases. This is because in high ash coal, the large heat capacity of the ash, ash vaporization, and relatively low fixed carbon content of ash suppress combustibility during char oxidation. As a result, the higher ash content of coal leads to high activation energy.
Manganese hydrogen phosphate hydrate, $MnHPO_4{\cdot}2.25H_2O$, is a major constituent of the pre-conditioning compositions for the manganese phosphate coating treatment over carbon steel substrate. This compound is conventionally produced by the synthesis in the aqueous solution process followed by the filtration and drying processes and a series of size reduction and classification processes in dry state. However, it is evident that the conventional process is neither environment-friendly nor cost-effective. In this work, a new process principle was examined based on the controlled double-jet precipitation technology to produce the manganese chemical product of fairly uniform particle size distribution in an aqueous solution media. The effects of stabilizing agents were comparatively studied by the scanning electron microscope analysis in a uniformity point of view of the resulting particle size. Polyvinylpyrrolidone and Gum Arabic were excellent in controlling the crystal growth step, resulting in fairly uniform size distributions of the particles from the controlled double-jet process.
In this study the effects of particle size and water content on the yields and physical/chemical properties of pyrolytic products were investigated through fast-pyrolysis of yellow poplar. Water content was critical parameters influencing the properties of bio-oil. The yields of bio-oil were increased with decreasing water content. However, the yield of pyrolytic product was not clearly influenced by feedstock's particle size. The water content, pH and HHV (Higher Heating Value) of bio-oil were measured to 20~30%, 2.2~2.4 and 16.6~18.5MJ/kg, respectively. The water content of feedstock was clearly influenced to water content of bio-oil. In terms of bio-char, HHV of them were measured to 26.2~30.1 MJ/kg with high content of carbon over 80%.
