  • The strengthening of concrete structures in situ with externally bonded carbon fiber is increasingly being used for repair and rehabilitation of existing structures. Because carbon fiber is attractive for this application due to its good tensile strength, resistances to corrosion, and low weight. Generally bond strength and behavior between concrete and carbon fiber mesh(CFM) is very important, because of enhancing bond of CFM. Therefore if bond strength is sufficient, it will be expect to enhance reinforcement effect. Unless sufficient, expect not to enhance reinforcement effect, because of occuring bond failure between concrete and CFM. In this study, the bond strength and load-displacement response of CFM to the concrete by the direct pull-out test(the tensile-shear test method) were investigated using the experiment and the finite element method analysis with ABAQUS. The key variables of the experiment are the location of clip, number of clips and thickness of cover mortar. The general results indicate that the clip anchorage technique for increasing bond strength with CFM appear to be effective to maintain the good post-failure behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate shear strengthening effects and behaviour of RC beams strengthened in shear by Carbon Fiber Mesh(CFM) and mortar for fixing CFM to concrete. Test parameters in experiment are shear span-to-depth ratio, layout of CFM and number of clip. From the test, it was shown that the governing failure patten was the bond failure between cover mortar and RC beam initiated at about 60% of maximum strength. And the strength of CFM was developed up to 19.6% of it's maximum tensile strength when the specimen reached to failure. The most effective enhancement using CFM and mortar were to attach CFM diagonally to concrete in a/d of 1.0 and increase the number of cilps in a/d of 1.5, respectively.

  • The objective of this work is to study the flexural strengthening effectiveness of Carbon Fiber Mesh (CFM) in reinforced concrete beams. Flexural strengthening for a simply supported reinforced concrete (RC) beam using CFM is developed by bonding CFM to the soffit of the beam. In this experimental program, five medium-sized reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFM are tested in bending to evaluate reinforcing effects of the CFM. The beams are designed to have high shear capacity so that expected dominant failure mode of specimens is bending. The reinforcing effect of CFM is small at crack initiation, but is considerable in flexural rigidity of the beam after crack initiation. In comparing the behaviors of strengthened and virgin beams each other, it is shown that the strength of RC beams can be enhanced by attaching CFM. A fairly good agreement between the measured values and the calculated ones is obtained at both the cracking strength and yield strength of the strengthened beams.

  • The electrical conductivity of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP's) has been improved by indium-tin oxide (ITO) nano-particle coating on carbon fibers for the purpose of lightning strike protection of composite fuselage skins. ITO nano-particles were coated on the surface of carbon fibers by spraying the colloidal suspension with 10~40% ITO content. The electrical conductivity of the CFRP has been increased more than three times after ITO coating, comparable to or higher than that of B-787 composite fuselage skins with metal wire-meshes on the outer surface, without sacrificing the tensile property due to the existence of nano-particles at fiber-matrix interface. The damage area by the simulated lightning strike was also verified for different materials and conditions by using ultrasonic C-scan image. As the electrical conductivity of 40% nano-ITO coated sample surpass that of the B-787 sample, the damage area by lightning strike also appeared comparable to that of the materials currently employed for composite fuselage construction.
