  • The aeroelastic stability analysis of a soft-in-plane, composite hingeless rotor blade in hover and in forward flight has been performed by combining the mixed beam method and the aeroelastic analysis system that is based on a moderate deflection beam approach. The aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the blade are obtained using the Leishman-Beddoes unsteady aerodynamic model. Hamilton's principle is used to derive the governing equations of composite helicopter blades undergoing extension, lag and flap bending, and torsion deflections. The influence of key structural modeling issues on the aeroelastic stability behavior of helicopter blades is studied. The issues include the shell wall thickness, elastic couplings and the correct treatment of constitutive assumptions in the section wall of the blade. It is found that the structural modeling effects are largely dependent on the layup geometries adopted in the section of the blade and these affect on the stability behavior in a large scale.

  • An inverse self-iterative procedure is developed to determine layer moduli which are significant for the structural evaluation of pavements in developing rational and analytical rehabilitation technique. Falling weight deflectometer(FWD) is adopted as a non-destructive testing(NDT)device. The layer elastic theory is used to interpret NDT data. The theoretical deflection basins of pavement structures obtained by full factorial design are used for a parametric study on the characteristics of deflection basins and regression analyses. Regression equations to estimate layer moduli of flexible pavements are proposed through the regression analyses of theoretical deflection basins. The relationships between the rate of change of moduli and deflections are developed for the efficient iteration. An inverse self-iterative procedure to ensure the accuracy of the layer moduli is proposed. Validity and applicability of the developed procedure are verified through various numerical model tests.

  • Rubber-pad forming process for materials such as metal in which portions of the die which act upon the material is composed of a natural or synthetic rubber or elastomer material. This makes the rubber pad forming process relatively cheap and flexible, high accuracy for small product series in particular. In this study, we carried out the physical test and finite element analysis of elastomer such as natural rubber and urethane for steel rack rube forming. The non-linear property of elastomer which are described as strain energy function are important parameter to design and evaluate of elastomer component. These are determined by material tests which are uni-axial tension and bi-axial tension. This study is concerned with simulation and investigation of the significant parameters associated with this process.

  • The moduli of concrete has been determined by various testing methods. The impact resonance (IR) method has been shown to be truly a simple nondestructive testing method which produces consistent results. It is possible to determine not only the modulus but also damping ratio from the IR test. However, the values of elastic modulus and damping ratio of concrete from the test is known to be affected by various test conditions including, specimen support condition, impact steel ball size and sampling rate. In this study, the optimum IR test conditions are suggested and validated experimentally. The test results showed that the recommended test conditions yielded a variation of resonant frequency within ${\pm}0.3%$ and damping ratio ${\pm}10.0%$. In addition, the modulus from the IR test was comparable to that from a static test when the effect of strain amplitude was properly taken into account.

  • Cares should be taken when performing the P and S wave velocity loggings in engineering and environmental fields. Some of them are the effect of casing, which is installed to prevent the borehole collapsing when the drilling is done on the loose ground such as soil and/or soft rock, and the discrepancy of the velocities of the same media according to the difference of the source wave frequency spectrum. The elastic moduli obtained from the P and S wave velocity logging have the dynamic characteristics. To overcome these difficulties, the following suggestions are recommended; (1) develop and apply a careful drilling technique that can keep the borehole wall without a casing, and (2) apply the logging methods with the suitable frequency bandwidth for the object of the velocity logging. It is important to make the aseismological engineers understand the difference between the dynamic elastic moduli and the static ones obtained from mechanical test, and to advise them to use the information properly.

  • Reinforced trackbeds are an important layer that has a significant effect on the deformation of the track, therefore, a deeper understanding of reinforced trackbeds is necessary. In this paper, we conduct a large triaxial test in order to evaluate the resilient modulus ($M_R$) of reinforced trackbed materials through considering several factors such as the grain size distribution (GSD) and loading conditions. It is identified that the maximum size of the particle, GSD, and compacted water content affect the $M_R$ but the loading frequency does not. Because these tests are performed with consideration of the field environment, the test results are useful for analyzing tracks including reinforced trackbeds. The data are limited to evaluating the parameters of $M_R$ model; however the parameters of the deviatoric and bulk stress models that can be used in various loading conditions are proposed.

  • In this study, the thermoelastic properties of poly lactic acid (PLA) based nanocomposites are predicted by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and a micromechanics model. The stereocomplex mixed with L-lactic acid (PLLA) and D-lactic acid (PDLA) is modeled as matrix phase and a single walled carbon nanotube is embedded as reinforcement. The glass transition temperature, elastic moduli and thermal expansion coefficients of pure matrix and nanocomposites unit cells are predicted though ensemble simulations according to the hydrolysis. In micromechanics model, the double inclusion (D-I) model with a perfect interface condition is adopted to predict the properties of nanocomposites at the same composition. It is found that the stereocomplex nanocomposites show prominent improvement in thermal stability and interfacial adsorption regardless of the hydrolysis. Moreover, it is confirmed from the comparison of MD simulation results with those from the D-I model that the interface between CNT and the stereocomplex matrix is slightly weak in nature.

  • As a manufacturing process of recycled aggregate improves the quality of recycled aggregate shall be sufficient enough to be used for structural concrete. This study characterized compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete that used recycled coarse and fine aggregate. Before the strength tests, the fundamental characteristics of recycled aggregate were preliminarily analyzed and the recycled aggregate satisfied the class 1 requirements in KS F 2573. As the replacement ratio increased, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete decreased. When the coarse and fine aggregates were completely replaced with the recycled, the compressive strength and elastic modulus were decreased by 13% and 31%, respectively. Based on the test results, this study suggests equations for predicting the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the recycled aggregate concrete with respect to the replacement ratio. The values from the equations were in good agreement with the test data from this study and others.

  • This study was conducted to develop the interlayer mixture that absorbs the stress between the old concrete pavement and the asphalt overlay pavement layer. The elasticity, the flexibility, the consistency and the impermeability is required for high-elastic Stress Absorbing Interlayer(HSAI) to absorb and disperse the stress that causes the flexural and horizontal movements of the joint and the crack. The HSAI developed from foreign product was satisfied with the design criteria. The specimens using the HSAI showed the significant reduction of the reflective crack compared those not using the HSAI. The significance included that the life of shear failure and horizontal displacement resistance increased 4 times. The life of the share failure increased to 5 times and the horizontal displacement increased to 9 times according to the selection of surface course material which showed the excellence of the HSAI.

  • The influence of the strain-rate on the thermomechanical characteristics of shape memory alloys (SMAs) is numerically investigated. The three-dimensional SMA constitutive equations of strain-rate effect is developed. The strain-rate effect is taken into account by introducing a coupling equation between the production rate of martensite and the temperature change. For the numerical results, the SMA algorithm is implemented into the ABAQUS finite element program. Numerical simulation shows that the pseudoelasticity of SMA may significantly be changed by considering the strain-rate due to the temperature change.
