  • There is increasingly more research focusing on the application of FRP reinforcing bars as an alternative material for steel reinforcing bars, but most such research look at short term behavior of FRP reinforced structures. In this study, the microscopic analysis and tensile behavior of Basalt and Glass FRP bars under freezing-thawing and alkaline conditions were experimentally evaluated. After 100 cycles of the freezing and thawing, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of FRP bars decreased by about 5%. In the case of microstructure of FRP bars during the initial 20 days, no significant damages of FRP bar sections were found under $20^{\circ}C$ alkaline solution; however, the specimens immersed in $60^{\circ}C$ alkaline solution were found to experience resin dissolution, fiber damage and the separation of the resin-fiber interface. In the alkaline environment, the strength decrease of about 10% occurred in the environment at $20^{\circ}C$ for 100 days, but the tensile strength of FRPs exposed for 500 days decreased by 50%. At temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, an abrupt decrease in the strength was observed at 50 and 100 days. Especially, the tensile strength decrease of Basalt fiber Reinforced Polymer bars showed more severe degradation due to the damage caused by dissolution of resin matrix and fiber swelling in alkaline solution. Therefore, in order to improve the long-term performance of the surface braided FRPr reinforcing bars, surface treatment is required to ensure alkali resistance.

  • When a laser pulse is irradiated on a CNT (Carbon Nanotube) and PDMS (Poly dimethylsiloxane) composite coated on a transparent PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate) substrate, a strong ultrasonic wave is generated due to the thermoelastic effect. In this paper, the thermoacoustic theory related to the wave generation by the CNT/PDMS composite was established. The waveforms of ultrasonic waves when a laser pulse having a Gaussian waveform is irradiated on the composite with a thickness of $20{\mu}m$ were numerically simulated. From the results, it was confirmed that ultrasonic shock waves can be generated from the CNT/PDMS composite and the waveforms are changed little even if the physical properties of the composite are changed by ${\pm}20%$. It was found that the peak positive and negative pressures increase as the thermal expansion coefficient increases, or as density, heat capacity and sound speed decreased. However, those changes were not so sensitive with thermal conductivity. In addition, the physical properties of the CNT/PDMS composite fabricated in this study were estimated from the comparison of the measurement and simulation results.

  • High amylose corn starch and dextrin (acid-treated at 30, 40 and 50℃ denominated as Dextrin30, Dextrin40 and Dextrin50) were added to non-fried instant noodles. X-ray diffraction pattern, water absorption, cooking loss, microstructure, and textural properties of non-fried instant noodles were investigated. The addition of high amylose corn starch/dextrin induced a slight peak intensity at 20o in the X-ray pattern indicating the insignificant formation of amylose-lipid complex. Non-fried instant noodles including high amylose corn starch/dextrin showed lower water absorption than the control. Dense microstructure in transverse section of noodles was observed in non-fried instant noodles including high amylose corn starch/dextrin except Dextrin50. Also, the addition of high amylose corn starch/dextrin induced low tensile strength, high firmness, and high stickiness. However, non-fried instant noodles containing Dextrin50 showed a loose microstructure and high cooking loss (3.98%), which might be associated with the textural properties such as the lowest tensile strength (0.17 N), lowest increase in firmness (46.77 N) and highest stickiness (18.43 N).

  • Since many geotechnical structures are constructed on a weathered granite layer, it is important to evaluate their characteristics. As a seismic design is the more important nowadays, the demands to estimate a shear wave velocity (VS) based on acceptable methods are increasing. In this study, an empirical equation predicting VS of the weathered granite layer is suggested based on the nonlinear multiple variable regression analysis whose independent variables are both SPT (Standard penetration test)-N60 and chemical weathering index. It is concluded that the accuracy of the empirical equation estimating VS of the weathered granite layer increases when it considers the chemical weathering index as an additional independent variable compared to the result of simple regression analysis using only N60.

  • The demand for faster, lighter, and thinner portable electronic devices has brought about a change in semiconductor packaging technology. In response, a stacked chip-scale package(SCSP) is used widely in the assembly industry. One of the key materials for SCSP is a die-attach film (DAF). Excellent flowability is needed for DAF for successful die attachment without voids. For DAF with high flowability, two-step curing is often required to reduce a cure crack, but one-step curing is needed to reduce the processing time. In this study, DAF composition was categorized into three groups: cure (epoxy resins), soft (rubbers), hard (phenoxy resin, silica) component. The effect of the composition on a cure crack was examined when one-step curing was applied. The die-attach void and flowability were also assessed. The cure crack decreased as the amount of hard components decreased. Die-attach voids also decreased as the amount of hard components decreased. Moreover, the decrease in cure component became important when the amount of hard component was small. The flowability was evaluated using high-temperature storage modulus and bleed-out. A decrease in the amount of hard components was critical for the low storage modulus at 100℃. An increase in cure component and a decrease in hard component were important for the high bleed-out at 120℃(BL-120).

  • The seawater cooling system of naval ships is installed to remove the toxic substances generated by CBR (Chemical, Biological, and Radiological) warfare and reduce the infrared signature of naval ships from outside the hull. The dispersion range of the nozzle is determined according to the injection pressure of seawater and the nozzle type. Therefore, it is necessary to select the appropriate injection pressure and design the optimal nozzles to increase the seawater dispersion area and maximize the efficiency of the cooling system. In this study, the applying feasibility of 3D printing technology to produce an injection nozzle for the seawater cooling system was examined. To this end, the extruded plastic specimens were fabricated by 3D printing, and the physical properties of the specimens were estimated through tensile testing. After this, the strain and stress of the nozzle as a function of the pressure were simulated by applying the estimated results to the finite element analysis. The finite element analysis results showed that the nozzle remained within the elastic range at the optimal pressure. The nozzle was estimated to be structurally stable, and the possibility of this study was confirmed.

  • To investigate the relationship between strain distribution and tensile properties of brittle material, five types of tensile coupon of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) modified the tab portion in order to have a strain distribution including S0, SD1, SD2, SV1, SV2 were tested. The ultimate stress and strain of SD2 and SV2 which was intended to have larger strain distribution were smaller than those of SD1 and SV1, that was more clearly shown in the test results of the symmetric coupons (SV series) than the asymmetric coupons (SD series). In addition, the ultimate stress and strain of most coupons with strain distribution in this study were decreased when compared to the control group with uniform strain. These results were analyzed in various ways through 1) the average of the strain values directly measured by the strain gages, 2) the converted strain calculated by dividing the total deformation by the effective length, and 3) the ultimate effective strain derived from both the elastic modulus and the ultimate load. The values measured by strain gage indicates response of the local region precisely, but it does not represent the response from whole section. However, the converted strain and effective strain can supplement disadvantage of gage because they represent the average response of whole section. In particular, the effective strain can provide rupture strain conservatively, which can be utilized in practice, when the value obtained by strain gage was not effective due to gage damage or abnormal gage readings near ultimate load. This value provides a value that can be used even when partial rupture has occurred and is reasonably useful for specimens with strain distribution.

  • The collision behaviors of the tripod and jacket structures, which are considered as support structures for offshore wind towers at the Southwest sea of Korea, were compared by nonlinear dynamic analysis. These structures, designed for the 3 MW capacity of the wind towers, were modeled using shell elements with nonlinear behaviors, and the tower structure including the nacelle, was modeled by beam and mass elements with elastic materials. The mass of the tripod structure was approximately 1.66 times that of the jacket structure. A barge and commercial ship were modeled as the collision vessel. To consider the tidal conditions in the region, the collision levels were varied from -3.5 m to 3.5 m of the mean sea level. In addition, the collision behaviors were evaluated as increasing the minimum collision energy at the collision speed (=2.6 m/s) of each vessel by four times, respectively. Accordingly, the plastic energy dissipation ratios of the vessel were increased as the stiffness of collision region. The deformations in the wind tower occurred from vibration to collapse of conditions. The tripod structure demonstrated more collision resistance than the jacket structure. This is considered to be due to the concentrated centralized rigidity and amount of steel utilized.

  • NbC, HfC, TaC, and their solid solution ceramics have been identified as the best materials for ultrahigh-temperature ceramics. However, their structural stability and elastic properties are mostly unclear. Thus, we investigated structure and elastic properties of (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C solid solutions via ab initio calculations. Our calculated results show that the stability of (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C increases with the increase of Hf and Ta content, and (Nb1-xHfx)C is more stable than (Nb1-xTax)C at the same content of Hf and Ta. The lattice constants decrease with increasing of Hf and Ta content. (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C carbides are mechanically stable and brittle. Bulk modulus of (Nb1-xTax)C increases with increasing Ta content. In contrast, bulk modulus of (Nb1-xHfx)C decreases with increasing Hf content. Hardness of solid solutions shows the highest values at the (Nb0.25Ta0.75)C and (Nb0.75Hf0.25)C. In particular, (Nb0.75Hf0.25)C shows the highest hardness for the current system. The results indicate that the overall mechanical properties of (Nb1-xHfx)C solid solutions are superior to those of (Nb1-xTax)C solid solutions. Therefore, controlling the Hf and Ta element and content of the (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C Solid solution is crucial for optimizing the material properties.

  • The passive surface wave method measures seismic signals from ambient noises or vibrations of natural phenomena without using an artificial source. Since passive sources are usually in lower frequencies than artificial ones being able to ensure the information on deeper geological structures, the passive surface wave method can investigate deeper geological structures. In the passive method, frequency dispersion curves are obtained after data acquisition, and the dispersion curves are analyzed by assuming 1D-layered earth, which is like the method of active surface wave survey. However, when computing dispersion curves, the passive method first obtains and analyzes coherence curves of received signals from a set of receivers based on spatial autocorrelation. In this review, we explain how passive surface wave methods measure signals, and make data processing and interpretation, before analyzing field application cases.
