  • Flexible pavement responses to vehicular loading, such as critical stresses and strains, in each pavement layer, could be predicted by the multilayered elastic analysis. However, multilayered elastic theory suffers from major drawbacks including spatial dimension of a numerical model, material properties considered in the analysis, boundary conditions, and ill-presentation of tire-pavement contact shape and stresses. To overcome these shortcomings, three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) models are developed and numerical analyses are conducted to calculate pavement responses to moving load in this study. This paper introduces a methodology for an effective 3D FE to simulate flexible pavement structure. It also discusses the mesh development and boundary condition analysis. Sensitivity analyses of flexible pavement response to loading are conducted. The infinite boundary conditions and time-dependent history of calculated pavement responses are considered in the analysis. This study found that the outcome of 3D FE implicit dynamic analysis of flexible pavement that utilizes appropriate boundary conditions, continuous moving load, viscoelastic hot-mix asphalt model is comparable to field measurements.

  • This paper presents two-dimensional boundary value problems of the stress-based gradient elasticity within the smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) framework. Gradient elasticity is introduced to address the limitations of classical elasticity, particularly its struggle to capture size-dependent mechanical behavior at the micro/nano scale. The Ru-Aifantis theorem is employed to overcome the challenges of high-order differential equations in gradient elasticity. This theorem effectively splits the original equation into two solvable second-order differential equations, enabling its incorporation into the S-FEM framework. The present method utilizes a staggered scheme to solve the boundary value problems. This approach efficiently separates the calculation of the local displacement field (obtained over each smoothing domain) from the non-local stress field (computed element-wise). A series of numerical tests are conducted to investigate the influence of the internal length scale, a key parameter in gradient elasticity. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in smoothing stress concentrations typically observed at crack tips and dislocation lines.

  • The main objective of this paper is to analyze the rectangular stiffened plates with two opposite ends elastically restrained and the others simply supported subjected to in-plane bending by Finite Element Method. Another objective is to develope Classical Method analyzing the unstiffened rectangular plates with the above boundary conditions. In order to validate finite element and classical methods, the buckling strengths of the rectangular plates with four simply supported ends, and with two simply supported and the others fixed ends by finite element method and classical method are compared with those of references. In finite element method, elastically restrained ends can be obtained as considering torsional and warping rigidities of end stiffeners. The buckling strengths of the rectangular plates with elastically restrained ends by finite element and classical methods are calculated and compared with each other. In case of stiffened plates, to validate finite element method, the buckling strengths of the rectangular stiffened plates with four simply supported ends, and with two simply supported and the others fixed ends are also compared with those of references. The buckling strengths of the rectangular stiffened plates with elastically restrained ends by finite element method are calculated as solving eigenvalue problems which are obtained as assembling rectangular plate elements and beam elements considered torsional and warping rigidities. The buckling strengths of rectangular stiffened plates according to various positions of rectangular intermediate stiffener, J and I/sub w/ of end stiffeners are also obtained, which are compared to determine the efficient position of intermediate stiffener.

  • The flexural behavior of HSB plate girder with a non-slender web, due to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling, under uniform bending was investigated by the nonlinear finite element analysis. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from SM570-TMC, HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. The flanges and web of selected noncomposite I-girders were modeled as thin shell elements and the geometrical and material nonlinear finite element analysis was performed by the ABAQUS program. The steel was assumed as an elasto-plastic strain hardening material. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were taken into account and their effects on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. The flexural strengths of selected sections obtained by the finite element analysis were compared with the nominal flexural strengths from KHBDC LSD, AASHTO LRFD, and Eurocode and the applicability of these codes in predicting the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of HSB plate girders with a non-slender web was assessed.

  • In this paper, a hybrid technique is presented. First, the isochromatic fringe data of a given set of points are calculated by the finite element method and are used as input data in complex variable formulations. Then the numerical model of the specimen with a central inclined crack is transformed from the physical plane to the complex plane by conformal mapping. The stress field is analyzed and the mixed-mode stress intensity factors are calculated for this complex plane. The stress intensity factors are calculated by the finite element method as well as by a theoretical method and compared with each other. In order to conveniently compare these values with each other, both actual and regenerated photoelastic fringe patterns are multiplied by a factor of two and sharpened by digital image processing.

  • A powerful and efficient method for finding approximate solutions to initial-boundary-value problems in the transient coupled thermoelasticity is formulated in time domain using the finite element technique with time-marching strategy. The final system equations can be derived by the Guritin's variational principle using the definition of convolution integral. But, the finite element formulation for the equations of motion is modified by differentiating in time. Numerical results to some test problems are compared with analytical and other sophisticated approximate solutions. Stable responces are observed in all the given examples irrespective of incremental time steps and mesh shapes. In addition, it is shown that good numerical results are obtained even in coarser mesh or larger time step comparing to other numerical methods.

  • In this study, the equivalent elastic modulus of flexible textile composites was predicted by nonlinear finite element analysis. The analysis was carried out considering the material nonlinearity of fiber tows and the geometrical nonlinearity during large deformation using commercial analysis software, ABAQUS. To account for the geometrical nonlinearity due to the large shear deformation of fiber tows, a user defined material algorithm was developed and inserted in ABAQUS. In results, nonlinear stress-strain curve for the flexible textile composites under uni-axial tension was predicted from which effective elastic modulus was obtained and compared to the test result. The effective elastic moduli were calculated for the various finite element models with different waviness ratio of fiber tow.

  • Inelastic nonlinear behavior of a hyperbolic cooling tower under wind loading is studied using a finite element program developed on a Cray Y-MP. Convergence studies for the elastic and inelastic analyses are performed using three mesh models. It is shown that the mesh convergence plays an important role in accurately predicting the inelastic behavior of a cooling tower. Even though the cooling tower resists the applied forces through membrane stresses, it is found that the bending stresses play an important role in the failure and behavior of the cooling tower. The present analysis gives a shape factor of 1.48, which indicates a significant redistribution of meridional stresses. It is further evidenced by the distribution of meridional reinforcement yielding which reaches up to $30^{\circ}$ from the windward meridian. The present practice of using elastic analysis for calculating the design stresses appears to be at least safe and conservative. A more comprehensive study should lead to conclusions that would allow use of a higher-than-one shape factor, thus requiring less meridional reinforcement than the present design method does.
