  • Crack-controlled method which utilizes the dynamic energy such as explosives and propellent gases have been applied to the development of mineral resource and oil and civil engineering. It is necessary to consider the fracture processes associated with the material properties and external forces to control crack propagation using borehole pressure. To investigate the influence of the applied borehole pressure waveform on the crack propagation in rock masses having different material properties, a no-free surface model was used, consisting of a borehole in rock with a continuous boundary. Loading rates ranging from 1 to 100MPa/${\mu}s$ with different rock mass properties was employed to investigate the loading rate dependency of fracture patterns in the rock mass.

  • This paper presents the tensile characteristics for carbon/epoxy, carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites under elevated temperature, which are considered for vehicle structure or thermal protection materials. The tensile test was conducted with servo-hydraulic testing machine and high temperature furnace, and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio were evaluated by using high temperature strain gages. Also, they were compared each other with respect to fiber orientation and temperature effect. These test results were used for designing and analyzing some airframe structures with these composites.

  • A Green's function approach is adopted for analyzing the thermoelastic deformations and stresses of a plate made of functionally graded materials(FGMs). The solution to the 3-dimensional unsteady temperature is obtained by using the laminate theory. The fundamental equations for thermoelastic problems are derived in terms of out-plane deformation and in-plane force, separately. The thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions due to the bending and in-plane forces are analyzed by using a Green's function based on the Galerkin method. The eigenfunctions of the Galerkin Green's function for the thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions are approximated in terms of a series of admissible functions that satisfy the homogeneous boundary conditions of the rectangular plate. Numerical analysis for a simply supported plate is carried out and effects of material properties on unsteady thermoclastic behaviors are discussed.

  • An inverse self-iterative procedure is developed to estimate layer moduli of 3 layered flexible pavement structures from FWD deflection basins. The theoretical deflection basins of pavement structures obtained by full factorial design are used for the parametric study on the characteristics of deflection basins and the regression analysis. The factorial design is performed for asphalt pavement structures with stabilized base layer and granular base layer, respectively. The initially assumed layer moduli by regression equations and relations between the rate of change of moduli and deflections are used in the procedure to ensure efficiency and accuracy of self-iterative model. The SINELA computer program is used for inverse self-iterative applications to determine theoretical responses. The computer program of this procedure is coded for personal computers and is verified through numerical model tests.

  • In many countries including Korea, the design concept of pavement structure has been converted from empirical method to mechanisticempirical method since the advent of compaction control based on resilient modulus proposed by AASHTO in 1986. Studies of last decades indicates that the classical compaction control method based on relative compaction and plate bearing test(PBT) will necessarily move to the methods taking advantage of light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD) and dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP) in addition to PBT. In this study, the validity of resilient modulus prediction equation proposed by Korean Pavement Design Guide is verified by comparison with physical properties of subgrade soil and the results of structural analysis. In addition, correlational equations between elastic modulus measured by various field tests and resilient modulus estimated by empirical model are proposed. Finally, a field test-based compaction control procedure for subgrade is suggested by using proposed correlational equations.

  • The large scale shaker can be employed to measure linear and nonlinear shear moduli of soils in situ as a function of shear strain. The method involves applying dynamic loads on a surface foundation measuring the dynamic response of the soil mass beneath the foundation with embedded instrumentation. This paper focuses on the development of a framework of the inverse analysis for the interpretation of test data to estimate linear and nonlinear shear moduli of soils along with the necessity of the inverse analysis. The suggested framework is based on the nonlinear least squares but it uses two iterative loops to account for the nonlinear behavior of soil that sensors are not located. The validity of the suggested inversion framework is tested through a series of numerical parametric studies. An example use of the suggested inversion framework is also shown. Because the field condition may affect the accuracy of suggested method, it is important to conduct a preliminary inverse analysis to quantify the discrepancy between the estimated modulus and the baseline.

  • The stiffness of the subbase materials is represented by the resilient modulus, $M_R$, which are very important properties in the mechanistic design of flexible pavement system. However, the cyclic $M_R$ testing method is too complex, expensive, and time consuming to be applicable on a production basis. In this study, the alternative $M_R$ testing technique for subbase materials was developed using a free-free resonant column (FF-RC) test considering deformational characteristics of subbase materials. To estimate the deformational characteristics of subbase materials, effects of strain amplitude and mean effective stress on modulus of subbase materials were investigated. The $M_R$ values determined by alternative testing procedures matched well with those determined by standard $M_R$ test, showing the capability of the proposed methods being used in determining $M_R$ values.

  • The ground of Taegu area consists mainly of shales with elastic sedimentary rocks. These shales have a nonhomogeneous and anisotropic characteristics. So their physical and mechanical properties are very different due to the angles($\beta$ value) of bedding planes of sedimentary rock. In this study, the physical and mechanical characteristics of shales in Taegu area are studied by performing all kinds of rock test. According to results of test, apparent specific gravity of shale decreases as the $\beta$ value increases. On the contrary, porosity and absorption increase. Elastic wave velocity shorts the highest value at the $90^{\circ}$. And Young's modulus shows the maximum value at the $30^{\circ}$. The uniaxial strength, triaxial strength, cohesion and angle of friction show the minimum value at the $60^{\circ}$respectively.

  • The cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures is generally evaluated by measuring a single parameter (i.e., Tensile strength, Stiffness). However, the use of a single parameter has been questioned in the evaluation of asphalt mixture cracking performance. The focus of this study was to clearly identify the key properties and characteristics associated with the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Results of fracture, creep, and strength tests at multiple loading rates performed on the modified and unmodified mixtures showed that the mixture cracking resistance was primarily affected by the rate of micro-damage accumulation. This was reflected in the m-value, without affecting the fracture energy limit. It was also observed that the short loading time (elastic) stiffness alone could not differentiate the mixture cracking resistance of the mixtures. It was concluded that the key to characterize the cracking resistance of asphalt mixture is in the evaluation of the combined effects of creep and failure limits. It was also found that a residual dissipated energy parameter measured from Superpave IDT strength test gave the quick and useful way to distinguish the difference of cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Failure strain in the longer-term creep test appeared to be a useful parameter for evaluating the combined effects of creep and failure limits of asphalt mixtures.

  • In this paper, mechanical property of biomorphic C/SiC composite was calculated by unit cell analysis. The microstructural arrangements of carbonized pine and radiata pine which were impregnated with silicon, were idealized as square and hexagonal arrays. Unit cell was then defined and equivalent elastic constants were calculated. A single and double unit cell structures were considered. The effect of void distribution was also studied by monte carlo simulation.
