  • Polarization filtering based on the multicomponent complex trace analysis method is performed to reject Rayleigh waves and to enhance S waves. To test the polarization filter, synthetic seismic data were constructed for a simple two-layer model based on the finite difference method. Rayleigh waves with elliptic motion are eliminated effectively and P and S waves with linear motions are well separated each other.

  • The bright spot is an indicator for natural gas on seismic stack sections, but it is also shown on layers where the acoustic impedance contrast is large. In order to distinguish sharply between gas and impedance contrast we need additional detailed data processing such as velocity analysis, AVO analysis and seismic complex analysis including measures of seismic amplitude, frequency, and phase. In this study, we performed detailed velocity analysis, complex analysis and DHI (Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator) analysis which is the result of amplitude variation according to the incident angles. The seismic complex analysis gives us the geological information which depends on geophysical properties at the interest layer. For the complex analysis, we computed several seismic attributes such as the instantaneous amplitude, the first and the second derivatives of the instantaneous amplitude, the instantaneous phase, the instantaneous frequency and weighted average instantaneous frequency. Then we applied these analysis techniques to a seismic data of Korea offshore which had been logged. From the result of this data analysis, it could be said that high possibility area for gas layer detection has amplitude anomalies in the instantaneous amplitude, the instantaneous frequency and the DHI section resulting from the AVO analysis. If there are not any other anomalies in detailed data processing, it will have low possibility for gas layer detection.

  • In order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in multi-component seismic data, we developed new polarization filters based on the method of multicomponent complex trace analysis. Unlike the previous polarization filters, the present filters separately compute linear and elliptic components at each time sample using amplitude ratio of horizontal and vertical components of body waves and ellipticity of Rayleigh waves. The polarization filters work ideally even with low S/N data. Application of the filters to both synthetic and real seismic data shows that Rayleigh waves of elliptic motions are effectively eliminated and both P and S waves of linear motions are well separated each other.

  • Gas hydrate has been paid attention to study for because: 1) it can be considered as a new energy resources; 2) one of reasons causing the instability of sea floor slope and 3) a factor to the climate change. Bottom simulating reflector (BSR) defined as seismic boundary between the gas hydrate and free gas zone has been considered as the most common evidence in the seismic reflection data for the gas hydrate exploration. BSR has several characteristics such as parallel to the sea bottom, high amplitude, reducing interval velocity between above and below BSR and reversing phase to the sea bottom. Moreover, instantaneous attribute properties such as amplitude envelop, instantaneous frequency, phase and first derivative of amplitude of seismic data from the complex analysis could be used to analyze properties of BSR those would be added to the certain properties of BSR in order to effectively find out the existence of BSR of the gas hydrate stability zone. The output of conventional seismic data processing for gas hydrate data set in Ulleung basin in the East sea of Korea will be used for complex analyses to indicate better BSR in the seismic reflection data. This result of this analysis implies that the BSR of the analyzed seismic profile is clearly located at the two ways time (TWT) of around 3.1 seconds.

  • In order to investigate in-line ground motions caused by earthquakes, we examine the multicomponent complex trace analysis method (MCTAM) for the synthetic data and apply it to real earthquake data. An experimental result for synthetic data gives correct information on the arrival times, duration of individual phases, and approaching angles for body waves. Rayleigh waves are also easily identified with the MCTAM. A deep earthquake with magnitude of 7.3 was chosen to test various polarization attributes of ground motions. For P waves, instantaneous phase difference between the vertical and the in-line horizontal components ${\phi}(t)$, instantaneous reciprocal ellipticity ${\rho}(t)$, and approaching angle ${\tau}(t)$ are computed to be ${\pm}180^{\circ},\;0{\sim}0.25,\;and\;-30^{\circ}{\sim}-45^{\circ}$, respectively. For S waves, ${\phi}(t)$ tends to vary while ${\rho}(t)$ have values of $0{\sim}0.3\;and\;{\tau}(t)$ remains near vertical, respectively. A relatively low frequency signal registered just prior to the S wave event is interpreted as a P-wave phase based on its polarization characteristics. Velocities of P and S waves are computed to be 8.633 km/s and 4.762 km/s, and their raypath parameters 0.074 s/km and 0.197 s/km. Dynamic Poisson's ratio is obtained as 0.281 from the velocities of P and S waves.

  • Gas hydrate is ice-like crystalline lattice, formed at appropriate temperature and pressure, in which gas molecules are trapped. It is worldwide popular interesting subject as a potential energy. In korea, a seismic survey for gas hydrate have performed over the East sea by the KIGAM since 1997. In this paper, we had conducted numerical and physical modeling experiments for seismic properties on gas hydrate with field data which had been acquired over the East sea in 1998. We used a finite difference seismic method with staggered grid for 2-D elastic wave equation to generate synthetic seismograms from multi-channel surface seismic survey, OBC(Ocean Bottom Cable) and VSP(Vertical Seismic Profiling). We developed the seismic physical modeling system which is simulated in the deep sea conditions and acquired the physical model data to the various source-receiver geometry. We carried out seismic complex analysis with the obtained data. In numerical and physical modeling data, we observed the phase reversal phenomenon of reflection wave at interface between the gas hydrate and free gas. In seismic physical modeling, seismic properties of the modeling material agree with the seismic velocity estimated from the travel time of reflection events. We could easily find out AVO(Amplitude Versus Offset) in the reflection strength profile through seismic complex analysis.

  • According to the measured results of KTX brake squeal noise in this study, high level brake noise occurred in a wide frequency range, 100~18,000Hz. To identify the sources of the brake squeal noise, unstable vibration modes due to brake disc/pad interaction were analyzed under various conditions by the finite element method. Complex eigenvalues for a brake unit with a disc and four pads were obtained. It was found that the real parts of the complex eigenvalues, that is, unstable vibration modes, were closely related to friction coefficients, pressure on the brake cylinders, elastic moduli of the components, and other conditions.

  • Recently, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys have been actively employed to obtain a large amount of data on occurrences such as ground subsidence and road safety. However, considering the cost and time efficiency, more intuitive and accurate interpretation methods are required, as interpreting a whole survey data set is a cost-intensive process. For this purpose, GPR data can be subjected to attribute analysis, which allows quantitative interpretation. Among the seismic attributes that have been widely used in the field of exploration, complex trace analysis and similarity are the most suitable methods for analyzing GPR data. Further, recently proposed attributes such as edge detecting and texture attributes are also effective for GPR data analysis because of the advances in image processing. In this paper, as a reference for research on the attribute analysis of GPR data, we introduce the useful attributes for GPR data and describe their concepts. Further, we present an analysis of the interpretation methods based on the attribute analysis and past cases.
