  • The elastic constants, C', of $Th_{3}P_4$-type structure compounds, $La_{3}S_4\;and\;Ce_{3}S_4$, have been analyzed on the basis of band Jahn-Teller mechanism. The distinct difference between two compounds lies in the fact that $Ce^{3+}$ ion has a f electron which produces magnetism. It is shown that the band Jahn-Teller effect is sensitively influenced by the energy splitting of f electronic bands by a cubic crystal field in $Ce_{3}S_4$, and f electrons suppress the elastic softening effect. The energy splitting value obtained from the calculation of elastic constants is found to agree well with the experimental value obtained from the magnetic susceptibility measurement.

  • This paper discusses the homogenization method to determine effective average elastic constants of a linear structure by considering its microstructure. A detailed description on the homogenization method is given for the linear elastic material and then the finite element approximation is performed for an investigation of elastic properties. An asymptotic expansion is carried out in the cross-section area, or in the unit cell. Two and three lay-up structures made up of individual isotropic constituents are chosen for numerical examples to check discrepancies between results generated by this theoretical development and the conventional approach. Asymptotic characteristics of the process in extracting the stiffness of structure locally formed by spatial repetitions yield underestimated values of stiffness. These discrepancies are detected by the asymptotic corrective term which is ascribed to considerations of microscopic perturbations and proved in the finite element formulation. The asymptotic analysis is the more reasonable in analysing the composite material, rather than the conventional approach to calculate the macroscopic average for elastic properties.

  • This study presents a non -prismatic beam element for modeling the elastic and inelastic behavior of the steel beam, which has the post-Northridge connections in steel moment frames that are subjected to earthquake ground motions. The elastic stiffness matrix for non-prismatic members with reduced beam section (RES) connection is in the closed-form. The plasticity model is of a discrete type and is composed of a series of nonlinear hinges connected by rigid links. The hardening rules can model the inelastic behavior for monotonic and random cyclic loading, and the effects of local buckling. Verification and calibration of the model are presented in a companion paper.

  • The range of stresses experienced in subgrade soils and subbase materials in pavement under working stress conditions is below about 150㎪. Therefore, the deformational characteristics of soils at low confining pressures are important properties in the analysis and design of pavement system. Subgrade soils and subbase materials were collected from the actual pavement projects for testing. To evaluate the effect of confining pressure on modulus of those materials at low confining pressures, RC and FFRC tests were performed. Interestingly, the relationship between modulus of soils and confining pressure is more appropriate in linear space than in logarithm space at low confining pressure. Based on those results, new model fur evaluating the effects of confining pressure on modulus at low confining pressures was proposed.

  • In the analysis of dynamic problem, determination of mazimun shear modulus is essential for the estimation of shear stress at any strain level. Although many models for silica sands were presented, the direct accomodation of those models to crushable sand would be difficult because of crushability during torsion. In this research dynamic behaviour of tested sand is presented. The shear modulus of loose crushable sand shows similar results to silica sand. However, as the density of crushable sand increases the shear modulus decreases because of crushability by increasing surface contact area. And modulus number is expressed in terms of state parameter by Been and Jefferies (1965).

  • Considering the effects of confining pressure, initial shear stress, cyclic stress ratio and number of loading cycles, cyclic triaxial tests are carried out to clarify the soil dynamic properties such as shear modulus and value of material damping of clay under undrained cyclic loading conditions. The results show that no obvious dependency on initial shear stress and effective confining stress are recognized in the shear modulus and damping ratio plotted versus strain. However, the shear modulus decreases and the damping ratio increases with increasing axial strain. When compared with others, it is also revealed that the shear moduli are distributed within the range curves obtained using empirical equations derived by Marcuson et al. (3) and Kokusho et al. (4), and damping ratios are distributed between the curves obtained by Kokusho et al. (4) and Ishihara et al. (9).
