A Study of Thermo-structural Analysis and Fatigue Analysis for Independent Type-B LNG Fuel Tank (독립형 B타입 LNG 연료 탱크의 열-구조 연성해석 및 피로 해석에 관한 연구)

  • With the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020 and by 50 percent by 2050 from their 2005 level, International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulated the emissions of SOx and NOx by setting the emission control area in 2012. Since these environmental regulations have been reinforced, demands for the LNG fuel ships are expected to increase dramatically. Accordingly, the worldwide shipbuilding companies spur the development of the LNG fueled ships. Therefore, it is essential to carry out the research on the development of LNG fuel tank, which is one of the important components of the LNG fuel supply system. In this study, the deliberate finite element analysis of type-B LNG fuel tank for 10,000 TEU containership was carried out to evaluate structural safety and provide the process for analyzing stress levels and evaluating fatigue life of target structural. In particular, thermo-structural analysis and fatigue analysis were carried out using the databases on materials and structures of LNG fuel tank.

  • 1. LPG 온풍기는 용량 16$\times$$10^4$ ㎉ 건타입가스버너, 연소부 및 열교환부, 6개의 50kgLPG탱크와 자동절체기, 가스메타, 배관으로 구성하였다. LPG 온풍기의 이론연소효율은 91%, $CO_2$ 배출량은 11.74%, CO배출량은 0ppm, 과잉공기비는 1.16, 배기가스온도는 253$^{\circ}C$, 온풍온도는 8$0^{\circ}C$로서 우수한 성능으로 나타났다. 2. LPG온풍기에서 배출되는 배기가스중의 $CO_2$ 를 온실로 공급하기 위하여 $CO_2$ 공급기를 제작하여 배출가스연도에 부착하였다. $CO_2$ 공급기는 흡입형 시로코팬(1200㎥/h)과 차단문으로 이루어졌다. 1-2W형 300평 온실내의 $CO_2$ 농도를 1000ppm으로 올리기 위해서는 $CO_2$ 공급기를 약 1시간 정도 운전시켜야 할 것으로 판단되었다. 3. LPG온풍기와 경유온풍기의 경제성 비교분석에 의하면 현 시점의 경유 가격 242원, LP가스 가격 435원을 기준으로 연간소요비용은 각각 5,392,430원, 5,299,917원으로 경유온풍기가 10만원 정도 경제적이지만 탄산가스 시용비용, 탄산가스 공급으로 인한 작물의 수량증대 및 고품질 생산물을 고려한다면 LPG온풍기 사용이 더 경제적이라 사료된다.

  • One of the main methods of building LNG tankers uses the Moss spherical tank design since it can be precisely analyzed with respect to reliability and safety of construction by stress analysis. Aluminum alloy 5083 is generally used in the Moss spherical tank design for the wall in constructing the LNG tanker. This aluminum alloy does not have low temperature brittleness, but has good corrosion resistance, good weldability, and excellent material properties for the application. The Moss spherical tank is constructed with several sections of A5083 thick plate with curved surfaces, which are welded together. It is essential to predict the amount of springback for the deformed thick plates in design to insure a reliable construction because the structure needs to be assembled into a perfect sphere. Unless the initial construction meets the design, there are additional processing costs for reworking to meet the specifications as well as a cost penalty paid to a consumer. In this paper, FE analyses were conducted to predict the amount of springback for various forming conditions and forming processes. The various forming processes were evaluated with respect to reducing springback and compared with the conventional forming process used for curved surfaces of thick Al plate.

  • Hydrogen is attracting attention as an alternative energy source as an eco-friendly fuel without emitting environmental pollutants. In order to use hydrogen as an energy source, technologies such as hydrogen production and storage must be used, and new storage methods are being studied. In this study, the behavior of hydrogen in the storage tank were numerically studied under high-pressure hydrogen discharge conditions in a Type III hydrogen tank. Numerical results were compared with the experimental value and the results were quantitatively analyzed to verify the numerical implementation. With the results of pressure and temperature values under a given discharge condition, the Redich-Kwong gas model showed the adequate models with the smallest error between numerical and experimental results.

Effects of the aspect ratio and inlet velocity on the thermal stratification in a diffuser type seasonal thermal storage tank (디퓨저 타입 계간 축열조 내부 열성층화에 대한 입구 유속 및 탱크 종횡비 영향 연구)

  • In this study, the thermal stratification in solar seasonal thermal storage tanks was numerically simulated. The effects of the aspect ratio (AR) and inlet velocity on the thermal stratification in the diffuser type heat storage tank were investigated. The temperature distributions inside the tank were similar with velocity fields. Jet flows from opposite diffusers encountered each other at the tank center region. Thereafter, the downward flows occurred, and this flows strongly affected the thermal stratification. When AR was smaller than 2, these downward flows influenced a further distance and enhanced mixing inside the tank. Thermal stratification was evaluated by thermocline thickness and degree of stratification, and AR of 3 had the highest degree of stratification. The inlet velocity effect was expressed with the ratio (Re/Ri) of Reynolds and Richardson numbers. The second-order approximation was found for the relationship between the thermocline thickness and log Re/Ri.

  • With continuous emission of environmental pollutants and an increase in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, demand to seek other types of energy sources, alternative energy, was needed. Hydrogen, an eco-friendly energy, is attracting attention as the ultimate alternative energy medium. Hydrogen storage technology has been studied diversely to utilize hydrogen energy. In this study, the gas behavior of hydrogen in the storage tank was numerically examined under charge conditions for the Tpe III hydrogen tank. Numerical results were compared with the experimental results to verify the numerical implementation. In the results of pressure and temperature values under charge condition, the Realizable k-ε model and Reynold stress model were quantitatively matched with the smallest error between numerical and experimental results.

  • In this study, designing of a Type 4 pressure vessel using the filament winding method was conducted. In order to prevent leakage in consideration of the design of the hydrogen storage tank, a liner was designed by applying high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and the composite structure was designed by stacking carbon/epoxy in the hoop and helical directions. As a theoretical approach, the angle of the helical fiber and fiber thickness of each hoop and helix were designed. The safety of the design was verified using the commercial software ANSYS.

  • The optimization of submerged culture conditions for mycelial growth and exopolysaccharide (EPS) production in an edible mushroom Tremella fuciformis were studied in shake flasks and bioreactors. The temperature of $28^{\circ}C$ and pH 8 in the beginning of fermentation in agitated flasks was the most efficient condition to obtain maximum mycelial biomass and EPS. The optimal medium constituents were as follows (g l-1): glucose 20, tryptone 2, $KH_2PO_4$ 0.46, $K_2HPO_4$ 1 and $MgSO_4H_2O$ 0.5. The fungus was cultivated under various agitation and aeration conditions in a 5L stirred-tank bioreactor. The maximum cell mass and EPS production were obtained at a relatively high agitation speed of 200 rpm and at an aeration rate of 2 vvm. The flow behavior of the fermentation broth was Newtonian and the maximum apparent viscosity (35 cP) was observed at a highly aerated condition (2 vvm). The EPS productivity in an airlift reactor was higher than that in the stirred-tank reactor. The EPS was protein-bound polysaccharides consisted of mainly mannose, xylose, and fructose. The molecular weights of EPS were determined to be $1.3{\sim}1.5{\times}10^6$.

A Study on the Boil-Off Rate Prediction of LNG Cargo Containment Filled with Insulation Powders (단열 파우더를 채용한 LNGCC의 BOR예측에 관한 연구)

  • A BOR(Boil-Off Rate) prediction model for the NO96 membrane-type LNG insulation containment filled with superlite powders during laden voyage is presented in this paper. Finite element model for the unsteady-state heat transfer analysis is constructed by considering the air and water conditions and by employing the homogenization method to simplify the complex insulation material composition. BOR is evaluated in terms of the total amount of heat invaded into LNGCC and its variation to the major variables is investigated by the parametric heat transfer analysis. Based upon the parametric results, a BOR prediction model which is in function of the LNG tank size, the insulation layer thickness and the powder thermal conductivity is derived. Through the verification experiment, the accuracy of the derived prediction model is justified such that the maximum relative difference is less than 1% when compared with the direct numerical estimation using the FEM analysis.

  • To lunch the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), the second launch complex will be constructed on the Naro Space Center and Kerosene Filling System (KFS) will be also installed newly. KFS of KSLV-II launch complex system is being designed based on Naro Launch Complex. But this must supply fuel to fuel tanks of the vehicle with only a supply pump because KSLV-II is a 3-stage launch vehicle unlike Naro Launch Vehicle or Test Launch Vehicle (TLV). A sudden rise of pump output pressure is recognized during fuel filling scenario selection process. This occurs because return flow can not actively deal with a lot of flow change using flow control method of orifice type. To solve this problem, it is verified that fuel can be stably supplied by installation of accumulator and an appropriate adjustment of filling mode change sequence through flow analysis of various cases.
