  • Recently, Townhouse has emerged as a blue ocean of real estate market in Korea. In designing town houses, which are luxurious suburban houses centered around the capital area, the construction companies are using 'designer marketing' in which they hire interior designers and architects and express various styles of design in the interior space of the town houses. Therefore, this study examined the unit-family cases of Korean townhouses and analyzed the expression characteristics of design in the interior space of the town houses built after 2000 in terms of their spatial, morphological, material, and color aspect. "The extensibility of space" and "variableness of space" seem to have the same meaning, but they turned out to be not related to each other due to the particularity of houses. "The extensibility of space" turned out to show its characteristics via "the use of transparent materials." "Minimal form" utilizes the unified "achromatic and simple colors" to emphasize the simplicity and in some cases, highlights the use of original colors. The interior space of the townhouses expresses the traditional or heterosexual oriental image through "the use of natural materials," and they point out the "oriental form" through the controlled beauty expressed by using oriental components and "achromatic and simple colors."

The healing method of residents through nature was classified into physical and psychological healing through openness, familiarity, comfort, and stability. Second, as an expression method according to townhouse planning, the arrangement plan induced active communication with nature through the arrangement according to topography and a common garden. In terms of construction plan, a bigger window or door than that of other residential spaces was installed on a wall, ceiling or opening to directly bring the nature of outside visually for more communication. Third, with regard to healing methods of townhouse, 'openness' which reduces depression and increases self-esteem, expands the view of residents. • British housing types began with detached houses using wood based on early Germanic cultures, and gradually divided into multi-story houses such as terraces houses, with the influx of houses using stone from Latin cultures influenced by France. Today, various types of housing types such as detached houses, townhouses, and apartments are mixed, and their origins can be found in housing types that have continued from the past. Housing types existing in the UK continue their context through this historical development process, but housing types in the UK also have been combined with those of other cultures, leading to modern housing types. In this paper, we examine the process of the UK's peculiar development of housing types superimposed with the recurring motion to the traditional European urban structures prior to the industrial revolution during contemporary years, and perimeter block collective housings of today; then, we study the process of applying the UK case as a concept of practical design and planning in order to continuously consider Korea's modern urban structure and corresponding types of housing. Through this process, we explore the identity of the housing type in Korea, which is pursuing fundamental changes in residential culture beyond quantitative housing supply in the process of rapid urbanization.
