Methanol extracts of aquatic plants were analyzed for allelopathic activities against Escherichia coli JM109 and $Microcystis$$aeruginosa$ UTEX2385 which were compared to its 2,2-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities. The radical scavenging activities were detected from the extracts of $Persicaria$$thunbergii$, $Persicaria$$amphibia$, $Trapa$$japonica$, $Myriophyllum$$spicatum$, and $Brasenia$$schreberi$. Also, the inhibitory activities against cyanobacteria were analyzed according to the order of $B.$$schreberi$, $T.$$japonica$, $P.$$amphibia$, and $M.$$spicatum$. Most of the extracts from aquatic plants did not show any inhibition against $E.$$coli$ except $B.$$schreberi$. We found a positive correlation between the antioxidental activities of methanol extract of aquatic plants and the growth inhibitory activities for cyanobacteria in terms of the DPPH radical scavenging activities ($R^2$=0.381, $P$ <0.0001). The inhibitory activities of methanol extract against $E.$$coli$ growth was not correlated with the other activities of aquatic plants ($P$ >0.04). We suggest from this study that the allelopathic effects of aquatic plants against cyanobacteria could be screened by using the bioassay based on DPPH.
This study was conducted to evaluate the allelopathic effect of aqueous extract of Ganghwa domestic mugwort (Artemisia spp.) on vegetables and its related allelo-chemicals. When the receptor vegetables, such as Chinese cabbage, lettuce, and red radish, were treated with aqueous extract obtained from Sajabalssuk (A. $sp^*I$), Ssajuarissuk (A. $sp^*II$) or Ssajarissuk (A. $sp^*III$), their germination rate, leaf number, plant height, and root length were restricted with increasing concentration of aqueous extract. Allelopathic effect was the highest in radish, than lettuce and Chinese cabbage in order. The growth of topplant were more inhibited then root growth observing in restriction of plant height, root length, and chlorophyll contents. The plant height, the root length of red radish were 53.3 and 61.2% and their fresh weights were 19.8 and 26.4% compared to those of controls, respectively. A. $sp^*III$ showed the highest allelopathic effect among the donor plants. In HPLC analysis, 7 phenol compounds were identified in A. $sp^*I$ and A. $sp^*II$, and, in A. $sp^*III$, and hydroxybenzoic acid and phenylacetic acid were further identified as allelochemicals. It is considered that their plant growths were variously inhibited by the amounts and types of allelochemicals in aqueous extracts. To increase the productivity of farm land after cultivation of mugwort, these results can be useful to select the following field crops.
This study was conducted to compare the regeneration of the seedlings under different vegetation types and to identify the presence of allelopathy in Abies koreana(Ak) natural forest in Banyabong Peak(elevation, 1715m), of Mt. Chiri. Twenty quadrats($10m{\times}10m$) were placed in May, 1996 to classify vegetation structure using TWINSPAN. Water-soluble extracts from leaves and soil humus of different vegetation types were collected to test their effects on both seed germination of Ak and mycelial growth of ectomycorrhizal fungi. Phenolic compounds from soil humus were quantified using HPLC. Among the four vegetation types, Sasa borealis(Sb) was found in both Ak-Quercus mongolica(Qm) and Ak-Rhododendron schlippenbachii(Rs) communities. Natural seeding of Ak was $230,000{\pm}90,000seeds/ha$ in 1995 and their germination rate was 25% in an ideal laboratory condition. Density of Ak seedlings less than 5cm in height was 52,000/ha in 1996, while that of seedlings taller than 5cm in height was only 4,000/ha. In the case of Ak-Qm community, density of Ak seedlings with Sb understory was only 7% of the density of seedlings with Rs understary, suggesting the inhibitory effect of Sb. The germination rate of Ak seeds was significantly reduced by leaf extracts of Sb, and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum(Rm) and Ak. Soil humus extract of Ak-Qm-Sb subcommunity reduced germination of Ak seeds by 81% and also reduced by 19% the respiration of mycelia of ectomycorrhizal fumgus, Lactarius sp. Among the seven phenolic compounds identified from the soil humus, extract, Ak-Qm-Sb subcommunity contained significantly high content of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, and syringic acid. Particularly, p-hydroxybenzoic acid was present at 4.2ppm in the Sb roots and at 16.5ppm in the Sb humus, suggesting that it could be the primary allelopathic compound in Abies koreana forests with Sasa borealis understory.
Dried top and root extracts of seven different weed species, fresh top and root extracts, and various concentrations of extract (0, 5, 10 and 15%, W/V) and residue rate (0.0, 0.25. 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0%) of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) were used to study their allelopathic effects on alfalfa in the laboratory and greenhouse. Top and root aqueous extracts of common lambsquarter (Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail (Setaria faberii Herrm), redroot pig-weed (Amaranthus retroflexus L), velvetleaf, large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L), canada thistle (Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed (Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, and vigor in alfalfa. Top growth extracts of weeds exhibited greater allelopathic effects than root extracts. Alfalfa test species, WL-320, responded significantly different to the various weed species extracts in terms of allelopathic effect. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed significant variation with respect to germination percentage. Velvetleaf (b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass (b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa. When compared the activity of fresh velvetleaf extract to that of dry velvetleaf extract, dry extract was more inhibitory to alfalfa germination and seedling growth. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Seedling emergence and survival percentage was inhibited by velvetleaf residue mixture treatment. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried top extracts, as compared to extracts from fresh top and root. These results demonstrate the allelopathic activity of different weed species extracts and suggest that weeds may affect crop growth and development due to the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.

This study was carried out to examine the allelopathic effect of the aqueous extract of Hypochaeris radicata L. on growth of three gramineous forage crops, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass and italian ryegrass. The result on relative elongation ration (RER) of gramineous forage crops treated with the aqueous extract of Hypochaeris radicata L. and the change of quantity generally indicated the inhibitory effect. The inhibitory effect was increased as its concentration was increased. As a result, it is ascertained that the aqueous extract of Hypochaeris radicata L. has allelopathy effect. According to the chemical experiment of the allelochemical substances in Hypochaeris radicata L. by HPLC, there are the differences at each part of plants. However, it is ascertained that there are eleven phenolic compounds, ${\rho}-hydroxybenzoic$ acid, chlorogenic acid, catechin, caffeic acid, syringic acid, salicylic acid, ${\rho}-coumaric$ acid, ferulic acid, hesperidin, trans-cinnamic acid and naringenin. Especially three phenolic acids such as caffeic acid, ferulic acid and naringenin were detected from all part of the plant.
Comparisons of understory vegetation between the burned and the unburned area, and effects of fire on seed germination of Melica onoei, which increased importance value in burned area, were investigated in the black pine forest. The number of plant species in burned and unburned area was 38 and 20, respectively. Melica onoei, indigofera kirilowii, Lespedeza bicolor Miscanthus sinensis were the most abundant species in burned area. A number of seedlings and sprouts of these species were found in burned area. Standing biomass of understory vegetation in burned and unburned area was 88.7g/㎡ and 299.8g/㎡, respectively, in the immediate postfire year. However, standing biomass in burned area increased to 537.2g/㎡ and relative standing biomass of Melica onoei was the highest with a value of 25.7% in the second year Seed germination of Melica onoei in control(C), dark (D), leaf (L), leaf extract (E) treatment was 92.5%, 86.0%, 45.5% and 39.0%, respectively. However, seed germination in L+E and D+L+E treatment was 10.5% and 4.0%, respectively. It is assumed that higher importance value of M. onoei in the postfire vegetation in this study area might be due to the removal of allelopathic inhibitors and the improvement of light condition after fire.
This study was conducted with pot experiment to find out the effect of ginkgo leaf wastes application produced from the pharmaceutical process on the growth and yield of red pepper. Four kinds of ginkgo leaf wastes, the natural dried leaves, the leaves produced from the pharmaceutical process, the dried leaves to remove methanol after the pharmaceutical process, and the leaves washed with water to removal methanol and some activated materials after pharmaceutical process, were treated with two levels of application rates. The growth responses and yield were measured throughout the experimented period. Shoot growth of red pepper was inhibited by all treatment of ginkgo leaf wastes compared to the treatment of NPK and NPK+compost. Red pepper yields were also significantly reduced by treatment of the ginkgo leaf wastes except for the treatment of the water washed ginkgo leaf wastes, 1,000 kg/10a, which showed similar yield to NPK treatment. The major reseon to reduce the growth and yield seemed to be originated from the allelopathic substances of the ginkgo leaves. The organic matter contents of the soil after experiment were slightly increased with the treatment of the ginkgo leaf wastes and compost than that of NPK treatment. Based on these results, this study for using the ginkgo leaf wastes should be done more to utilize the wastes of the pharmaceutical process as a organic fertilizer.

In 2022, the Korean Ministry of Environment designated Parthenium hysterophorus as an ecosystem-disturbing plant. The purpose of this study was to present a management plan for P. hysterophorus considering its distribution, morphological, physiological, and ecological characteristics, and to introduce various control techniques. P. hysterophorus is native to Central America and occurs in about 45 countries worldwide. However, in Korea, it only grows in some areas of Tongyeong and Changwon, Gyeongsangnam Province. P. hysterophorus is an annual plant and spreads by seeds, moves between countries in the process of importing and/or exporting agricultural seeds, and spreads by agricultural machinery and vehicles after introduction. P. hysterophorus releases parthenin, an allelochemical that suppresses the occurrence of the surrounding vegetation, from its stems and roots. In addition, P. hysterophorus causes damage to humans and livestock through various allergens. P. hysterophorus can be controlled by physical methods, such as cutting its stems or pulling roots, and by treatment with non-selective herbicides, such as glyphosate. Many biological control research studies have been conducted and, unfortunately, there is no a practical solution so far.
This experiments were conducted to determine the effect of allelopathy and autotoxicity in alfalfa. Among several alfalfa cultivars, the substances exudated from seven cultivars including Medicago sativa, c.v. Luna, Sparta, Magnum, Husky, Milkmaker, Challenger and Anchor inhibited the germination and seedling growth of radish, ranging from 60 to 80%. When allelopathic substances were exudated from the soil of the alfalfa-cultivated field, the increased levels of substance retarded the germination rate and seedling growth of radish and alfalfa. The inhibition rate was about 80%, compared with that of control. Thus, this study indicates that the allelopathy and autotoxicity substances of alfalfa influenced the germination and seedling growth in alfalfa itself and radish. When allelopathic substances were analysed by using gas chromatograph, several kinds of phenol compounds were detected as follows; Salicylic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, coumaric acid, and ferulic acid.
