Belief is generally understood as a mental phenomenon which is aimed to attain objective information of the world. Thus, the content of belief is not something that can be manipulated or created by men. The primary function of belief in a word is to represent the world correctly. Now, William James in his "The Will to Believe" challenges this view. According to James, one can come to believe something by choosing to believe it. And he argues for his position by criticizing W. K. Clifford who wrote an essay entitled "The Ethics of Belief". In this paper, I examine both arguments given by them and show whose position is more convincing.

우리나라 결핵퇴치 운동의 선구자이자 크리스마스 씰을 국내 최초로 발행한 셔우드 홀 박사의 외손자 클리포드 킹(Clifford King)씨가 지난 9월 24일 대한결핵협회를 방문했다. 셔우드 홀과 마리안 홀의 4자녀 중 쌍둥이로 태어난 막내딸 필리스 마리안의 외아들로, 셔우드 홀에게는 유일한 외손자이다. 이번 문은 CBS 방송국이 우리나라 재건에 일익을 담당했던 외국인 선교사 후손의 이야기를 다룬 "양화진 특집 다큐멘터리" 촬영의 일환으로 이루어졌다.

This paper proposes a new direction for Comparative Literature which has been deeply Eurocentric and even colonial ever since its birth. 'Comparison' in Comparative Literature has been in fact the ideological mechanism for containing, classifying, and eventually controlling all differences in the world. Literature has naturally served as a national institution of the West at epistemological and discursive level with hidden adjective "comparative". To re-conceptualize the discipline and practice of "Comparative Literature", we need to revolutionize methodology itself based on Wai Chee Dimock's idea of "Weak Theory", Foucault's "disappearance of author", and Clifford Geertz's "thick description". "Thick description" as a methodology of comparative literature re-establishes the discipline as a field of "weak theory", defusing the centrality of linguistic identity and re-making it as a "long network" of loose and missed connections. "Thick description" poses the publicness of nation-state within "confusion of tongues", problematizes the legitimacy of modern knowledge, and puts (the western) nationalism in question. With this idea as a starting point, we can re-imagine Comparative Literature anew as a field of ceaseless discourse of longer, weaker, and thicker networks of interpretation and re-interpretation of differences.

This paper proposes a method to find out the type and location information of Pauli X, Y, Z errors generated in quantum channels using only the quantum information processing part of the multiple-rate quantum turbo short-block code without external help from the classical information processing part. In order to obtain the location information of the Pauli X,Y error, n-auxiliary qubits and n-CNOT gates were inserted into the C[n,k,2] QSBC-QURC encoder. As a result, the maximum coding rate is limited to about 1/2 as the trade-off characteristics. The location information of the Pauli Z error for C[n,k,2] QSBC-QURC was obtained through the Clifford-based stabilizer measurement. The proposed method inherits all other characteristics of C[n,k,2] QSBC-QURC except for the coding rate.

It has been basic value and fundamental philosophy for a long time for archivists to protect neutrality and objectivity in records management. The demands to maintain objectivity of records management is directly related to protect the administrative and legal evidence of records for fulfilling jurisdictional goal, and more fundamentally, it is related with the intrinsic nature of archives. As an archivists' expertise is seems to be derived from ability to give objective-judge on record value, and candor to organize and classify records. Thus, the international Code of Ethics of archivists stipulates that all such obligations directly or indirectly. However, since Hans Booms and Terry Cook emphasized the social responsibility of archivists and highlighted the social power of archives, the discourse of archival objectivity gets to be given more attention to people. This article, following the cultural anthropologist Clifford Geertz' interpretative methodology theory, examine the archival implications to adopt the theory, particularly from the perspective of objectivity and archival otherness.

Most previous studies on A Gesture Life focused on illuminating the role and significance of Kkutaeh, the Korean comfort woman, whom Hata runs across at a military camp in the Burmese jungle. For instance, Carroll Hamilton argues that the return of Kkutaeh as a traumatic subject disrupts Hata's nationalist narrative, causing the protagonist's eventual failure at national enfranchisement. However, this paper focuses on Hata's relationship with Bedley Run, the sleepy suburban white town, in which the protagonist settles down right after immigration to the US. The racial/racist nature of Bedley Run has not received due critical attention, although a few studies on the novel saw Hata's gestures as a survival tactic deployed against the hostile environment of his new host society. This paper, resorting to Pierre Macherey's thesis on symptomatic reading, exposes what Hata, the narrator/protagonist, hides from his readers concerning his status in his muchbeloved town; and it also explores the subversive significance of Hata's ethnic memories. The aim of this study is, after all, to map both the subversive possibilities and the limitations of Hata's immigrant narrative as a bildungsroman.

The narrative of the film, Sweet Smell of Success has a multi-layered structure. In Clifford Odets's scenario work, numerous lines for the main plot and subplots repeated a cycle of creation, decomposition, deletion, and modification to enhance the density of the story. As a result, whenever an actor spoke a line or paused, an action or an event that would trigger another line was created, giving depth and persuasiveness to the character's performance. The music of Sweet Smell of Success has multi-layered elements. The non-diegetic music was covered by the orchestral pieces performed by Elmer Bernstein's big band orchestra and the jazz pieces performed by Fred Katz's combo band. The diegetic music was mostly covered by the jazz pieces performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet. The practical task of the film music was to reinforce or supplement the effect of the narrative driver, and the additional task was to realize the estrangement effect and the aesthetics of stagnation. The possibility and significance of intertextuality of subplots and double sound of this film are not simply confined to the limits of the film noir genre.
