  • Recently, along with the remarkable increase in interest in natural products, the application of phytoestrogens in anti-aging products has become very important. In the focus, we developed Pueraria mirifica (PM), in this in vivo study on skin elasticity and wrinkles, and investigated the anti-aging properties. Thirty healthy women volunteers, between the ages of 30 and 60, applied the cream formula with $4\% Pueraria mirifica or placebo, on the face area twice a day for 16 weeks. The evaluation was made by silicon replica analysis, Cutometer SEM 575 and Comeometer followed by statistical treatment using the student's t-test. Results of skin elasticity measurement showed that topical application on the skin increased the total surface of skin elasticity in comparison with placebo group (p<0.05). However, PM cream does not have prominent effect on the depth of wrinkles and skin moisturization. This in vivo study demonstrates that, PM exhibits a significant effect on skin elasticity therefore, is of great interest in anti-aging and firmness skin care products.

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of green manure crops on the changes of chemical properties and microorganisms in soil of continuous ginger cultivation. The biomass and nitrogen absorption of green manure crop were the highest in crimson clover. After cropping, soil phosphate content was the lowest in orchard grass, however, T-N content was the highest of hairy vetch > crimson clover > orchard grass. Also real-time PCR analysis was conducted to measure density of Pythium zingiberum in soil of before and after incorporation of green manure crop. Density of P. zingiberum was the lowest of all the green manures. In this results are summarized that green manure cropping reduced salt accumulation and density of P. zingiberum in continuous ginger cultivation.

  • In this study, the emulsion stability of henna, a natural hair dye, according to the content of cetyl alcohol, one of the emulsification stabilizers, was analyzed, and the content of cetyl alcohol showing the most stable emulsification was confirmed. To analyze the emulsion stability, differences in particle size, particle shape, viscosity, and color after dyeing were compared according to the content of cetyl alcohol. As a result of dynamic light scattering (DLS) zeta analysis, cetyl alcohol 3% showed the highest zeta potential value of 115.9 mV, and the particle size distribution was henna in which a cream-type hair dye containing 3% cetyl alcohol was dispersed in distilled water. The width of the particle size distribution was narrow compared to. As a result of viscometer analysis, the viscosity increased as the content of cetyl alcohol increased. As a result of measuring the henna pH of the cream formulation, it was measured in a pH range suitable for the scalp. As a result, emulsion stability increases as the content of cetyl alcohol increases in henna cream formulations for hair dye.

  • Leguminous cover crops fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. The objective of this research was carried out to decrease fertilizer amount by cover crops-wheat mixtures cultivation. Field experiment was conducted at upland soil 2008 to 2009. Cover crops were used crimson clover and hairy vetch. Treatments consisted of three wheat-crimson clover (wheat 10 kg + crimson clover 1, 3, $5kg\;10a^{-1}$), wheat-hairy vetch mixture (wheat 10 kg + hairy vetch $2kg\;10a^{-1}$), and wheat - hairy vetch mixture - crimson clover (wheat 10 kg + hairy vetch 2 kg + crimson clover $3kg\;10a^{-1}$). These treatments were divided into no fertilizer and top dressing. The yield of wheat and crimson clover mixtures had no significantly differences compared to wheat only at top dressing plots. Also soil chemical and physical properties were a little bit improved such as OM, $NO_3$-N, and bulk density etc by wheat-crimson clover mixtures. Therefore, we suggested that crimson clover and wheat mixture could be used to reduction of fertilizers amount for environmental friendly wheat production.

  • The microbial contamination of ice cream product commercially available in Korea was determined using ice bar, ice cream, ice milk and non-milk fat ice cream. Irradiation effect on enhancement of microbiological safety was also investigated at doses of 1, 3, and 5 kGy. In all products, yeast and molds were not detected, however, total aerobic and coliform bacteria were detected at 1-2 and 1-1.5 Log CFU/g level, respectively. According to the different flavor used in ice cream, total aerobic bacteria were detected as 2.30, 2.90, and 3.32 Log CFU/g level in vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream, respectively. Yeast and mold was not detected in vanilla ice cream but 2.30 and 2.70 Log CFU/g in chocolate and strawberry ice cream, respectively. Coliforms were also detected 1-2 Log CFU/g in the ice cream with different flavors. Listeria inocua and Escherichia coli were detected from 3 commercial samples but Salmonella spp. was not detected using API kit. Gamma irradiation significantly reduced the level of the contaminated total aerobic bacteria, yeast and molds and coliform population in the ice creams. These results indicated that irradiation(5kGy or less) is effective to ensure safety of ice cream.

  • Green manure crops are mainly used to reduce the application of chemical fertilizers. Mixture of green manure crops have beneficial effects in agroecosystem. In this study, experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of monoculture and mixtures of crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) on rice growth and yield in paddy. This experiment was conducted at Sinheung series (fine loamy, mixed, nonacid, mesic family of Fluvaquentic Endoaquepts) from Oct. 2007 to Oct. 2009 at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA, Suwon, Gyeonggi province, Korea. Seeding rates of crimson clover (CC) were consisted of monoculture (CC2, 3, 4 kg and hairy vetch 5 kg $10a^{-1}$) and mixtures (CC 2 + barley 7, CC 3 + barley 7, CC 4 + barley 7, and CC2 + hairy vetch $5kg\;10a^{-1}$). Seeds were drilled by partial tillage machine on 9th Oct. in 2007. Monoculture and mixture of crimson clover as a green manure crop was incorporated in soil for rice cultivation on 15th May in 2008. Chemical fertilizers had not been applied to monoculture and mixture plots. The biomass and N production of monoculture plots were lower than mixture plots. The biomass and N production of CC 2 + hairy vetch $5kg\;10a^{-1}$ plot were the highest among mixtures treatments. In rice growing season, ammonium nitrogen concentrations in soil were a little high trends at CC 2 + hairy vetch $5kg\;10a^{-1}$ plot. And soil bulk density and porosity were improved at mixture plot after rice harvesting. The rice yield of CC 2 + hairy vetch $5kg\;10a^{-1}$ plot was not significantly different from conventional practice plot. These results indicated that cropping of crimson clover with hairy vetch mixture was better than barley mixture for environmental friendly rice cultivation.
