  • A deformation model was developed to calculate the deformation of the uranium-silicide dispersion fuel (U$_3$Si-Al) elements for research reactors. The model was based on the elasto-plasticity theory and power-law creep theory. Also, isotopic swelling was assumed for the fuel meat and isotropic thermal expansion for the fuel meat and dadding. The new model calculated successfully the deformation of the fuels of HANARO and NRU (in Canada). As the most important result, it was shown that the primary deformation mechanism in the fuel meat was swelling and that in the cladding was creep. For all cases simulated, the maximum hoop stress at cladding outer surface was lass than 5MPa, probably well below the yield stress of the dadding, and finally, the volume change was predicted to be less than 10% in the whole burnup range.

  • To evaluate the practical application of oyster shells(OS) as construction materials, an experimental study was performed. More specifically, the long-term mechanical properties and durability of concrete blended with oyster shells were investigated. Test results indicate that long-term strength of concrete blended with 10% oyster shells is almost identical to that of normal concrete. However, the long-term strength of concrete blended with 20% oyster shells is appreciably lower than that of normal concrete. Thereby, concrete with higher oyster shell blend has the possibility of negatively influencing the concrete long-term strength. Elastic modulus of concrete blended with crushed oyster shells decreases as the blending mixture rate increases. Namely, the modulus is reduced to approximately 10∼15% when oyster shells are blended up to 20% as the fine aggregate. The drying shrinkage strain increases with an increasing crushed oyster shells substitution rate. In addition, the existing model code of drying shrinkage and creep do not coincide with the test results of this study. An adequate prediction equation needs to be developed. The utilization of oyster shells as the fine aggregate in concrete has an insignificant effect on fleering and thawing resistance, carbonation and chemical attack of concrete. However, water permeability is considerably improved.

  • This study was carried out to find the effect of heat treatment on the pitch content and the properties of the kraft pulp produced from Pinus koraiensis. In the results of this experiments, the heat treatment with $40^{\circ}C$ showed the best result in the yields and the pitch contents of kraft pulp of the woods from both artificial and natural stands. Other properties, however, were not improved. They were rather deteriorated with heat treatment. Therefore, it needs to select, the heat treatment conditions according to the properties of raw material, the pulping methods and the final use of pulp.

  • Prestressed composite girders provide efficient composite action by applying prestress to the sub-encasing concrete. In this study, an enhanced prestressed composite girder with forms suspended from the steel girder is utilized. Long-term behavior of the prestressed composite girder is estimated using age-adjusted effective modulus method, which is verified experimentally using measurements obtained from an in-service bridge. Then, parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences caused by ambient temperature, humidity, prestressing and concrete casting date.

  • Certain structural components are exposed to high temperatures. At high temperature, under thermal and mechanical loading, metal components exhibit both creep and plastic behavior. The unified constitutive theory is to model both the time-dependent behavior(creep) and the time-independent behavior(plasticity) in one set of equations. Microscopically both creep and plasticity are controlled by the motion of dislocations. A finite element method is presented encorporating a unified constitutive model for the transient analysis of viscoplastic behavior of structures exposed to high temperature.

  • Concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns are becoming popular in structural applications. The increased popularity comes from their excellent structural properties such as high strength, high ductility, and large energy absorption capacity. However, the disadvantage feature of CFT column is the difficulty in predicting its time dependant characteristic (i.e., creep and shrinkage) of inner concrete. The time dependent behavior of CFT column can cause serious serviceability problems. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the long term behavior of CFT column. This paper presents analytical and experimental studies on long-term behavior of CFT-column under a central axial loading. Two loading cases are considered in the research; (1) the load applied only at the inner core concrete of CFT-column and (2) the load applied simultaneously on both concrete and steel tube. Analysis method using the bond strength model is proposed and conclusions on long-term properties of CFT-column can be derived from the results.

  • In power generation systems a variety of structural components typically operate at high temperature and pressure. Therefore a life assessment methodology accounting for gradual creep fracture is increasingly needed for these components. The most critical defects in such structure are generally found in the form of semi-elliptical surface cracks in the welded tubular joints. Therefore the analysis of a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate or a shell is an important problem in engineering fracture mechanics. On this background, via shell/line-spring finite element analyses of such surface cracks in the welded T and L joints under various loadings, we investigate J-integral along the crack front We first develop T and L joints auto mesh generation program providing ABAQUS input file composed of shell/line-spring finite elements. We then further develop a T and L joints life assessment program based on the experimental creep crack growth law and auto mesh generation program in a graphical user interface format Finally the remaining life of T and L joints for various analytical parameters are assessed using the developed life assessment program.

  • In this paper, a relation to calculate design moments for reinforced concrete(RC) bridges constructed by movable scaffolding system(MSS) is introduced. Through the time-dependent analysis of RC bridges considering the construction sequence, the structural responses related to the member forces and deflections are reviewed, and a governing equation for determination of the design moment, which includes the creep deformation, is derived on the basis of the displacement-force condition at every constructuion stage. By using the relation, the design moment and its variation over time can easily be obtained only with the elastic analysis results without additional time-dependent analysis. In addition, correlation studies with the results by rigorous numerical analyses are conducts to verify the applicability of the introduced relation, and a more reasonable guideline for the determination of design moments is proposed on the basis of the obtained moment envelop.
