  • Mortality and growth rate of the soft coral, Dendronephthya gigantea, from Jejudo Island on the southern coast of Korea were investigated from February 2003 to October 2004 using SCUBA diving. 48 individuals with variable sizes of D. gigantea of the depth of 15m were tagged with flagging tapes and plastic films, and then monitored with two month intervals. The average mortality of two-month term for the study period was 50.4%, with the peak of 84.6% during the summer storms in August - October 2003. About the size class mortality, individuals of size class I(${\leq}$10 cm) showed the highest mortality, followed by size class III(>20 cm) and size class II(10 cm-20 cm). Growth rate did not show a seasonal pattern. For growth in length, individuals of D. gigantea grew about 3cm in average for two-month period, with a maximum growth of 6.4 cm which occurred in August - October 2003. For growth in diameter, individuals grew about 0.3 cm for 2 month term, with a maximum of 1.4cm in April - June 2004. Individuals of size class I usually grew faster than those of larger size classes. D. gigantea population in Jejudo Island was strongly affected by summer storms, which was due to annual event of summer typhoon. Never the less, it appears that the local population can be maintained by fast growth of the juvenile stage and active recruitment to compensate the high mortality caused by the summer disturbance.

  • This study utilized the 1/25,000 topographic map of the upper area from the Geum-ho watermark located at the middle of Geum-ho river from the National Geographic Information Institute. For the analysis, first, the influence of the size of critical area to the hydro topographic factors was examined changing grid size to $10m{\times}10m,\;30m{\times}30m\;and\;50m{\times}50m$, and the critical area for the formation of a river to $0.01km^2{\sim}0.50km^2$. It is known from the examination result of watershed morphology according to the grid size that the smaller grid size, the better resolution and accuracy. And it is found, from the analysis result of the degree of the river according to the minimum critical area for each grid size, that the grid size does not affect on the degree of the river, and the number of rivers with 2nd and higher degree does not show remarkable difference while there is big difference in the number of 1st degree rivers. From the results above, it is thought that the critical area of $0.15km^2{\sim}0.20km^2$ is appropriate for formation of a river being irrelevant to the grid size in extraction of hydro topographic parameters that are used in the runoff analysis model using topographic maps. Therefore, the GIUH model applied analysis results by use of the river level difference law proposed in this study for the explanation on the outflow response-changing characters according to the decision of a critical value of a minimum level difference river, showed that, since an ogival occurrence time and an ogival flow volume are very significant in a flood occurrence in case of not undertow facilities, the researcher could obtain a good result for the forecast of river outflow when considering a convenient application of the model and an easy acquisition of data, so it's judged that this model is proper as an algorism for the decision of a critical value of a river basin.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of object size and reaching distance on kinematic factors of the upper limb while performing arm reaching for normal subjects. Methods : The subjects of this study were 30 university students who were in D university in Busan, and the measuring tool was CMS-70P(Zebris Medizintechnik Gmbh, Germany), a three-dimensional motion analyzer. The task had six conditions. The average velocity of motion, average acceleration, maximum velocity, and the velocity definite number of movements were measured according to changes in object size(2cm, 10cm) and reaching distance(15%, 37.5%, 60%) when they performed arm reaching. The general characteristics of the subject were technical statistics. One-way ANOVA measurement was used to compare variables when the arm reaching task was performed from two object sizes to three reaching distance, and the post-test was conducted with Tukey test. In addition, an independent t-test was used to analyze the kinematic differences according to the two object sizes at three reaching distances. A two-way ANOVA measurement (3×2 Two-way ANOVA measurement) was performed to identify the interaction of the reaching distance(15%, 37.5%, 60%) and the object size(2cm, 10cm). The statistical significance level α was set to .05. Results : When the size of the object increased, the velocity and maximum velocity also increased, but the definite number of velocity decreased. When the reaching distance increased, the velocity and maximum velocity increased, whereas the definite number of velocity decreased. Conclusion : The clinical significance of this study could be utilized as the baseline data for grading object size and reaching distances when the reaching training is implemented for patients whose central nervous system was damaged.

  • Tubular bridge rail was developed to restrain and redirect a 14ton van-type truck. The developed bridge rail permits better visibility than concrete safety-shape bridge rail, and it has better structural adequacy than the existing steel and aluminum bridge rails in Korea. The new bridge rail consists of a tubular thrie beam(TTB) rail and a steel guard rail, which are connected to composite posts. The TTB shape provides both better containment of diverse bumper heights and more tight fit between the ends of bridge rail and roadside guardrails than the existing bridge rail sections currently used in Korea. Making composite post by filling concrete inside the steel pipe of the same size as are used for the roadside guardrail post was found to be more efficient in increasing the stiffness and ultimate strength than simply increasing the size of the steel pipe. The system was crash-tested for the impact condition of 14ton-80km/h-$15^{\circ}$, and it satisfied all evaluation criteria set forth in NCHRP Report 350 for a Test Level 4 safety appurtenance. Acceptable performances were obtained in computer simulations for the impact condition of S2.

  • The quality of the fruits is measured by a lot of parameters. The grader of the fruits to measure the size of them is using the rotation drum method. Therefore when we classify the size of the fruits, they will be damaged. Also the optical grader used for estimating the degree of the saccharinity will incur high cost for it. In the proposed system, to select the characteristics of the fruits, three cameras are used. Because the information such as the volume and the degree of the maturity is used to classify the fruits, the degree of the saccharinity can't be estimated itself, but the information such as the color and the damage of the fruits can be estimated. Therefore, because we don't need the digital image with high resolution, we can develop the grader system of the fruit with low cost. To evaluate the performance of the proposed system, we compared it with the sight estimation and then we classified the sample. The result shows the accuracy of 96.7%.

  • To propose a cause analysis method of pressurized facilities, a likelihood of failure (LOF) for the thinning module by hydrochloric acid corrosion was analyzed through the risk-based inspection (RBI) using API-581 BRD. For this investigation, the technical module subfactor (TMSF), as a main factor of the LOF, was estimated, and the effects of parameters on the TMSF were analyzed quantitatively. As a result, we found that the TMSF increased with increasing chloride ion concentration and temperature, but it decreased with increasing thickness of the facilities, inspection number and inspection effectiveness. Also, the TMSF showed a relatively low value for the monitoring system implemented and the overdesign factor>1.5. In this condition, the TMSF changed sensitively with the inspection number, the inspection effectiveness and the overdesign factor, and its magnitude varied with the monitoring system.

  • Ground Subsidence has been continuously occurring in densely populated downtown. The main cause of ground subsidence is the damaged underground facility like sewer. Currently, ground subsidence is being dealt with by discovering cavities in ground using GPR. However, this consumes large amount of manpower and cost, so it is necessary to predict hazardous area for efficient operation of GPR. In this study, ◯◯city is divided into 500 m×500 m grids. Then, data set was constructed using the characteristics of the underground facility and ground subsidence in grids. Data set used to machine learning model for ground subsidence risk grade prediction. The purposed model would be used to present a ground subsidence risk map of target area.

  • Model for optimally dimensioned PE film bag was developed according to fruit size to maintain best quality of 'Fuyu' persimmon in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage based on relationship between quality and oxygen and carbon dioxide in PE film bag. Harvested persimmons were graded into five sizes, and average weights were LL:261, L:217, M:188, S:168, and SS:154 g. Five fruit units of each grade were optimized in five PE film bag sizes of $150{\times}376,\;140{\times}357,\;130{\times}344,\;130{\times}333,\;and\;120{\times}3l8\;mm$. To minimize quality deterioration such as softening and discoloration, optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations in PE film bag were 0.5-1.0 and 6.0-8.0%, respectively, and optimal thickness of PE film bag according to fruit size were LL:45, L:50, M:55, S:60, and $SS:65\;{\mu}m$. For all fruit sizes, model for PE film bag area $(mm^2)$ was good quadratic simple equation by fruit weight (g): $Y=-4055.707+627.993X_1-0.701{X_1}^2$. Model far optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide (Y) concentration in PE film bag was suited to linear multiple equation by fruit weight $(X_1,\;g)$ and PE film thickness $(X_2,\;{\mu}m)$. Equations for oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations (%) were $Y=5.798-0.0109X_l-0.0491X_2\;and\;Y=-2.427+0.01927X_l +0.09646X_2$, respectively.

  • Cephalanthera erecta (Thunb. ex, Murray) is an herbaceous and a member of the genus Cephalanthera in the family Orchidaceae. The species is an herbaceous and has reputed Chinese medicinal value. It has been investigated the population density and spatial distribution of this species at Mt. Ahop in Korea during 2015. The spatial pattern of C. erecta was analyzed according to several patchiness indexes, population uniformity or aggregation under different sizes of plots by dispersion indices, and spatial autocorrelation. The mean crowding (M*) and patchiness index (PAI) showed positive values except one small plot (2 m × 2 m). Most natural individuals of C. erecta for plots were not uniformly distributed in the forest community. The small plots (2 m × 2 m, to 8 m × 16 m) of C. erecta were uniformly distributed in the forest community and large plots (16 m × 16 m and 16 m × 32 m) were aggregately distributed. Significant aggregations by Moran's I of C. erecta were partially observed within IV classes (12 m). Dissimilarity among pairs of individuals could found by more than 18.0 m. In conclusion, the geographic distribution of C. erecta is not even with varying degrees of size of plots and human activities give rise to density effects in the plots at Mt. Ahop in Korea.
