  • The decommissioning of Kori unit 1, which was permanently shut down in June of 2017, will be the first instance of the dismantling of a commercial nuclear power plant in Korea. The disposal of waste during the dismantling process accounts for a large part of the total decommissioning cost. Therefore, structures consisting of activated and contaminated concrete must be economically and safely dismantled by establishing a proper dismantling strategy. This study focuses on optimized dismantling and disposal scenarios pertaining to a biological shield. Several dismantling cases, regulations and technologies related to waste treatment as these practices pertain to nuclear power plants are analyzed. To minimize the amount of waste from the biological shield dismantling process, an optimized dismantling scenario is presented and disposal alternatives for dismantled concrete waste are proposed.

  • The number of industrial structures that must be demolished due to functional and structural deterioration has been increased. There is an increasing application of explosive demolition or explosive demolition combined with mechanical demolition to minimize temporal and spatial environmental hazardous factors created during the process of demolition. In this case study, to demolish the turbine foundation structure, which is a large-section reinforced concrete structure, the parital explosive demolition thchnique was conducted. As a result of the partial explosive demolition, the overall crushing of the blasting sections of beam-column joints structure with haunched beams and second-floor columns about the turbine foundation was satifactory, and the explosive demolition was completed without causing any damage to surrounding facilities.

  • In order to decommission the shielding concrete of KRR(Korea Research Reactor) -1&2, it must be exactly determined activated level and range by neutron irradiation during operation. To determine the activated level and range, it must be sampled and analyzed the core sample. But, there are difficulties in sample preparation and determination of the measurement efficiency by self-absorption. In the study, the full energy efficiency of the HPGe detector was compared with the measured value using standard source and the calculated one using Monte Carlo simulation. Also. self-absorption effects due to the density and component change of the concrete were calculated using the Monte Carlo method. Its results will be used radioactivity analysis of the real concrete core sample in the future.

  • Recently, the demand of demolition for the unnecessary industrial structure is increasing due to deterioration tendency and the issue of demolition is becoming a major highlight. The restoration of the dismantled industrial site to its original natural state was currently underway. This execution case was intented to describe an application of the felling method one of the explosive demolition method to the demolition of the industrial stack. This stack was 150m high, a composite structure in which the outer wall of the stack was a reinforced concrete shell structure and internal stovepipe was a steel shell structure. As as result of the explosive demolition, the stack had collapsed precisely according to estimated direction. And the explosive demolition was completed without causing any damage to surrounding facilities.

  • Concrete waste accounts for approximately 70~80% of the total waste generated during the decommissioning of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Based upon the concentration of each radionuclide, the concrete waste from the decommissioning can be used in the determination of the clearance threshold used to classify waste as radioactive. To reduce the cost of radioactive concrete waste disposal, it is important to perform decontamination before self-disposal or limited recycling. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the internal radioactivity distribution of radioactive concrete waste to ensure effective decontamination. In this study, the performance metrics of various Compton reconstruction algorithms were compared in order to identify the best strategy to estimate the internal radioactivity distribution in concrete waste during the decommissioning of NPPs. Four reconstruction algorithms, namely, simple back-projection, filtered back-projection, maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM), and energy-deconvolution MLEM (E-MLEM) were used as Compton reconstruction algorithms. Subsequently, the results obtained by using these various reconstruction algorithms were compared with one another and evaluated, using quantitative evaluation methods. The MLEM and E-MLEM reconstruction algorithms exhibited the best performance in maintaining a high image resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), respectively. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of using Compton images in the estimation of the internal radioactive distribution of concrete during the decommissioning of NPPs.

  • Recently, several cases of destruction of old cylindrical silos by explosive demolition method have been reported. This study deals with the subject concerning the pre-weakening of a cylindrical concrete silo for the application of overturning explosive demolition method. In the past, the pre-weakening operation of structure in explosive demolition has been done by use of some empirical methods. These empirical approaches, however, have possibilities of unexpected accidents. In order to provide a guideline for the pre-weakening of cylindrical silos and similar structures, this paper shows the result of a case study, in which the instability of a silo due to pre-weakening is investigated by a numerical structural analysis before actually conducting pre-weakening and demolition operations.
