  • More than sixty percentage of highway in South Korea were constructed by concrete pavements and more than half of the concrete pavements were twenty years or older. The most of highway have difficulty in providing detour due to the traffic and road condition of South Korea. So far, asphalt concrete has been used for the overlay of aged cement concrete pavement. However, the frequent early damage and maintenance of typical asphalt overlay due to repetitive maintenance causes inconvenience of road users and expensive costs. It is necessary to investigate the factors affecting the performance of asphalt concrete overlay to improve the performance of asphalt overlay. However, the performance data of asphalt concrete overlay in South Korea does not exist. In this research, to investigate on the factors affecting the life of asphalt concrete overlay was attempted based on statistical analysis of the performance data of asphalt concrete overlay included in LTPP (Long-Term Pavement Performance) Database of U.S.A.

  • Joints are provided in cement concrete pavements to control transverse and longitudinal cracking that occur due to restrained deformations caused by moisture and temperature variations in the slab. But the constuction of joints reduces the load-carrying capacity of the pavement at the joints, and pavements have been deteriorated by cracks at the slab edges along the joints due to traffic loads. Therefore, it is important to analyze the behavior of joints accurately in the design of cement concrete pavements. In this study, the mechanical behavior of cement concrete pavement slabs is analyzed by the plate-finite element model, and Winkler foundation model is adopted to analyze the subgrades. The load transfer mechan¬ism of joints are composed of dowel action, aggregate interlocking, and tied-key action, and the analytical pro¬gram is developed using these joint models. Using this numerical model as an analysis tool, the effects of joint parameters on the behavior of pavements are investigated.

  • The internal or external restraint of thermal and dry shrinkage movements could thus generate tensile stresses in concrete pavement for early traffic opening. Restrained shrinkage and thermal stresses could produce microcracks in concrete which increase its permeability and accelerate its long-term deterioration under weathering and load effects. Fiber reinforced concrete is an effective approach to the control of microcrack and crack development under tensile stresses. This study aims at evaluation of the durability of high early strength concrete for early traffic opening and increase of service life. Three different types of regulated-set cement which recently has been used much in Korea were adopted. Fibers were added and their mixtures were compared with plain high early strength concrete mixture. The use of fibers increased durability performance of high early strength concrete using regulated-set cement than the corresponding plain mixtures.

  • It is known that the Q/C(Quality Control) in the early age of portland cement concrete(PCC) pavement gives a huge effect on long term pavement performance. Thus, many studies regarding the construction of PCC pavement have focused on how to assure construction quality at the early age stage. Curing is one of the most important factor in Q/C of PCC pavement. Membrane curing that protects the evaporation of moisture by placing an impermeable layer on the slab surface is the most common practice for curing the PCC pavement. In order to improve the membrane curing practice, the rate of curing compound should be optimized. However, the optimum rate of curing compound considering Korean weather and environmental conditions has not been specified in the pavement construction specifications. In this study, a proper application rate was recommended in terms of minimizing evaporation with several full-scale tests where various rates of curing compound have been applied. Four test sites on the expressway were enlisted during the summer of 2002 and 2003. Application rates tested were in the range of $0. The rate of evaporation, the temperature pattern of the slab and the pulse velocity of concrete surface have been monitored at each test construction. The result from this study showed that the rate of current construction was approximately $160ml/m^2$ and that approximately $400ml/m^2$ of curing application was recommended as the proper rate for minimizing the moisture evaporation.
