  • The presence of cavitations under pavements or behind tunnel linings of concrete is likely to result in collapse. One method of detecting such voids by non-destructive means is low frequency type radar(GPR). By the way, the size and thickness of small cavitation can't be detected by the present radar technology with low frequency and low resolution when it apply to civil structures like that. To overcome these problems and limitations, this study aims to develope and propose a new analysis method for estimating the depth, cross-sectional size and thickness of cavitations using low frequency radar. A new proposed method is based on the experiments that are carried out for analyzing the correlation between the measurement values(the amplitudes of radar return) of low frequency radar and various type of cavitations. In this process, the threshold value for radar image processing which aims to represent only cavitations to be fitted size can be obtained. As the results, it is clarified that a proposed method has a possibility of estimating cavitation depth, size and thickness with good accuracy in laboratory scale.

  • Recently in Japan, fracturing was observed on the diagonal member of a through truss bridge at the boundary region with the concrete slab. Local corrosion damage where the diagonal member was enclosed in the concrete slab is an important factor in the fracture. In this study, accelerated exposure tests were carried out on concrete-steel model specimens simulating steel members at the boundary with concrete. Fatigue tests were then performed on the corroded model specimens. Accelerated exposure tests of the S6-cycle, which is carried out on the model specimens for 150, 300, 450 and 600 da ys. Their surface geometry was then measured. From the accelerated exposure test results, change in maximum and mean corrosion depths was determined according to the testing periods. The effect of local corrosion on fatigue strength was also presented based on the fatigue test results.

  • In this paper, a development of composite bridge decks was proposed for design of civil and architectural structures to reuse the empty cans and plastics etc. The experimental specimens were made of rigid foamed urethane taking advantage of corrosionlessness in steel bridge decks, and simplicity in the field construction. 'Therefore, introducing the empty cans into the rigid foamed urethane, this experimentation have been carried out to demonstrate and evaluate the structural behavior by means of loading and vibration tests in composite bridge decks. Consequently, it was possible that had a good effect on the structural behavior by absorbing the strain due to the low elasticity of rigid foamed urethane, and not influence to cans in composite bridges.

  • Although composite construction has more mechanical advantages compared to noncomposite construction, the design of noncomposite construction for skew bridges with large skew angels has been often checked because composite construction may cause large stresses in the bridge deck. In this study, the analytical model considered dynamic behaviors for noncomposite skew bridges was proposed. Using the proposed analytical model, the validity of the application of noncomposite construction to skew bridges was checked. Also, the effects of interactions between the concrete deck and steel girders such as composite construction, partial composite construction, and noncomposite construction on the dynamic characteristics and dynamic behaviors of simply supported skew bridges were investigated. A series of parametric studies for the total 27 skew bridges was conducted with respect to parameters such as girder spacing, skew angle, and deck aspect ratio. Although the slip at the interfaces between the concrete deck and steel girders results in the reduction of seismic total base shear in the transverse direction due to period elongation, it causes an undesirable behavior of skew bridges by the modification in mode shapes and distributions of stiffness. Shear connectors placed by minimum requirements for partial composite action have an effect on reducing the girder stresses and deck stresses; except case of some skew bridges, the magnitude of the girder stresses and deck stresses obtained from partial composite skew bridges is similar to or slightly more than those acquired from composite skew bridges.

  • This study investigates the effect of carbon fiber sheet (CFS) and carbon fiber strand sheet (CFSS) on the fatigue resistance and compressive strength of RC slabs. The results of a comparison of the number of equivalent cycles between the CFS- and CFSS-reinforced RC slab test specimens obtained from a fatigue test indicate that the CFSS-reinforced RC slab has 1.2~1.3 times greater effect of reinforcement than the CFS-reinforced RC slab. This study also indicates that the fatigue resistance of the CFS- and CFSS-reinforced RC slabs is ensured when the compressive strength of concrete is not lower than the specified design strength prescribed in the Specifications for Highway Bridges but is not ensured when the compressive strength of concrete is lower than the specified design strength, although the effect of reinforcement is secured.

  • In the case of South Korea, steel girder bridge (steel box or H-steel) and PSC (Pre-Stressed Concrete) girder bridge are the representative upper structures of railroad and road bridges. These structures account for 75% of the total bridge constructions and 80% of the total construction cost. Since the form work for concreting bridge slab is difficult, various construction methods developed and applied. However, several problems in those methods did not solve partially, including cost increase by material loss and rise of labor costs, quality deterioration by unskilled workers, increased construction time by complicated method, reduced productivity, safety accident by high place work, difficult transportation by big member, and rise of maintenance cost by material characteristic. Alternative method is needed to solve problems of as-is methods. Therefore, the purpose of this study is development of the purlin hanging system form for the girder bridge slab and its economic analysis. Through the findings of this study, it was verified that the purlin hanging system form is possible 60% reduction in cost and 80% reduction in time as comparison with conventional method.

  • In widening of existing bridges, construction joints between old new parts of concrete slabs are subjected to repeated traffic loads during placing and curing of concrete. Therefore, the main focus of this paper is given to examine several construction methods of bridge widening. As a result, the occurrence of cracks in vibrating specimen is faster than non-vibrating one, but the difference between flexural strength and ultimate moment was negligible. Also, it shows the same result in other construction method, say direct and non-shrinkage joint specimen.

  • Punching shear in concrete slabs is a serious problem in certain structural systems, such as flat slab. In this study, mechanical improvement between specimens which are unstrengthened and strengthened with steel plate and fiber panel is experimentally investigated. The strengthened bridge deck specimens had increment of strength and broke down with punching shear failure. Strengthening ratio should be considered to restraint punching failure.

  • Fatigue damage to reinforced concrete bridge decks have been found in many bridges. Failure mode of most reinforced concrete decks is caused by local punching shear rather than flexural moment due to cumulated damage. In this study, mechanical degradation of unstrengthened and strengthened bridge deck specimens is experimentally investigated. The unstrengthened deck specimens were damaged under the pulsating loading condition. After the test, deteriorated deck specimens were strengthened with Carbon Fiber Sheet, then loaded to observe the improvement of the fatigue behavior. It is shown that fatigue damaged specimens are similar to real bridge rather than static damaged specimens.

  • Considerable research has been done to study the fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete bridge deck which is strengthened by carbon fiber sheets. Before the strengthening, the specimen was damaged by repeated loads with various repeat cycles. The results of this study show that strengthening efficiency is getting rised in the lower pre-damaged degree. When the fatigue damaged bridge-deck is strengthened, the crack propagation may be controled efficiently
