  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail direct injection system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors with different electric driving characteristics, including solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. Namely three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were investigated in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. As this research results, it was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection with different electrical characteristic for driving the injector.

An Experimental Study on Injection and Durability Characteristics of Common-rail Injector According to mixture Ratio of Bio-diesel (바이오 디젤 혼합비에 따른 커먼레일 인젝터의 분사 및 내구특성에 관한 실험 연구)

  • An object of this study is to understand the correlation of injection characteristics and injector dimensions according to biodiesel mixture. The Injection characteristics of different types of common-rail injectors are the number of nozzle holes (5~8), jet cone angle ($146^{\circ}{\sim}153^{\circ}$), hydraulic flow rate (830~900 ml/min) injection quantity and response time. Prior to characteristic experiment, the reference injector has been selected in 6 candidates injectors under the investigation of injected quantity according to the biodiesel mixture so that injector type can be determined. The injector is used for the characteristic experiment which varied the various operating conditions including pressure 23 MPa, 80 MPa, 160 MPa, changing in injection duration 0.16 ms~1.2 ms and even mixture ratio. The result shows that the nozzle hole number and cone angle influence the injection quantity much more than nozzle hole diameter at low injection pressure and the nozzle hole diameter at high injection pressure, post injection duration.

  • It is well known that the performance of a diesel injector is directly related to the power, emission, and fuel consumption of the diesel combustion engine. In this study, the injection response characteristics of CRDi injectors driven by a solenoid coil and a piezoceramic were investigated by using the AMESim simulation code. Some analytical parameters such as the fuel pressure and hole diameter were considered. From this study, it was shown that the piezo-driven injector had a faster response and had better control capability than the solenoid-driven injector. In addition, it was found that the piezo-driven injector can be utilized more effectively in a multiple injection scheme than a solenoid-driven injector.

  • As a response to exhaust gas regulations, the electronic control system was applied to the diesel engine. The injected fuel mass and injection timing are accurately controlled using it, and the fuel efficiency and the engine output are significantly increased. In addition, the noise and the vibration of vehicles are decreased. To maintain the optimal performance of an electronic control diesel engine, it is important to control the fuel injection pressure accurately using the fuel pressure regulator. When the fuel pressure regulator is not worked normally, the failure phenomena (starting failure, staring delay, accelerated failure, engine mismatch et al.) occurred because the fuel pressure is not stabilized and controlled accurately. In this study, the effects on a fuel pressure, return fuel mass flow, and engine rotating speed according to the control rate of fuel pressure regulator were investigated to analyze the performance variation under the failure conditions of a fuel pressure regulator. As a result, when the control rate of a fuel pressure regulator decreased by 4%~6% compared to that of the standard condition, the variation of engine rotating speed and return fuel flow were increased greatly, and the abnormal condition occurred. In addition, it is possible to diagnose the failure of a fuel pressure regulator by monitoring these conditions.

  • In this study, experimental approaching method was applied under and single-cylinder engine to research the performance of direct needle-driven piezo injector (DPI) for CR direct-injection. As key-point factor of this DPI that relies on direct-acting operating of injector needle, unlike conventional hydraulic-servo, its nozzle needle can be directly driven by piezo actuator. Thus, effect of direct-acting injection of DPI on diesel combustion and emission characteristics was investigated under common-rail single-cylinder direct-injection engine, equipped with three different driving mechanism, including indirect-acting solenoid, piezo and DPI system. As main results, it found that a direct-acting piezo injector has higher of IMEP. And it has higher heat release rate during premixed combustion and mixing controlled combustion phase due to its higher heat release, even though nitrogen oxide (NOx) formations were increased slightly.

  • This paper proposes a common rail pressure control algorithm for passenger car diesel engines. For handling the parameter-varying characteristics of common rail systems, the quantitative feedback theory (QFT) is applied to the design of a robust rail pressure control algorithm. The driving current of the pressure control valve and the common rail pressure are used as the input/output variables for the common rail system model. The model parameter uncertainty ranges are identified through experiments. Rail pressure controller requirements in terms of tracking performance, robust stability, and disturbance rejection are defined on a Nichols chart, and these requirements are fulfilled by designing a compensator and a prefilter in the QFT framework. The proposed common rail pressure control algorithm is validated through engine experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed rail pressure controller has a good degree of consistency under various operating conditions, and it successfully satisfies the requirements for reference tracking and disturbance rejection.

  • In order to meet stringent future emission regulations, especially to reduce Particulate Matter (PM) and NOX, stoichiometric diesel combustion technology with a piezo group-hole nozzle injector is being researched for reduction harmful emissions. A new nozzle layout, namely a group-hole nozzle, which has one group of small orifices with a wide spray included angle was investigated to improve the efficiency of stoichiometric diesel combustion. From this point of view, the group-hole nozzle suggested by Dense Co. is an attractive candidate method applicable to stoichiometric diesel combustion. The group-hole nozzle concept is to reduce the injector nozzle hole diameters without sacrificing spray penetration by closely locating two holes. Experimental studies have proven that the spray from group-hole nozzles have similar spray penetration to that of a single hole with equivalent overall nozzle hole area, but the spray drop sizes (SMD) are reduced, aiding vaporization and mixing.

A Study on Injector Durability Test with Diesel and BD20 Using Common Rail (커먼레일을 이용한 디젤과 BD20 연료가 인젝터에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The characteristics of diesel and biodiesel are similar like as cetane number and auto-ignition temperature. High cetane number of diesel and BD could make possible to compression ignition. but BD showed different atomization from diesel due to component like density, viscosity and iodine value etc. Because of this, the biodiesel requires validation. This study using diesel and BD20 investigated effect to durability injector. Durability test were used common rail and bosch solenoid type 5-hole injector. Total test was 672hr but actual running time was 200hr. Spray experiments for spray characteristics were carried out using constant volume combustion chamber. Spray characteristics of diesel and BD showed different result up to durability test time. After 100hr, diesel showed spray shapes were stable but BD was not. After 200hr, difference of diesel and BD spray shapes were grow serious.

  • A Common-Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) system for high speed diesel engines was developed to meet reductions of noise and vibration, emission regulations. High pressure in the common rail with electric control allows the fuel quantity and injection timing to be optimized and controlled throughout a wide range of engine velocity and load conditions. In this study, CRDI system analysis model which includes fuel and mechanical systems was developed using commercial software, AMESim in order to predict characteristics for various fuel injection components. The parameter sensitivity analysis such as throttle size, injection rate, plunger displacement, supply pressure of fuel injection for system design are carried out.
