Due to increasing need for better emission characteristics and lower fuel consumption rate in automotive engines, alternative fuels are drawing more attentions recently. The GTL (gas to liquid) is the one of most favored candidates. In this study, emission characteristics are compared between diesel and GTL fuel in commercial 2.0 liter diesel engine and vehicle with CRDi(Common Rail Direct injection) system. The effects of injection timings on emission and fuel consumption rate are compared at various engine speeds and loads. Noticeable reduction in HC, CO and PM emissions are observed due to higher cetane number and low sulfur and aromatic contents in GTL. On the trade-off curve of NOx and PM(Particulate matter) GTL showed much more benefits than diesel, where about 30% of PM mass decreased at the same operating conditions. On CVS 75 mode test in vehicle, GTL showed an excellent emission enhancement, in which 50% of HC, 21% of PM, and 12% of NOx engine-out emissions are decreased compared to ULSD(Ultra low sulfur diesel) fuel.

This paper describes the engine performance and combustion characteristics of a CRDI diesel engine, operated by electronically controlled diesel fuel injector with variable injection timing. This experiment focused on fuel injection timing and pressure about combustion characteristics of CRDI diesel engine. EGR was excepted because it would be furtherly analyzed with additional experiments. The experiment was conducted under the circumstance of engine torque for 4, 8, 12 and 16 kgf-m and fuel injection timing for $15^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ and $5^{\circ}$ BTDC, at the engine speed of 1100, 1400, 1700 and 2000 rpm. Fuel injection was controlled to retard or advance initiation of the injection event by electronically controlled fuel injection unit injector on the personal computer. When fuel was injected into the cylinders of a CRDI diesel engine it would go through ignition delay before starting of combustion. Therefore, fuel injection timing of CRDI diesel engine had a significant effect upon performance and combustion characteristics. Depending on the injection timing the fuel consumption rate following the rotational speed and torque was 3~78 g/psh (1.7~30.6%). The range of fuel injection timing that resulted in low fuel consumption overall was BTDC 15-10 degrees.

The study is actively being performed to increase fuel injection pressure of common rail system among countermeasures to meet the emission regulation strengthen of the Diesel engine. The common rail fuel injection tube in such ultra high pressure common rail system has the weakest structural characteristics against vibration that is generated by fuel injection pressure and pulsation during engine operation and driving. Thus the extreme durability is required for common rail fuel injection tube, and the drawing process is being magnified as the most important technical fact for strength of seamless pipe that is the raw material of common rail tube. In this respect, we analyzed the characteristic of dimension and stress variation of the ultra high pressure common rail fuel injection tube by variation of Die and Plug angle in drawing process. Based on the analysis, we tried to obtain the raw material strength of common rail fuel injection tube for applying to the ultra high pressure common rail system. As a result, Plug angle is more important than entry angle of Die and we could obtain the target dimension and strength of the ultra high pressure common rail fuel injection tube through optimization of Plug angle.

Calculation of indicated mean effective pressure(IMEP) requires high cylinder pressure sampling rate and heavy computational load. Because of that, it is difficult to implement in a conventional electronic control unit. In this paper, a cylinder pressure based real-time IMEP estimation method is proposed for controller implementation. Crank angle at 10-bar difference pressure($CA_{DP10}$) and cylinder pressure difference between $60^{\circ}$ ATDC and $60^{\circ}$ BTDC($DP_{deg}$) are used for IMEP estimation. These pressure variables can represent effectively start of combustion(SOC) and fuel injection quantity respectively. The proposed IMEP estimation method is validated by transient engine operation using a common-rail direct injection diesel engine.

Fuel injection system greatly affects the performance of a direct injection diesel engine. A common rail injection system was introduced to satisfy the stringent emission standards, low fuel consumption, and low noise in recent years. The performance of a common-rail fuel injection system is strongly influenced by the injector characteristics. The common rail injector has evolved in order to improve its injection performance. The piezo-actuated injector is more suitable for common rail injection system due to its fast response and is expected to replace current solenoid-operated injector. In this study, nonlinear mathematical models are proposed for the solenoid-operated and the piezo-actuated injectors for control applications. Based on these models, the injection rate, which is one of the most important factors for the injection characteristics, is estimated using sliding mode observer. The simulation results and the experimental data show that the proposed sliding mode observers can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate for both common-rail injectors.

The static and dynamic behaviour of VGT and EGR systems has a significant impact on overall engine performance, fuel economy and exhaust emissions. This is because they define the state and composition of the air charge entering the engine. This work focused on the effect of the aperture ratio of VGT and EGR on the emission and flow characteristics under partial loads conditions. The investigation carried out using 2 liter PCCI 4 cylinder diesel engine with VGT and EGR. The result of this study shows that smoke increases with increasing EGR rate and NOx decreases with increasing EGR rate. It was also found that the residual gas contents greatly impact on soot emission under partial load condition. Finally, it can be concluded that VGT and EGR aperture ratio can greatly impact not only on soot and NOx but also air charging.

The purpose of this work is an experimental investigation of combustion and emission characteristics in DI diesel engine applied high EGR rate as a method of low-temperature combustion. In order to analyze the effect of EGR rate variation, a single-cylinder DI diesel engine was operated under various EGR rate conditions. In addition, injection timing was variously controlled to investigate the effect of injection timing in DI diesel engine using the cooled-EGR system. The NOx emissions were decreased in accordance with the increase of EGR rate. On the contrary, soot emissions were generally increased under applied EGR conditions. However, soot emissions were decreased in a few injection timings under high EGR rate conditions. The EGR results show that the ignition delay were increased by decreased oxygen concentrations in combustion chamber under the high EGR rate.
Recently, R&D demand for environmental friendly vehicle has rapidly increased due to its global environmental issues such as global warming, energy and economic crisis. Under this situation, the most realistic alternative way for environmental friendly vehicle is a clean diesel vehicle. The common-rail fuel injection system, as key technology of clean diesel vehicle, consists of a high pressure pump, common-rail, high pressure fuel line and electronic control injector. In common-rail high-pressure fuel injection system, high pressure wave of injection system and geometry of injector elements have a major effects on high-pressure fuel spray. Therefore, in this study, the numerical model was developed for analysis about the common-rail fuel pressure pulsation by using AMESim code. We could secure stability of common-rail high-pressure fuel injection system through optimal design of fuel line.
The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors, solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type, with different electric driving characteristics So, three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were used in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of solenoid-driven injector to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection and temperature of injected fuel and electrical characteristic of the driven injector.

Noises from diesel engine are the major issues for noise pollution as well as affect customers' purchasing needs to vehicles powered by diesel engine. This study investigates to screen-out main factors that contribute to noises from diesel engine using VGT 2000cc engine developed recently. Changes of fuel temperature, intake temperature and the presence of three way catalyst don't affect the 'Engine Radiation Noise' and the solely three way catalyst influence on the 'Tail Pipe Noise'. Especially, there are no effects of the presence of three way catalyst on torque, which is main subject that should be considered in secondary study.
