  • The volcanic lavas in the Janggi area are plotted on basalt, basaltic andesite and andesite field (SiO$_2$; 48-61 wt.%) in the TAS diagram and belong to subalkaline series. Nineteen chenmical analyses of lavas show two distinct differentiation trends; tholeiitic and calc-alkaline. Calc-alkaline basaltic andesites composed of plagioclase and two-pyroxenes (cpx, opx) in their phenocrysts. Tholeiitics basaltic lavas can be classified into two sub-types. The one is porphyritic basalts composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and olivine phenocryst, and the other is aphyric basalt and more evolved lavas (aphyric basaltic andesite) with the same mineral phases. Incompatible elements and REE patterns show the enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE. This characteristics indicate that these lavas are evolved from the magmas related to subduction. Howeverm calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas show that slightly higher enrichment of LILE and the depletion of HFSE than those of tholeiitic basaltic lavas. On the tectonic discriminant diagram such as Ba/Th and La/Th ratios, calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas belong to orogenic medium to high-K suites, whereas tholeiitic basaltic lavas belong to medium-K suites and MORB. On the other diagram, such as La/Yb vs. Th/Yb, the volcanic lavas in the study area plotted in the field of oceanic arc basalt. Tholeiitic basaltic lavas are located in more prinitive environment than calc-alkaline andesitic lavas.

  • The Miocene volcanic rocks in the Dangsari area, eastern part of Ulsan city, are mainly composed of andesite lava flows and pyroclastic rocks. The andesite lavas are identified as two-pyroxone andesite, comprising phenocrysts of augite ($Wo_{43.2}$ $En_{41.0}$ $Fs_{15.8}$ ) and hyperthene ($Wo_{2.7}$ $65.8_{En}$ $_{Fs}$ 31.5). The andesitic pyroclastic rocks are largely composed of pyroclastic breccias with alternating tuff-breccia and lapilli tuff, which showing planar layering, and minor amount of andesitic tuff with thin deposits of interlayered tuffaceous shale. According to the petrochemical data, andesitic rocks belong to medium-K calc-alkaline andesite. The position of bulk composition on the AFM diagram and the presence of normative quartz and hypersthene indicate that the volcanic rocks are calc-alkaline. The trace element composition and REE patterns of andesite, which are characterized by a high LILE/HFSE ratio and enrichment in LREE, suggest that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkalic volcanic rocks produced in the subduction environment. On the discrimination diagram, the Dangsari volcanic rocks fall into the fields of subduction related continental margin arc volcanic province. The primary magic melts may be derived from about 15% partial melting of mantle wedge in the upper mantle under destructive plate margin. And the melt evolved to calc-alkaline andesite magma by fractional crystallization and the magma was a little contaminated with crustal materials.

  • Lithological and petrochemical characteristics and tectonic setting of the Cretaceous volcanic rocks in Hampyeong area located in the southwestern part of Okchon Zone, were studied by field survey and petrochemistry of major, trace, and rare earth elements. The $SiO_2$contents of the volcanic rocks range from 50.8 to 77.2wt.%. With increasing $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3\;^T$, $TiO_2$, MnO, CaO and MgO contents decrease and $K_2O$content increase, but $Na_2O$content is scatter to the trend. According to TAS and AFM diagrams, the Cretaceous volcanic rocks are calc-alkaline series. On the discrimination diagram of $K_2O$versus $SiO_2$, the volcanic rocks belong to high-K rocks series. The trace element compositions and REE patterns of the volcanic rocks, characterized by a high LILE/HFSE ratio and enrichments in LREE, indicate that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkaline volcanic rocks associated with the subduction environment. The ratios of Ba/Ta and Ba/La indicate that they are associated with volcanic arc-related magmatism. The Cretaceous volcanic rocks in Hampyeong area might be located in the Eurasian continental margin, related to the Pacific type tectonic environment during the Cretaceous times.

  • Andesitic pyroclastics and lava flows are deposited as a part of composite volcanoes by Cretaceous volcanic activity in Geojae Island, off the coast of Korea. The andesitic pyroclastics are composed of tuff breccia and lapilli tuff minor intercalated tuff. Lava flows are divided into dense and porphyritic andesite containing phenocrysts of plagioclase, pyroxene, and/or hornblende. The andesitic rocks represent charactersitcs of carc-alkaline BAR association with basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite, and dacite to rhyolite. Major element variations of the volcanic rocks show that $Al_2O_3$, total FeO, CaO, MgO and $TiO_2$ decrease with increasing $SiO_2$ but $K_2O$ and total alkalis increase, and represent differntiation trend of calc-alkaline rock series. In spider diagram, contents of Sr, K, Rb, Ba, and Th are relatively high, but contents of Nb, P, Ti and Cr are low. These petrochemcial characteristics are similar to those of rocks from island arc or continental margein related to plate subduction. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of volcanic rocks are paralle to subparallel, with LREE enriched than HREE, and show gradual increase of negative Eu anomaly from basalt to dacite and rhyolite, suggesting comagmatic fractional crystallization with minor effects of assimilation and magma mixing. Andesitic rocks are assumed medium-K orogenic andesites that formed in the tectomagmatic environment of subduction zone under normal continental margin arc.

  • This article carried studies of the petrographical and petrochemical characteristics on the Cretaceous volcanic rocks in the area of Janggun peak and Gyemyeong peak which is located at the northeastern area of Mt. Geumjeong, Busan. The areas are composed of andesitic rock, sedimentary rock, rhyolitic rock, and intrusive hornblende, biotite granites, in ascending order. According to petrochemistry, the major elements show the calc-alkaline rock series ranged medium-K to high-K. With increasing $SiO_2$, $Al_{2}O_{3}$, $Fe_{2}O_{3}$, $TiO_2$ CaO, MgO MnO and $P_{2}O_{5}$ are decreased and $K_{2}O$ and $Na_{2}O$ are increased in the volcanic rocks. The trace element compositions show high LILE/HFSE ratios and negative anomaly of Nb, and REE patterns show enrichments in LREE and (-) anomaly values increase of Eu from the basaltic andesite to andesite facies, therefore the volcanic rocks have typical characteristics of continental margin arc calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, produced in the subduction environment. The volcanic rock show nearly the same patterns in spider and REE diagram. Fractional crystallization of the basaltic magma would have produced the calc-alkaline andesitic magma. And the rhyolitic magma seems to have been evolved from the basaltic andesitic magma with fractional crystallization of plagioclase, pyroxene, hornblende, biotite.

  • Daejeon-sa basalt in the Mt. Juwang area composed of 12 basalt flows alternate with 9 peperites and each basalt and peperite has the variety of thickness. Peperites yielded in Daejeon-sa basalt are mixed of basalt with reddish shale, of which textural type is globular peperite. Basalts yielded in Daejeon-sa basalt are massive basalt without vesicule, although sometimes vesicules are founded in upper within a flow unit. The basalt has mainly pseudomorph of olivine as phenocryst, and also plagioclase and clinopyroxene phenocryst. Matrix is mainly subophitic texture. The plotting result on the TAS diagram shows these basalts belong to the sub-alkaline, and it can be subdivided into calc-alkaline series on the basis of the diagram of Si02 vs. K20 and of alkali index vs. A1203 diagram. According to plots of wt.% oxides vs. wt.% MgO, abundances of A1203 and CaO increase with decreasing MgO while F ~ dOecre~ase . With decreasing MgO compatible elements decrease while incompatible elements increase. In spider diagram of MORB-normalized trace element patterns, HFS elements are nearly similiar with MORB, but LIL elements are enriched. Especially, contents of Ce, F: and Sm are enriched but Nb is depleted. In the chondrite-normalized REE patterns light REEs are enriched than heavy REEs. Tectomagmatic discrimination diagrams shows basalts in the study area are formed in the tectonomagmatic environment of subduction zone under continental margin. This result accord with characters of chemical composition mentioned above. Cr vs. Y diagram and CeM, vs. Ce diagram show that the primary magma of the basalts may formed by the about 15% partial melting of garnet-peridotite in the mantle wedge. After then, Daejeon-sa basalts may formed from evolved magma undergone mainly olivine fractional crystallization and contarnination of crustal materials before eruption.

  • The Mt. Dungjuribong Volcanic Complex located in Gurye-gun, southwest of Ryeongnam massif, composed of Cretaceous andesitic rocks and rhyolite. $SiO_2$ contents of the volcanic rocks range from 52.0 to 78.5 wt.%. The major and trace elements composition, REE patterns and tectonomagmatic discrimination diagrams of volcanic rocks suggest that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkaline rocks produced in the subduction environment. The phenocrysts of the volcanic rocks show that they had gone in disequilibrium state, such as reversal zoning and resorbed core of plagioclase, reaction rim around pyroxene and resorbed margins of quartz, which showing the evidence of magma mixing during the evolution of magma.

  • The Gadaeri granite near Ulsan mine is an oval-shape isolated granitic body, and is genetically related to the iron-tungsten mineralization. The Gadaeri granite exhibits calc-alkaline and I-type characteristics, and generally shows the micrographic texture which indicates the shallow depth of emplacement. Consideration of the stratigraphic thickness of Ulsan formation and minimum-melt compositions suggests that the bulk magma crystallized at pressure of 0.5~2.0 kbar under water saturated condition. The evolutionary trend observed in the studied rocks represents that feldspar fractional crystallization has been a major magmatic process at the Gadaeri granite pluton. Different chemical characteristics between the Gadaeri and the Masan-Kimhae granites cannot be explained by fractional crystallization or different degrees of partial melting, and it reflects that the magma source for Gadaeri granite was different from that of the Masan and Kimhae granites.

  • Igneous rocks occurring in the northwesern part of Keumsan area, Chungcheongnam-do were studied petrogeochemically. The geology of this area is composed mainly of the Precambrian biotite gneiss, age-unknown Ogchon supergroup, Jurassic biotite granite, and Cretaceous volcanic rocks, pink feldspar granite and quartz porphyry. The biotite granite is gradually changes to leucocratic nature by going from center to periphery of the rock mass. It shows variation, with distance from the center, in chemical components: $SiO_2,\;Na_2O\;and\;K_2O$ increase, whereas $Fe_2O_3,\;CaO,\;P_2O_5,\;MgO,\;and\;TiO_2$ decrease. Based on geochemical data, the biotite granite and quartz porphyry belong to subalkaline series and I-type. They show calc-alkaline differentiation trend. The biotite granite shows little negative Eu-anomaly pattern, whereas quartz porphyry show marked negative Eu-anomaly pattern, indicating that quartz porphyry was evolved further, when compared with biotite granite.

  • The volcanic sequence of the late Cretaceous Moonyu volcanic mass which distributed in the southwestern part of Ryeongnam massif, can be divided into felsic pyroclastic rocks, andesite and andesitic pyroclastic rocks, rhyolite in ascending order. The earliest volcanic activity might commence with intermittent eruptions of felsic magma during deposition of volcaniclastic sediments. Explosive eruptions of felsic pyroclastic rocks began with ash-falls, to progressed through pumice-falls and transmitted with dacitic to rhyolitic ash-flows. Subsequent andesite and andesitic pyroclastic rocks were erupted and finally rhyolite was intruded as lava domes along the fractures near the center of volcanic mass. Petrochemical data show that these rocks are calc-alkaline series and have close petrotectonic affinities with subduction-related continental margin arc volcanic province. Major element compositions range from medium-K to high-K. Petrochemical variation within the volcanic sequence can be largely accounted for tractional crystallization processes with subordinate mixing. The most mafic rocks are basaltic andesite, but low MgO and Ni contents indicate they are fractionated by fractional crystallization from earlier primary mafic magma, which derived from less than 20% partial melting of ultramafic rocks in upper mantle wedge. Based on the stratigraphy, the early volcanic rocks are zoned from lower felsic to upper andesitic in composition. The compositional zonation of magma chamber from upper felsic to lower andesitic, is interpreted to have resulted from fractionation within the chamber and replenishment by an influx of new mafic magma from depth. Replenishment and mixing is based on observations of disequilibrium phenocrysts in volcanic rocks. REE patterns show slight enrichment of LREE with differentiation from andesite to rhyolite. Rhyolite in the final stage can be derived from calc-alkaline andesite magma by fractional crystallization, but it might have underwent crustal contamination during the fractional crystallization.
