  • Silica-filled rubber compounds show poor filler dispersion and slow cure characteristics compared to carbon black-filled ones. In general, a silica-filled rubber compound contains silane coupling agent (bis-(3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl)-tetrasulfide, TESPT) and diphenylguanidine (DPG) to improve the filler dispersion and to make fast cure characteristics. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) improves the filler dispersion in silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds. In this study, effect of NBR on the properties of silica-filled SBR compounds was investigated. Properties of the compounds which contain NBR without DPG or with small amount of TESPT (Compound A) were compared with those of the compounds which contain TESPT and DPG without NBR (Compound B). Scorch time of Compound A is faster than those of Compound B. Modulus and tensile strength of Comound A are slightly lower than those of Compound B. Traction property of the Comound A is better than that of the Compound B. Addition of NBR leads to reduction of the used amount of TESPT and DPG.

  • In this study, the basic properties of cement paste with varying replacement ratio of micro-silica and fumed silica were analyzed to determine the suitability of nanomaterials for use as concrete admixtures. Referring to the ultra-high strength mix, the fluidity of cement paste was evaluated according to the nanomaterial replacement rate and the compressive strength characteristics were compared and analyzed. The related properties of the reactive nanomaterials to the cement hydrate were analyzed using SEM and EDS to observe the microstructure and identify the components of the hydration product. The reactive nanomaterials used in this study had tap densities between 0.061 and 0.264 g/cm3, which were lower than SF. Micro silica exhibited excellent compressive strength properties with increasing replacement ratio, but fumed silica, unlike micro white, obtained excellent compressive strength at replacement ratio of 0.01~0.1 %. The same trend was observed in the hydration characterization.

  • The objectives of this study were to develop nano-pore silica particles and to modify its surface for use as an enzyme immobilization matrix. Sol-gel reaction was used to produce silica particles of various nano pore sizes with hydroxyl groups on their surfaces. The surface was modified with aldehyde that was confirmed by fluorescence imaging. Trypsin was covalently immobilized by reductive amination. Surface density of the immobilized trypsin was ca. $350{\mu}g/m^2$, which was approximately 17- and 35-fold higher than those from the surfaces with hydroxyl and amine group, respectively. About 90% of the initial enzyme activity was maintained after the 12th use of repeated use. When compared with the commercial matrices, the nano-pore silica particle was superior in terms of immobilization yield and specific activity. This study suggests the nano porous silica particles can be used as enzyme immobilization matrix for industrial applications.

  • X-ray powder diffraction is one of the most powerful techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of crystalline compounds. Thus, there exist a number of different methods for quantifying mineral mixtures using X-ray diffraction pattern. We present here the use of Rietveld and PONKCS (partial or no known crystal structure) methods for quantification of amorphous and crystallized mineral phases in synthetic mixtures of standard minerals (amorphous silica, quartz, mullite and corundum). Pawley phase model of amorphous silica was successfully built from the pattern of 100 wt% amorphous silica and internal standard-spiked samples by PONKCS approach. The average of absolute bias for quantities of amorphous silica was 1.85 wt%. The larger bias observed for lower quantities of amorphous silica is probably explained by low intensities of diffraction pattern. Averages of absolute bias for minerals were 0.53 wt% for quartz, 0.87 wt% for mullite and 0.57 wt% for corundum, respectively. The PONKCS approach achieved improved quantitative results compared with classical Rietveld method by using an internal standard.

  • $MO-SiO_2$ (M = Zn, Sn, In, Ag, Ni) binary silica gels were synthesized by sol-gel method and their structural change with the kind of metal ions was characterized by XRD, FT- IR and $^{29}$Si-NMR. Although X-ray analysis showed partial recrystallization of $AgNO_3$ in $Ag-SiO_2$gel, crystalline phase formed by the bonding between metal ion and the silica matrix didn't appear in all $MO-SiO_2$ gels. The FT-IR analysis showed that Zn, Sn and in partially formed Si-O-M bonding in silica matrix and made an shift of absorption peak to by Si-O-Si symmetrical vibration. In addition, $^{29}Si-NMR$ studies showed that Zn, Sn and In didn't affect sol-gel process of silica and were linked with non-bridging oxygen of the linear silica structure, which formed imperfect network because of low temperature sol-gel process. Ag and Ni make a role of catalysis on sol-gel process, resulting in densifying the silica network structure.

  • The effect of silica(fumed) on nitrate reduction by zero-valent iron(ZVI) was studied using batch experiment. The reduction of nitrate was tested in three different aqueous media including de-ionized water, artificial groundwater and real groundwater contaminated by nitrate. Kinetics of nitrate reduction in groundwater were faster than those in de-ionized water, and first-order rate constant($k_{obs}$) of ZVI/silica(fumed) process was about 2.5 time greater than that of ZVI process in groundwater. Amendment of Silica(fumed) also decreased ammonium presumably through adsorption on silica surface. The pHs in all processes increased due to oxidation of ZVI, but the increase was lower in groundwater due to buffering capacity of groundwater. The result also showed amount of reduced nitrate increased as initial nitrate concentration increased in groundwater. Separate adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that fumed silica itself had some degree of adsorption capacity for ammonium. The overall results indicated that silica(fumed) might be a promising material for enhancing nitrate reduction by ZVI.

  • Silica in primary system combines with an alkali grammatical particle metal and forms the zeolite layer which is hindering the heat transfer on the surface of the cladding. Zeolite layer becomes the cause of the damage in this way. The problems of the NPP's primary system have been issued steadily by EPRI. Through a series of experiments of the laboratory scale, we confirmed the applicability of NF membrane for silica removal, as silica rejection rate of NF membrane is about $60\;{\sim}\;70\%$ and boron rejection rate is about $10\;{\sim}\;20\%$. We accomplished a site experiment about four NF membranes manufactured by FilmTec and Osmonics Inc. In experiment using 400L of SFP water, when operation pressure is $10kg_{f}/cm^2$, we confirmed that the silica rejection rate of NF90-2540 manufactured by FilmTec Inc. is about $98\%$, boron rejection rate is about $43\%$. The silica rejection rate of NF270-2540 is about $38\%$, boron rejection rate is about $3.5\%$. Afterward, through additional experiments, such as long term characteristic experiments, we are going to design a optimum NF membrane system for silica removal.

  • Poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers and PCL/silica membranes were synthesized by sol-gel derived electrospinning and casting, respectively. Smooth PCL nanofibers were obtained from the precursor containing N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). PCL/silica membranes were prepared by varying the tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) contents from 0 to 40 vol% to investigate the effect of silica addition on mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of the membranes. Although the strength of the membranes decreased from 12 to 8 MPa with increasing the silica content, the strength remained almost constant 7 weeks after dipping in phosphate buffered saline solution (PBS). The strength reduction was attributed to the presence of a patterned surface pores and micro-pores present in the walls between pores. The crystal structure of the membranes was orthorhombic and the crystallite size decreased from 57 to 18 nm with increasing the silica content. From the agar overlay test, the PCL/silica membranes exhibited neither deformation and discoloration nor lysis of L-929 fibroblast cells.

  • The distresses of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) was recently reported at highway cement concrete pavement in Korea, which showed typical cracking and spalling patterns of ARS. Korea is was no longer safe zone against ASR, needding to find a control methodology against ASR. The purpose of this research was to provide a control methodology against ASR using mineral admixtures through a series of laboratory test program. Laboratory works included the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) by ASTM C 1260 regulation with five types of aggregate and three types of mineral admixtures (fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and silica fume). The result of ASTM C 1260 test for five types of aggregates without mineral admixtures showed that Siltstone and Mudstone were found to be "reactive." Tuff and Andesite-1 were found to be "possiblely reactive." In case of concrete mixed with 10, 20, and 30% fly ash, all specimens except Mudstone mixed with 10% FA were found to be "non-reactive". In cases of concrete mixed with 30, 40, and 50% ground granulated blast-furnace slag and 5, 7.5, and 10% silica fume, all specimens were found to be "non-reactive." These results could be selectively applied in constructions in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate herbicide resistant plant through tissue culture. Callus was induced from embryos of Echinochloa crusgalli Beauv. (var, oryzicola Ohwi, var. caudata Kitagawa and var, crusgalli). An optium medium for callus induction and succinate dehydrogenase activity in inducted callus were detected and callus growth of various varieties of Echinochloa crusgalli was assessed under the treatment of various rates of butachlor[N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)acetamide]. MS medium seemed to be the most appropriate to induce callus from the embryos of varieties of E. crusgalli by using 2,4-D about 5.5mg/l as a hormone source. The activity of succinate dehydrogenase in inducted callus showed positive reaction against to TTC(2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride) regardless of concentrations of butachlor and varieties of E. crusgalli, indicating that all the callus induced were alive. The callus growths derived from seeds of E, cnesgalli were greatly affected by various rates of butachlor and were completely inhibited at the highest concentration of butachlor, $10^{-3}M$, regardless of varieties of E. crasgalli. $10^{-6}M$ of butachlor inhibited 24.6% of the callus growth of E. crusgalli Beauv, var. oryzicola Ohwi, while E. crusgalli Beauv. var. crusgalli showed 42% of inhibition, showing that there was difference in response of varieties of E. crusgalli Beauv. to butachlor.
