Recently, foundation designs based on piled raft concept have been increasing, where the piles are required not to ensure the overall stability of the foundation but to act as settlement reducer. When a concrete track is constructed on soft ground, excessive settlements may occur, while it rarely has bearing capacity problems. In this case, the settlement of the concrete track may be effectively reduced by arranging a small number of small-diameter piles beneath the track. This paper presents the effect of pile installation on the reduction of concrete track's settlement. A 3D finite difference method was employed to model the piled concrete tracks. A parametric study was carried out to assess the effect of varying soil condition and pile arrangements. From the analysis results, it is verified that the effect of the pile installation is significant to effectively reduce the settlement of concrete track. Optimal number of pile rows and pile spacings was proposed for the economical design of a piled concrete track. The bearing mechanism of piles was also investigated by analyzing load sharing characteristics of pile according to soil conditions and pile arrangements.

An application of concrete track is being actively processed for the construction of Korean high speed railway. The concrete track has an advantage in decreasing the maintenance cost, whereas it has much difficulty controlling the long term settlement after settlement occurred. Therefore, the management and control of settlement are very important for the successful construction of concrete track. The purpose of this paper is to verify the allowable settlement between concrete track and ballast track, and piled raft foundation installation effects as settlement reducers for concrete track. Therefore, a series of 3D finite element analyses that take into account the allowable settlement were performed for major parameters such as soil condition, pile installation and loading type. Based on the analysis, it is shown that concrete track causes much smaller settlement than ballast track, and the effect of installation is necessary to effectively reduce the settlement of concrete track.
An active application of concrete track is being expected far the future constructions of Korean railroad. In comparison with the existing ballasted tract, a concrete track is very susceptible for the settlement, since its rehabilitation requires much time and cost. When a concrete track is constructed on fine-grained subgrade soil, excessive cumulative plastic settlements due to repetitive train road may occur. In this case, the settlement of the concrete track may be effectively reduced by installing a small number of small-diameter piles beneath the track. This paper presents the effect of pile installation on the reduction of cumulative plastic settlement of concrete track. A method combining experiential equation and numerical method is proposed. Using an existing experiential equation and the estimated earth pressure distribution, the cumulative plastic strain was calculated. From the results, it is verified that the effects of the pile installation is significant to effectively reduce the cumulative plastic settlement of concrete track. The reduction effects of the cumulative plastic settlement according to the pile number and pile arrangement are presented.

Stone column or granular compaction pile have been used in widely during the several decades as a technique to reinforce soft cohesive soils and increase bearing capacity, accelerate consolidation settlement of the foundation soil. The bearing capacity of the granular compaction pile is governed mainly by the lateral confining pressure mobilized in the native soft soil to restrain bulging collapse of the granular pile. Therefore, the technique becomes unfeasible in soft, compressible clayey soils that do not provide sufficient lateral confinement. This paper presents the main results of numerical study of granular compaction pile which is partly mixed with lean concrete. 3D finite element analyses are performed with composite reinforced foundations by both granular compaction pile and partly mixed granular compaction pile with lean-mixed concrete.
Granular piled raft systems have been effectively used in soft ground foundation not only to reduce settlements but also to improve bearing capacity. In the present study, the finite element method of analysis on a basis of the plate theory is proposed to predict non-uniform settlements at the interface between the raft and foundation soils. To verify the validity of the proposed method of analysis and the predicted settlements of granular piled raft systems, comparisons are made with the results presented in the previous research(Kim et al., 1999). Finally, behavior characteristics with various patterns of the granular piled raft systems and effects of the settlement reduction are analyzed in connection with the design parameters.
The influence of tunnelling on buildings has become an important issue in urban areas. The problem is an interactive one: not only do tunnelling settlements affect existing structures, but existing structures affect tunnel-induced soil movements. In order to examine the constraint of surface settlement and the degradation of building damage parameters, 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses are peformed. Also, in this paper, the results of the parametric studies for the variations of the damage parameters due to the ground movements are presented by utilizing 2-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element models, totally 162 models. The width of a structure, its bending and axial stiffness, its position relative to the tunnel and the depth of tunnel are considered. The interaction is shown by reference to commonly-used building damage parameters, namely angular distortion, deflection ratio, maximum building settlements, maximum differential settlements and horizontal strain. By introducing relative stiffness parameters which combine the bending and axial stiffness of the structure with its width and stiffness of soil, design curves are established. These give a guide as to the likely modification of the greenfield settlement trough caused by a surface structure. They can be used to give initial estimates of likely building damage.
The transitional zone between tunnel and earthwork is one of the most vulnerable areas site for railway lines and because of differential settlement due to different stiffness of each supporting layer, it has to conducted a maintenance work constantly. In this study, it is conducted to compare the effect of reinforcement by wheel load and displacement of the sleepers after existing sleepers are replaced with the large sleepers for 20m long in-field transitional zone. Also, numerical parametric study using multi-layer elastic method has been performed to compare rail force, settlement and stresses of ballast while varying size and space of the sleeper. The field test and numerical results show that replacing the large sleepers improves about 10% of total settlement and coefficient of wheel force than conventional sleepers. Effectiveness of improvement is about 9.3%, 4%, 14.5% for rail seat force, settlement of sleepers and ballast pressure respectively with size of sleepers.
Pile or column supported embankments have been increasingly employed to construct highway or railway embankments over soft soils. Piles or columns of stiffer material installed in the soft ground can provide the necessary support by transferring the embankment load to a firm stratum using a soil arching. However, there has been reported to occur a relatively large differential settlement between the piles and the untreated soils. Geosynthetic reinforced pile or column supported embankment (GRPS) is often used to minimize the differential settlement. Two dimensional finite element anlyses have been performed on both the column supported embankments and the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments by using a PLAXIS 2D to evaluate the soil arching effect. Based on the results obtained from finite element analyses, the stress reduction ratio decreases as the area replacement ratio increases in the column supported embankments. For the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments, the geogrid reinforcemnt can reduce differential settlements effectively. In additon, the use of stiffer geogrid is appeared to be more effective in reducing the differential settlements.
When the structure such as roadway, railway are constructed on abandoned coal mine area, the countermeasure to prevent settlements is necessary. In this study, numerical analyses are performed to evaluate the effect of the various countermeasures. As a results, the method which is filling the coal mine is more effective than that of reinforcing the ground above the coal mine. The ground settlement decreases hyperbolically with increasing the filling ratio of the coal mine. Also, the relationship between the filling ratio and the settlement reduction ratio is discussed precisely.

The settlement hardly occurs in structures supported by pile foundation such as abutment, culvert but a cavity is formed in the lower part of a structure. As a result, soil discharged from the lateral ground to the cavity accelerates the settlement of the lateral ground of the structure, resulting in a larger settlement. Therefore, in order to prevent problems caused by cavity under the structure supported by pile foundation, soil Flow Protector (briefly called 'FLP'), which can be easily installed on the side of structure, was developed. In this study, an laboratory model test was carried out to prove the reduction effect of settlement and to estimate the optimal installation length of the FLP. As a result, the installation of the FLP reduced the settlement of the lateral ground and prevented the leakage of lateral ground soil into the cavity. If the stiffness of the FLP is small, the state or active earth pressure is generated in the upper part, which is not favorable for stability. But if the stiffness of the FLP is high enough, the passive earth pressure area is generated in the upper part, which will be advantageous for the stability. Also, the increased installation length of FLP is effective to reduce the settlement. And the ratio of the optimal length of the FLP to the box structure height (H = 250 mm) are flexible FLP 1.38, stiff FLP 0.73.
